1911 shooters, how reliable is your 1911? Do you carry your 1911? Would you trust your life to it?

1911 newb here, wanna get a Colt Railgun and possibly carry it in winter. Not sure about all the myths/realities about 1911s and reliability and all that shit.
>>
Had my Springfield for about two years now. No problems so far. Maybe put a little over a thousand rounds through it.
>>
>>27775526
I carry my Springfield all the time. No hesitation.

Is it possible to CC a 1911? I'm about 5'10" and 160 if that helps

None beyond the usual problems of bending over too far with a pistol on your hip and wearing short shirts.

As a single stack it's a very thin pistol so you just have to worry about the length of the grip which is about the same for most any pistol.
>>
>>27775526
My 1994 Enhanced, 2008 Government, and 2015 Gold Cup Colts have all been reliable since day 1.
My 2005 Springfield Mil-Spec broke its extractor after about 5,000 rounds and my 2008 Springfield Operator broke its extractor after 3,500
My 2011 Tisas Regent R100 was very picky about magazines but was always flawless with mags it liked
My 2008 Kimber ran reliably after about 350 rounds but the slide stop pin, hammer spur, front sight, mainspring housing, and top left grip screw bushing all broke and had to be replaced at one point or another
My 2015 Ruger had a poorly tuned extractor out of the box which I fixed and the ejection port was slightly too small to reliably eject unfired rounds
My 2007 Les Baer worked fine after about 300 rounds and is picky with magazines

I currently only own the Colts, the Baer, and the Ruger and I only still own the Ruger because I didn't want to put a .460 Rowland conversion in my Colt Government.
>>
I have a ruger fullsize 1911, I have about 3500 rounds through it. I would never trust my life to this gun. When it was new it never failed but after around 2500 rounds I consistently got failures to feed. It needs to be spotlessly clean to feed even kind of reliably. I even got a new spring and made sure my mags were as clean as I could get them. If I shoot 300 rounds on a trip I get usually less than a mags worth of fails, and that's when it and the wilson mags I have are both brand new levels of clean.

>>
Roomate has been carrying a Taurus 1911 since 2010 and hasn't had any issues, probably 300-800 round a month at the range on it.

I just got a Ruger 1911 Tuesday, and I've put about 800 through it. It didn't fail once when I was shooting about 300 Speed Lawman rounds, but it failed at least once every other magazine when I was shooting shit cheap Winchester white box turds.

Super easy to clean though compared to other guns I've had.
>>
>>27775526
I carry a colt ww1 repro that i semi modernized.

Had it fir almost 2 years now, about 6k rounds through and everything is still hitting where i aim.

The only reason i carry this particular 1911, is because its as buttery smooth as my sig, and it fits my hand correctly when shooting one handed.

All i did was replace the small parts with wilson bulletproof shit after 5k rounds, and added a shorter trigger. My sights were actually put on and pinned nicely compared to my sa gi and friends ria so i wont change them out. Grip safety is short and almost non existant, i did switch out the long wide spur hammer fir a short one since i HATE all ww2 and modern hammers that are too thin and sharp to thumb it down(i thumb down then rack slide). I also switched the smooth Flat msh for a flat checkered one because it slid to much in my hands after my hands get sweaty from 100+ rounds

>>
>>27775817
Not really. They'll run anything if you have the right mag type/ammo combination, but if you can't be bothered to worry about the details of that oft-overlooked aspect of 1911 reliability, then any mags with medium-length, semi-tapered feed lips and dimpled, skirted followers will run pretty much anything except the most exotic loads.

Metalforms (Colt-branded or otherwise) have always worked well for me in that regard.
>>
>>27775785
what mags did you end up running through your tisas? i have the zig m1911 and have trouble finding ones that fit and slide in and out of the magwell easily.
>>
A decent, high quality gi style 1911 with well made magazines will work reliably for a very long time so long as its maintained
>>
>>27775526
I have a Ruger. The front sight constantly drifts to the right. Other than that it's fine. Would I trust my life to it? No, because of the sight issue. As far as reliability I would, but I have a glawk 19 for that and I'm more accurate with that anyway.

