What is this button thing on the left side of the M-1944

Not Op, but I've got similar questions regarding this type of belt. I've got an Austrian version of this (cold war surplus), are the dimensions the same? Also any information on how these were worn would be greatly appreciated.

It was not worn with barracks dress, we had to buy staple belts in unit or Corps colours for that.

There's a small female coupling point on the inside of US GI .45 magazine pouches. That coupling is what the button on the belt is for. It's also for the US officer .45 auto holsters.
