Fencing is disappointing. But you sound like me when I was butthurt about it back in middle school.

It takes a totally different set of skills, high twitch muscles, and psychological agility to be good at, from a sporting perspective I can accept it as something challenging but not entertaining to watch.

It just sucks that fencing is marketed as sword fighting when you're a kid, then you see it in the Olympics and are disappointed because its just two faceless faggots in leotards quickly whipping around thin twigs.

Changing the weapons from foils to actual rapiers/small sword hominids (even with electronic scoring tips) and the modern Olympic quickddraw bullshit would literally be impossible because the swords would have inertia, unlike a glorified car antanna.

Fencing is great exercise (something that /k/ will truly never understand lel). Besides that, your post is true for Sabre. Sabre is the cancer of the sport that draws in 12 year olds, faggots, and normies to the sport because you're able to slash and can only hit center mass and arms (no leg or feet hits). Epee is where the sport really shines and where skill comes into play. With epee, every body part is fair game. That means if you want to be good, you have to master wrist and foot hits which is hard as shit when your opponent knows what they're doing. And no fucking swinging like a retard like Sabre. I love the sport but I realize that only one of the weapons (epee) is true fencing. Foil is also to fencing as boxing is to MMA. Just boring as shit.

I'm legit curious how physically demanding it is in comparison to fencing. I'm not bashing it, I can see how it works up a sweat after a 2 minute bout. But scoring seems to go by so fast that it seems more mentally exhausting than physically.

I have no use whatsoever for the sport, but I've got to agree that Olympic fencing is great exercise. Just on pure athleticism, an Olympic fencer will be in better shape than 90% of HEMA and classical fencers. They also take it more seriously, meaning that they train harder, meaning that they hit harder and faster. You can easily beat them if you close fast enough to grapple or stab with your off hand, or force them to think in the round, but you're going to work for it.

It's very intense, you are moving at the highest speeds possible, lots of fast-twitch muscle action

It's also very hard on the knees, as lounges often means you overextend at full speed, all the "old" guys (which come few) had knee-injuries from fencing

No, I haven't done MMA. I would think a full contact sport is more physically DEMANDING than fencing. I say it like that because with something like MMA requires you to be at least fit to be decent and works up a heavy sweat. Fencing gets hard because you're in full gear from head to toe, but there's quite a few fat and scrawny fucks at my fencing club and even at the tournaments I've been to. But they always get outplayed by somebody more mobile, which is why epee is so superior. I would always drop into a full close stance squat to score a foot shot because it's legal in epee. Epee bouts also last much longer because it's a lot more methodical. You can get away with being a fatfuck because bouts last at most 3 minutes because each round always starts with both retards just charging at each other full speed and swinging randomly hoping they get a hit.

It's quite physically demanding. as >>35179955 pointed out, lots of fast twitch muscle movements, super intense cardio, and hyper extension of pretty much every joint in your body while fencing. Your knees, elbows, hips, shoulders, and writsts are essentially fucked after years of doing it, finding an older fencer is a rarity, and they are either WAY past their prime, or not to be fucked with. It's human speed chess, as long as you're not playing with sabre or foil, in which case it's essentially who can hit first, reset, repeat.. I currently fence (HEMA/SCA) Rapier, Sabre, Longsword, Spear, and occassionally Epee, but most don't use Epee, since it's so open target (not to mention french).

If you want to work cardio, look up your local HEMA or SCA group, take up Fencing, (or if SCA, heavy.. get dressed in armor, beat people with Rattan Bats, have a drink afterwards).

All of you guys who say its boring or not gun to watch, what dont you like about it? Admitedlly i only really get into sports the year prior ad during the olympics but i get so hyped for every game i see when theyre airing. I can find something exciting with literally every sport in the games, me and my buddy were shouting at womens weightlifting during the rio olympics.

Different sport, different tradition, different audience; it's just the natural way things progress when a sport is removed from its martial origins and taken up more and more by normalfags.

Sabre fencer here, yes the sport is not as bad ass as it is marketed to be, but it is quite fun and does take a level of skill to become proficient at. Don't shit on other's hobbies OP. no (you) for you.

I've seen bouts finish without a single touch scored. It can be interesting if the fencers are more active, but it tends to be the slowest and thus least interesting

Foil is probably the most interesting just because it's fast enough to keep people's attention while still being flashy and long-lasting enough to follow.

The real problem is that it's hard to really get into it without understanding the rules, and it's especially hard to learn the rules when you're watching experts go at it.

And it's probably for the best. When I fenced at college, I found the fencing club to be a comfortable middle ground between the neckbeards that populated the more "realistic" martial arts clubs like HEMA and whatnot and the more toxic competitive culture you'd get from a "real" sport.

I think a big part of it for me is really just the olympics. Like i said every sport there i get hyped for. I think what really cemented olympic fencing was a few games ago where the korean guy kept doing rolls to get away from the other guy. It was awesome to watch even if it was against the rules.

Nope. Sabre and Foil have this thing called right-of-way - pretty much tells who's controlling the action, so if both fencers hit within a certain time, the guy with right of way gets the point. Epee doesn't have that, so if both fencers hit eachother within the cutoff time, both get a point.

Once you understand right of way it gets a lot easier to really understand what's going on. You get right of way from
>starting an attack
>parrying an attack
>having the other guy miss
and you can lose it from things like
>missing
>getting parried
>having your foot land before the blade (in sabre)
>not immediately attacking after parrying/opponent missing
>pulling arm back while extending for attack

There's also some weird rules like no crossing your feet going forward in sabre. You can literally run backwards, but it's a yellowcard if you do it forwards.
