.308 is a good marksman round and you'll get decent range out of it. Something like a .338 Lapua Magnum will get you out past 1000 yards easy but the rounds are expensive and guns chambered in .338 Lapua are also expensive.

Call me picky, but I only like homemade weapons built on platforms that already exist, like OPs pic. Most of the single shot or homebrew mag fed stuff is just hideous. There are some exceptions like that weird smg thing with the Walther laser, a lot of the Chinese, Vietnamese and Aussie factory builds, and occasionally a well done pistol, but mostly AK, AR, sten or other old-school repros get me off.

I've been working on the design parameters for the "ultimate" homemade gun

>telescoping bolt, grip fed
>dust cover/safety/charging handle arrangement stolen from an M3 Grease Gun
>collapsible or folding stock, fold-up front grip
>as concealable as possible
>as effective as possible at engaging targets when fired one handed as a pistol
>as effective as possible at engaging targets when fired two handed from the shoulder as a rifle
>must be possible to make with a dremel, a stick welder, and maybe a drill press
>final design name must be an acronym that spells some type of racial slur against black people

Sidenote: how effective was the Puma? I know it had a decent gun, decent speed, and meh armor. It would have made a decent speedy tank destroyer but knowing the Germans I feel it wasn't used like that much?
