The AShM missiles that the Varyag sports is the P-1000 Vulkan, capable of mid-flight course corrections so the missile can turn completely around in flight.

And you underestimate the shear size of these missiles, at almost 12 meters in length, the Slava class cruisers just don't have the Draught for it (8.4 meters).
The only ships that can possess these missiles in anything remotely VLS like is the Kirov Class battleships and even then, they are still angled inside the hull.

As a comparison, the tomahawk cruise missile is 5 and a half meters in length.
