Can we get a 75th Ranger Regiment thread? I've been lurking on /k/ for a while now and when these treads or other infantry threads come up there's always a comparison with Rangers. Some guys say they are basically 0311s/11bs and nothing more, while in another thread they will be compared to SEALs and the only people who do DA better than Rangers is Devgrou/delta. I'm looking for some quality information on them. It would be great if any current or former Rangers, or others oh have worked with them can give some insight.
>>
>>25088893
The role of the Ranger is simple.

You know how in Modern Warfare 2 Sgt. Foley tells Ramirez to do everything. Well, imagine if Sgt. Foley was a general and Ramirez was the entire 75th Ranger Regiment.

Are the Rangers going to be up against ISIS or what?

If I'm going to join the army, I want to do army shit. And I'd rather do army shit in Iraq or Afghanistan than a dingy base in Mississippi. If they're just sitting in bases like everyone else, I won't bother my recruiter about Option 40.

Rangers are the modern eqivalent of the Waffen SS in terms of the role they play on the battlefield.

They are elite, high speed, well trained and disciplined troops well suited for handing precise and difficult missions.

It is were infantrymen with an IQ above 90 go. That doesn't mean it is full of smart guys, just slightly less than retarded which does make a difference.

Just do whatever you gotta do to stay alive.
This isn't some new job you just picked up, this is the fact you have a mission critical to some important operation (if you don't stand up and shoot that guy, he's going to ambush that platoon of marines you just made buddy buddy with).
Hey ricky, do you deal with a lot of inter-service rivalry? Or faggots? Or do they just see the tabs /etc and go 'not for me, man'.
Hope your nights going okay bud, wish I could hookup a beer!

Also I've read that you said line guys can get HALO Slots sometimes. Is that just for fun/bonuses or is there ever going to be some guys that aren't RRC doing HALO/dive ops In Regiment
>>
>>25093188
RICKY, my man what's good in the hood? Last time we talked you said you and a lot of SOf guys get test fro, an Endocrinologist. How did you do this? Was it through word of mouth, or did you have to go to a couple docs to get a cool one that would let you cycle if bloods came back okay. How many guys do what you do as opposed to getting it online or from the swoll bro at the gym?
>>
>>25088893
That's because the Rangers in general are sorta hit or miss. Some of them are high speed, others are so ate up you wouldn't trust them to hold up a wall.
>>
>>25093893

Iraq 08, night mission. We were grabbing a HVT that their Intel had tagged, in our AO. We walked into grab the guy, cause the roads were too narrow for vehicles. About a block from the target, one of their corporals dropped a guy and made him push, mid mission. The breach and clear went fine, but if it had been an ambush (as had happened several times) we would have been screwed. And during our rendezvous prior to the op, they put 3 guys in LOF of a vehicle mounted M2.
Idk, maybe it was just because it was mid surge and they'd lowered their standards, but it was unprofessional as fuck, and my PS got them banned from our company AO after that, since their senior ncos didn't correct the crpl. We exploited any of their intel ourselves after that.

>>

>>
>>25094623
Rangers don't always work with SF, genius. We were escorting them because it was our AO, in the old town of one of the larger cities. Task Force 16 wasn't particularly special anyways, unless you mean special like special education.

My platoon sergeant knew some of the local operational detachment guys, so we got tasked with pulling cordon & support for them a lot. That might be why his opinion carried weight.

Like I said, this was mid surge, when the infantry was taking anyone who could type their name on the ASVAB.
>>
>>25094725
>infantry was taking anyone who could type their name on the ASVAB.

You had my curiosity, now you have my attention.
How exactly do I into SF?
>>
>>25095023
Why not?
>>
>>25095024
I'm assuming you're not in the army. You want to try for SF, ask about 18X. Your GT minimum gt score must be 105, but the higher the better, unlike other SOF, there is no initial physical screening but it is a physically demanding course as well as mentally demanding.
>>
>>25095072
Thank you for the information.
>>
>>25095084
If you're serious, I recommend reading
http://www.amazon.com/Chosen-Soldier-Making-Special-Warrior/dp/0307339394
and
http://www.amazon.com/Get-Selected-Special-Forces-Successfully/dp/0975355279
And one thing I will stress, SF is not looking for meathead studs, the only thing you have to be able to do physically is make it through whatever it is they throw at you in the certain restrictions that they assign, SF is the most mental of all SOF next to PJ and CCT.
>>
>>25094351
Since when do 19Ds work with SOf and do clearing instead of recon
>>
I would strongly recommend NOT going into the 18X program. Here is why:
If you fail, you will be an 11 series. (A basic Infantryman)