I have a question, I'm turning 21 next month and I was going to buy myself a handgun. I'm looking into buying a rock island armory 1911 45 acp, is it any good for an entry level handgun or even a good pistol for that matter?
>>
>>27775526
I own a bone stock current Colt 1911 (O1991 blued) since 2014.

>how reliable is your 1911?
Haven't any issues with it so far, but I've only put a few hundred rounds through it. I shoot my M&P45 and SIG P220 a lot more.

Do you carry your 1911?
No, I bought it just so I have a 1911 to shoot whenever I want and bought a Colt because 'Merica.

>Would you trust your life to it?
I haven't shot it enough to trust my life with it. I've only ever put FMJ through it. My P220 and M&P45 all day though.
>>
>>27777166
Yes they are good entry guns. Also look at taylors 1911, they are sourced from same RIA 1911s and same rollmark placements. I had my friend buy it as his first handgun over a RIA since the taylors was 30$ cheaper. Shoots fist size groups at 7 yards in low light indoor range.
>>
>>27775726
Jesus christ dude.... someone get this boy here a sandwich...
>>
>>27778895
This, I only ever chamber a hollowpoint. The magazines are always full of fmj. I am to paranoid to trust a 1911 with hollowpoints.
>>

>>
>>27775526
Go for it, a Colt railgun is a pretty solid gun.
>>
>>27775526
>1911 shooters, how reliable is your 1911?
With 230gr hardball and tapered gi-lip mags, it would only feed 2-3 rounds at a time without failure to feed. After 40 rounds it had a malfunction that required benchwork to fix, and i haven't shot it since. I don't blame the 1911 design

(This is like fish in a barrel though - i'll let you guess the manufacturer, rhymes with "gay men spree")
>>
I carry a hi power and it's reliable as fuck.

They're so similar I'd figure a 1911 to be just as reliable. Especially a colt. They can be held to a higher standard imo.

>>
>>27775526
>1911 shooters, how reliable is your 1911?
Goes bang every time. No malfunctions in the last ~300 rounds, since I got it back from the manufacturer for frame repairs. Shoots everything I feed it.
>Do you carry your 1911?
I have.
>Would you trust your life to it?
If I point it at something, and hit the bang switch, with a +P 200 grain solid copper lehigh penetrator in it, it will go bang, and the target will get screwed.

Very, never had a malfunction in like 1.5k rounds even with steel case.

>>
I have an R1 1911. I really have no idea how many rounds ate through it at this point, but I do know that you can put about 500 dirty, cheap bullets through it before it'll get a failure to feed/double feed, and I haven't reached the limit in a single range session where cleaner ammo (and I'm talking winchester, nothing fancy) dirties the gun to the point of feeding failures

Like most funs, you keep it clean, it'll keep you alive
>>

Had my Para-Ordinance GI expert for a little over a year and a half. About 3k rounds through it. Haven't had any malfunctions at all regardless of magazine. Haven't been able to try 10 rounders yet, because most of my money goes towards school. I've been exclusively shooting steel-cased Tulashit for the past 10 months, and the only issue is stove piping when firing with the magazine out, single round in chamber. Like I said, most of my cash goes to school, so I've yet to use it in other than a range setting. I'd like to try it in a tacticool class or something and see if James Yeager really is a faggot for bashing 1911s.
>>
I have a pre-series 70 Colt Gov't Model. Recently, the hammer's been dropping to half-cock when I try to fire it and I've been too lazy to get it looked at.
Purty gun, though, aside from the idiot mark my uncle left when he tried re-assembling it.
>>
>>27775526
I occasionally carry mine and wouldn't if I didn't trust my life to it. I've had mine 2 years and shot about 6,000 rounds out of it. I don't have a problem with CC, but I'm 6'4" and 230 so that's a factor. They're reliable as fuck if you treat them right and practice with them, just like most other firearms.
Anything else OP?
>>
>>27775693
>>27775715

