But woke up one morning and he was dead. Sent me into a bad depression, ended up dropping out of college. I've since got a good job and generally have my life together, but there's still some dark shit in my head from that time.

Planning on stamping his initials somewhere on it. More than an honor to all the laughs and info this board has given me, it's going to be a binding of the past. Really glad you guys have been successful.

"Ave Nex Alea" is really the only correct way. Let me explain my logic.
"Ave" was the term used to hail the Imperator of Rome; it is a salutation for someone far above the speaker.
"Nex" means murder, slaughter, death with a violent connotation. "Alea" has a number of meanings: one is "cube" but the others are related to dice and chance, which fits nicely with our salute because we're praising the /k/ube as a god, essentially hoping for a divine being to shift the odds in our favor. "Nex Alea" together can be translated to "Murder/k/ube," which was the original name of the /k/ube.

Grammatically, "Ave Nex Alea" is not perfect (or so I've heard, I'm no expert in Latin grammar). Consequently, there have been proposals and efforts to change the salute to some of those other things. I oppose this for two reasons. Firstly, the original, with the slaughter and chance, is so much more fitting. Secondly, the original has already been adopted and is well-established. You don't change that. "Ave" is the proper salute. "Nex Alea" is a proper noun, not just a phrase; it is the chosen name for the thing it refers to. One does not arbitrarily change proper nouns. You don't name a child one thing and then, several years later, say "your name is grammatically incorrect so I'm going to start calling you something different." You just don't.

Ave - present second person imperative of avere, which in a salutation translates to "hail." you're telling other people to wish well being to the object of the verb avere

Cubum - accusative form of cubus, Latin for the shape cube. accusative means it is the object of the verb, so translated it would be "to the cube"

Necis - genitive form of nex, which means "of death"
