Three new OPV's the Royal Navy is acquiring.

Nothing fancy. Just 30mm cannons even on a 2000 ton hull, but they can mount a large helo and have loads of storage space with good endurance and decent speed. Really, the only reason they were made was because there was a gap in construction between the carriers and the new frigates and you can't leave the builders without work.

So they just ordered a few cheap OPVs because why the hell not? It's an extra 6000 tons to do stuff. Will all be finished by 2017.

We really need the FREMMS, the whole eleven that will be built at the shipyard including two in anti-air variant and a few with 127mm main gun, but we'll be lucky if we have nine of them total, and fuck if we know if we will receive the variants. If the Lafayette have to be magically turned into first rank combat ship like the last white paper suddenly decided them to be, they need a gigantic retrofit of their sensors and weapon systems plus the inclusion of antisub torps and Aster 15. And don't even get me started on our OPV, the planned number shrinked to 15, and we have no idea yet what it will look like. The only good sign is that the french navy didn't want to keep the Adroit prototype OPV they trialed from DCNS, it seems they aim for something beefier than it. We have a navy barely larger than the italian one yet have the second largest EEV to patrol.

Unfortunately the recent White Paper only made room for 8 in total.

Let's hope they change their minds.

>The only good sign is that the french navy didn't want to keep the Adroit prototype OPV they trialed from DCNS, it seems they aim for something beefier than it.

Did they get rid of it? I thought they still had it. Always thought it looked swish, but it was clearly not what was intended.

With only one carrier the MN is really limited. When it's not operative they are fucked.
The CdG will go in drydock from 2015 to 2018. The bong's QE will be fully capable by 2020 but by 2018 they will have some limited capability.
It means that for 3 years Italy will be the first ranked carrier navy in Europe. Let that sink in.

And by the way, even Italy with two carriers has limits. The Garibaldi entered overhaul in october 2013, the Cavour in april 2014. Both are scheduled to be back in active duty by the end of this month. This means that for 7 months Italy had no back up for the Cavour and for 7 more had no active carrier at all.

Not sure if they still have it or not, I believe it might extend up until december, but the navy didn't extend the lease and trials, and DCNS is looking for a buyer. It made for a great police boat, but it is simply too light for the sovereignty enforcement missions OPV have to perform.

I see. Are there any designs on what they do want?

It's kinda strange that the UK doesn't use heavier OPVs given we have overseas territory and lots of needs too. Usually there tends to be a full frigate or destroyer sent.

This is what confuses me about USN amphibious assault ships; they lack ski jumps despite carrying STOVL jets. Is it because handling helicopters is the primary purpose of the flattop?

I think it's pretty much a case of the RN budget has been whittled down so they have the minimum of number of MFUs for the jobs on hand. Politicians look at OPVs and go 'thats a ship, you don't need frigates'.

There is no budget to man or run the three new OPVs. They have only been bought because of a contractual obligation to pay BAE even more money than the ships are worth if they didn't order something.
So Admiralty will probably have to retire at least one frigate to man the OPVs.

Objectively untrue. If they want to run the new OPVs they'll just retire the 3 older River Class OPVs.

They've already said the decision is based on them or not.

That sounds like bollocks to me. OPV's have nothing like the operating cost of a frigate, and there's no shortage of crew.