Granted it would cost a decent amount of cash even if he did make his own ammunition but if he has the cash this would be beyond easy. My range is on the way home, It doesn't take long if you have a few magazines to burn through a lot of ammunition.
>>
>>27775785
>paying the price of a Les Baer and it is still finicky

Yeah I think i'll steer clear of 1911s.
>>
>>27781774
My razorback runs fine.... a little spots of rust on the hammer though. Makes me think this thing is a safe queen
>>
>>27781975
It'll happen eventually, generally the little claw busts from constant stress. Usually takes a hell of a lot of rounds though. Or the first 500 because something was wrong with it to begin with.

>>27780359
Won't work, I had a few mild starvation events early in my life and now weight just doesn't stay on.
>>
>>27782178
pull your hammer and check the first notch. If it's pre-s70 do you mean its a war production model or pre A1? Either way the hammer sounds worn as fuck

1911 noob here, should I be worried about hollowpoints feeding in a 1911? I'm going to try some out of course, but for instance Federal HSTs have pretty large hollow tips, should they be avoided for 1911 use? Maybe stick to something with a polymer tip like Hornadys?

Maybe this is a decent place to ask instead of starting a new thread...

I'm graduating law school in May. I'm thinking about buying myself a decent 1911 as a Nice Thing, since I've put off pretty much all gun-related stuff except buying ammo and mags.

I'd prefer a production gun if possible. I really don't care to wait for a custom shop.

Features I want:
- Good sights, preferably serrated, with tritium at least in the front
- Frontstrap checkering/other texturing
- Reputable company

Nice to haves:
- No rail
- Magwell
- Good grips w/ aggressive texture

Budget is probably going to be in the $1500-1700 range. What should I buy? I know next to nothing about 1911 manufacturers.

Law school bro, I graduate next May too. Kill me.

I would go either Colt or Dan Wesson in that price range. I am looking at Sigs personally because I want a rail and I don't give a shit about being a "pure" 1911.

Maybe a Special Combat Government would be cool for you. That is 100% what I would buy if I didn't want a rail.

SA configures their 1911 Professional model for a lot of agencies, that happens to be one ordered by the DEA. CRG or Civilian Requisition Gun is the one that you should be buying.

DEA = drug enforcement agency
ATF = Acoholo Tobacco and Firearms
CIA/FBI = obvious
NVS = Navy Seals
DF = Delta Force
SEC = Secret Service

You can find more at 1911 forum. Pretty much the only 1911 used by the US government are Springfield Professional.

Speaking of idiots, you do know that it being a professional model is the entire reason behind the price and not DEA right.

The Professional is practically a full custom

Ruger SR1911 owner here... Threw in a bull barrel (Heavy barrel) and swapped out the Grips for a little thinner elk antler set.

Other than its prettiness for being stainless steel with antler... I love the thing. Was my first handgun, saving for a Colt or a Sig.

You forgot because you are talking out of your ass anon. I own very old 1911's, GI's, and some newer ones as well. The only FTF's I have ever had are with various hollowpoints, so I load magazines with fmj's. That's just what I choose to do. Not sure why you are such an asshole about it, you shit posting, meme spouting, man child, faggot, piece of shit.

What's the best 1911 around $1k?
Sig?
>>
>>27801909
You can get into a DW RZ45 or an STI Ranger for just over $1k which will be the best fitted guns for the price class. If you want more features like rail, ambi controls, etc though Springfield is next in line.

From your experience, is it a good idea to put extra shit on 1911?

My Valor is a range and only sometimes carry gun, so I am less concerned with widgets. While I prefer a tighter fitted 1911, for a nightstand gun I would go for something with a light rail, everything else is personal preference.
>>
>>27801783
Your gun pictures are always gorgeous. How do you like the green? I want one, but OD isn't really my thing. But the MC Operator is the easiest SA rail gun to find in my area.
>>
I bought a used Sig 1911 Tacops a couple years ago. Has not failed me. Just like any other gun, take care of it and keep it clean.

