My concern with platforms is not damning, to be sure. There are advantages. Here are my concerns:
1.) Maintenance: manpower, know-how, materials.
2.) utility of space: low. not a whole lot of sqft, less of it usable, inclement weather and you're shitstormed (in some cases literally) for a few days.
2.1) HOWEVER there are some advantages. Fishing platforms, energy generation via ocean currents, could potentially be converted/modified for easier fleet access for deep water instead of dealing with ports/port construction.
3.) supplies. Logistics of getting them out there and back. We'd want it as self-sufficient as possible, ferry rides all the time for food and necessities out to our glorified lighthouse can be cost and time prohibitive....

All of that aside, what would we want the platforms for? Housing? If so we can probably* find better alternatives. Training ground seems feasible... I don't know, it depends what we actually want the platform -for-.

Those are all very good for a pros and cons list, no option will be perfect and obviously an island would be far better. No matter what our setup would be, we would want it to be as self sufficient as possible since we'd basically be making steps towards forming our own nation.

As far as maintenance and manpower goes, we wouldn't need a rig until we were big enough, and by that time we could probably accumulate the resources to hire a maintenance crew to keep the rig functioning at capacity. Weather is going to be a bitch even for an island, especially in areas prone to hurricanes like the Atlantic.

And then of course there's the issue of cost. Like your link says, a rig could be up into the hundreds of millions, which we simply wouldn't have to spare in our early steps but to make more money we would need more men so this is a complicated issue. If we got lucky, our best option would be to buy a cluster of islands that would be big enough to actually inhabit and make bases on, since islands are a lot less costly and easier to sustain ourselves on. I don't think anyone here wants to be landlocked since that brings up all sorts of issues but other than islands or oil rigs I don't see many other options. Maybe we could eventually obtain some carriers as mobile bases.

As long as we're on an island, we could use whatever wildlife on it and in the surrounding waters for food at least until we get a connection on rations. As far as arms go, I'm not sure what our standard weapons would be once we become more operational, we'd have to take a vote or something and depending on which weapon we use would determine where and how we get our ammunition and all that. Otherwise we'd just have to use whatever weapons we already own for the time being.

As far as contracts go, I think we should be available to anyone as long as they aren't doing some seriously fucked up shit like slaughtering children or something. I'd personally prefer if we kept it sort of like MSF and stayed away from ideologies and whatnot, and to not get involved with a country's politics or let it affect our work.

No, I was on a couple threads about the island in the Indian Ocean & South of New Zealand.
Grains and vegetables mainly.
