the first time i ever shot a gun was at an indoor range.
someone next to me was shooting a 44 mag and it felt like it was kicking a puff of air our of my lungs every time he fired.....

I don't get all this "the loudest thing you've heard in your life" stuff. I grew up with a dad and grandfather who didn't really give two shits about earpro, I've shot 12 ga shotguns in cinderblock and it was manageable. Having rolled a pickup and been to a few punk shows, I can say there are louder things than a gun that you don't have to be under bombardment to subject yourself to.

Sad thing is this reminds me of a friend who shoots without earpro. His justification is that the guys you would be shooting at wouldnt give you time to put your earpro in. He is also in the army if that is relevent

I have a friend who's a 17 year special forces vet. He reads lips very well, after about 4,000,000 rounds fired during his career. Yeah, I use hearing protection. Active type, custom moulded to my ear, goes past the canal bend so it's a very effective plug.

Speaking of earpro, an old friend of mine shot on the Army rifle team at Fort Eustis in the 1950s. .30-06, .308, and .300 Winmag for some reason.

My 12g doesn't bother me either, but I have heard artillery guns fire from a distance of about 2 feet (obviously with 2 layers of hearing protection) so maybe it's just that most people don't hear much loud shit.

The nugget's more like a big ol' "dealywhop!"
Pistol-caliber carbines sound like "klor, klorklor."
AKs and SKS are generally more of a "sacklunch, sacklunch" kind of sound.
The AR platform is kind of a "thark."
Hi-Points all make a "crunk, crunk" noise.
Interestingly enough, HK pistols go "glock, glock, glock," but so do Glocks.