Next up on my list is a 9mm 1911, just trying to find a nice one with rails without breaking the bank is the only problem.
>>
>>27803011
>with rails

I think one that would not break your bank would be from RIA. Don't judge them so fast read some reviews on their 9's and you will be impressed. I have a SA range officer in 9mm, iwth it had rails though..

Depends on the holster, if its a normal Walmart leg holster it will fit. For your Kydex it won't fit. Here's a thread dedicated to the MR07's holster.

Here's a review on the MR07:

https://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=376728

Overall I love mine, I was scared it would scratch the gun but so far no scratches to speak of. The only negative is you need to use their own slide stop which I don't like compared to the original DW stop.

I thought DW was pretty tightly fitted. The non-MIM really appeals to me.
>>
>>27805088
Ah sorry I realize now that my statement read oddly. The DW is certainly well fitted, I was trying to say if a light rail was required for a nightstand gun that you would need to move to a different brand in the $1k price arena since DW won't meet those needs at that price (I like the Springfields at that price for the more tactical features).

I've always liked the STI/SV style slab frames. When picking a gun IMO, it should feel right. Most of you know what i mean... and the STI design feels right IMO.

Pic related is my Colt. I was putting it back together once and I broke the lever that pushes on the plunger in the slide that allows the firing pin to be sent forward. So I just deleted that shit, got rid of the Series 80 stuff and shimmed the space up.

Lately, the flat wire recoil spring I put in it seems to need more power, so I'll probably just switch back to the old one that was meant for the gun. The slide seems very sluggish right now, that will probably fix it right up.

No FTEs/FTF or any other problems other than that shit. I did shit a brick when I went to the range after the lever to the firing pin had broke and I didn't know it, because this thing was my bedside gun for two months while I didn't know it was broken.

Very yes. You can CC one under a damn T-shirt, no shit. Single-stack is pretty easy to conceal.

I have 3 1911's
>RIA GI 1911A1
Shit GI sights, shit GI mags (using CMP surplus mags for dat authenticity), has literally never had a single issue in over 1800 rounds
>Brolin Gold Match
Despite Brolin having a really shit rep for non-heat-treated slides and spotty QC, this is the second most accurate pistol I've ever fired. Will eat 230gr ball and 200gr Hornady LSWC's all day long but -will not- feed a 185gr bullet of any shape. Which sucks, because I shoot a lot of Berry's 185gr plated SWC's. Normally use WC mags with it, but have tried everything from Chip McCormick Shooting Stars and Powermags to Nighthawk and milsurp. Currently have over 10,000 rounds through it.
>custom bullseye AMU-hardfit 1911 on Caspian frame and slide
Once I got the ejector and extractor tuned (which took less than 50rds, and happened before I even had a finish put on the gun), it has been 100% reliable with everything I can feed it. Will even cycle full wadcutters designed for .45LC. Currently using new Nighthawk mags for it, because they were cheaper than my normal WC's. Currently have about 820rds through it.
>>
>>27806582

Last three new Colts on my bench were there because they had problems out of the box. One had a sear missing a quarter of its engagement area right on the corner. Pitiful.
>>
>>27806553
I was surprised by the quality of their $2000 FDE tactical bullshit gun the CQBP. What's even more shady is there is two versions, one for $2400 called the CQBP Custom shop which are very nice but no where near $2400 and their $2000 normal CQBP. There is no difference but the normal CQBP is just a FDE rail gun with poorly fitted slides and laden with MIM parts.

I've got a Remington R1 that I use for training and I carry a WC.

I've got more rounds and abuse on the R1. Between the two of them I've got roughly 7k rounds through them this year. The only failures I've had in either were ammo related.

Hardball only in the R1, between 200-230 great

JHP only in the WC, half and half between handloads and critical duties.

I've got no problems with either, but I feel like I might get into a G19 soon.