You can apply for SF with any MOS, some a lot more useful than a basic infantryman. And if you fail you can try, try, and try again without losing your base MOS. If you go into the 18X program you will be competing against trained veterans and you'll be just another kid off the block. It is possible to make it, but you're chances of not getting selected are like 98%.
>>
>>25095035
Best friend died in a blue on green attack. I had had a sense something was wrong(attitudes were off among the iraqis)but didn't act on it until too late cause I thought I was just being paranoid. Guilt drove me to drink & attempted suicide.
>>
>>25095191
Sorry to hear that man. Blue on greens are really fucked up
>>
>>25095189
What MOS would best prepare me for the 18x program?
>>
>>25094943
Same team in the same way 19D are. In other words not at all. 19D train recon & unconventional warfare, but not the language part.
Yes, it's just a 16 week OSUT, but it's followed by 14 months of training at your unit before you're considered fully trained.
>>
So you're speaking out your ass then I assume? 18x and prior service have about the same chance of making it through the pipeline.
>You can apply for SF with any MOS, some a lot more useful than a basic infantryman.
Yeah if he wants to wait 4 years,
>but you're chances of not getting selected are like 98%.
You have sources of this?
>>
>>25095214
Infantry. That's the catch 22
>>
>>25095187
Since we replaced a 4th ID brigade with a cav squadron and had a city to contain. 19D is recon, but can be officially tasked with any duties of any other combat MOS, and most support MOS. I had the dubious honor of being the official CAS guy, cause I was good at FO training.
>>
>>25095224
18X and prior service have nowhere near the same selection rates. 18X commonly get turned away because they don't have any experience.

If you really want to go SF go Ranger, do a training cycle, go get your tab, then when you get back go to SFAS. Your chances are a lot higher if you have your tab, and the most sure way to get your tab is being in Regiment.
>>
>>25095219
>19D train unconventional warfare,
lol is all I have to say
>>
>>25095263
I will say that rotary wing CAS is much easier to coordinate than fast movers.
>>
>>25095273
>18X and prior service have nowhere near the same selection rates. 18X commonly get turned away because they don't have any experience.
And yet the 18X program provides a steady stream of candidates that go on to fill SFOD-A's. Well 18X anon feel free to eat up this man's lies cluelessness.
>>
>>25095274
>taught to make IEDs, destroy bridges, create improvised barriers in every environment
>SERE lvl 2 standard, as well as everything covered in ARC and LRR.
No, it's not the same level of unconventional warfare as SOCOM does, but the training is to operate 50+ km behind enemy lines w/out support.

How does one prepare for option 40?
>>
>>25095521
Which regiment? There's a bunch. They all should have recon units of scouts. Usually a squadron that's split up and tasked out to protect the infantry and tankers.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._Army_armored_cavalry_regiments

>>25095527
That really depends on what's going to happen with Russia, I think. Korea's always a combat deployment for scouts too, sitting up there on the DMZ in observation posts.
>>
>>25095414
What do you mean turned away? Like denied at sfas?
>>
>>25095577
I mean the 75th
>>
>>25095577
>Which regiment?
I'm an idiot sometimes. No, not as far as I know. There are a few scouts who have their tab, but the Regiment doesn't have 19D in their MTOE. They get Long Range Recon training to make up for it.
>>
>>25095632
How much training did you get compared to a LRS and to regular 11Bs? I'm planning on joining after I get my degree. My main goal is Ranger Regiment but due to circumstances outside my control I'm forced to volunteer in OSUT. that said I'm trying to set myself up for a career/enlistment where I get to do things instead of painting rocks
>>
>>25095572
Get good at push ups and running. Those are the two biggest things that'll probably help you in RASP that you can work on in the civilian world. Other then that just don't quit when you get to RASP.

Everything else is relatively easy enough to pick up when you're there.

>>25095581
Yeah after SFAS is where I'd here about guys getting turned away. Again I'm not saying guys don't make it, but your chances are nowhere near as good as somebody who's prior service- combat arms related.
>>
>>25095700
Fuck if you're telling people to go to the Regiment before SF they might as well try for Delta or ISA instead
>>
>>25095715
I've read from softer and shadows pear that going from 75th to SF is considered a lateral move, because if you fail you're not welcome back at regiment
>>
>>25095759
*sofrep
>>
>>25095672
See>>25095219
I can't compare to 11Bs because there wasn't much cross over. Most of my time in was spent with my truck crew and fire team (4 people instead of the 8 or 9 infantry have). Scouts have a lot more freedom to operate independently than any other MOS, but that's from necessity.

LRS teaches enough that an infantry unit can get by without having scouts, but doesn't cover everything, just hiding and SALT reports, AFAIK
>>
any guys in here work with TACP? i know they work with rangers a lot, im just wondering what the general attitude towards them is
>>
>>25095715
You're more likely to get into SF then CAG or ISA. But you can go to SF with a lot less experience then you would need for CAG.
>>
>>25095715
wut?

It's a well know fact that ranger selection is easier than SF although both are hard as fuck. Ranger is actually a very common stepping stone for people going to SF.
>>
>>25095857
No it's not. Very few Rangers go from Regiment to SF. More Rangers go from Regiment to Delta than SF. Do a search on shadowspear. Something like 3x more Rangers go to Delta than SF.
>>
>>25095189

Lol that's bs. Read some of the forums and check out books like "Chosen Soldier"

Alot of 18x make it because they don't have bad army habits and theyve been doing land nav all up until their selection.
>>
>>25095114

A friend of mine who was a CCT before he got older, injured, and wanted to spend time with his family said he would kick in doors with SF while managing vertical deconfliction in his head.

So yeah, AFSOC is pretty cerebral in addition to the general doorkicker skills.
>>
