I've been considering building guns as a hobby. How hard is it to be licensed as a gunsmith in the good ol' US of A? Is it even viable to take gunsmithing up as a hobby?
16 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
You don't need a license to build your own guns. It's 100% legal.

If you have the knowhow and tools, have at it.
>>
>>27935137
Wrong. In certain states you need to be a licensed manufacturer. These are very few though.

Hey /k/. I recently got my first decently paying job and moved from California to Arizona. I'm thinking about taking advantage of the greater freedom here to purchase my first gun. I've fired .22s in the Boy Scouts and enjoyed it immensely, even getting the merit badge, but know very little about specific firearms.

I'm looking for three basic requirements here:
1) Affordability. I make about $800 every two weeks and would like this gun and its ammunition to stay well within that range.
2) Self Defense. I'm in a pretty decent area but I'm near some rough parts of town. Just in case there's trouble I'd like this gun to be able to help me out in a jam.
3) Fun. I've gone to a firearms range several times and found that I enjoy shooting. I'd like a gun that I can take out to most ranges and have some fun with.

Any suggestions /k/?

Grand Power K100 is the best handgun at its price point.
>>
SW MP9 is a great one.
XD9 (which i just picked up for a steal, and got 4 mags and a pistol bag for free)
Glock 19/17
HK VP9
Pick something reliable and chambered in 9mm and youll be happy
>>
>>27934844
You can't go wrong with a 1911. You can get a good one from Ruger, Springfield for under $800, and from what I've heard RIA has pretty good budget 1911's too at around $500. .45 will get the job done, but it's a little more expensive than 9mm, and if you want something with more mag capacity and cheaper to buy and shoot you can go with a glock 17 or 19 in 9mm.

do bullets expire?
50 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>27934783
Depends on how they're stored. Most ammo manufacturers recommend that you don't store ammo for more than a year, but if it's stored in a good moisture free area then theoretically it can be stored indefinitely. I've shot ammo stored for more than 20 years out of my dad's safe before and all but 2 rounds fired just fine. So really the answer is it depends, but it's always worth trying to shoot as long as it's not visibly damaged in any way. Hope that helped OP.
>>
Everything expires given the correct time and circumstances.

Properly stored, ammo will generally last longer than you'll live. Leave it underwater and it will become useless pretty quickly.
>>
>>27934834
>>27934849

that leads me to me second question:

what is the best way to store ammo?

Hey /k/

Don't want this to be a sap story but I'm confident that many of you have great answers for me so just hear me. out.

During the end of my sophomore year and engineering uni I was "appoached" by a US naval recruiter trying to get naval engineering officers. I Was incredibly interested in the dive engineering program so I signed up as possible enlistment or whatever. Technically you don't "join" the military until you graduate with you engineering degree but they put you in programs that get you ready and shit before sending you officers training. My grades checked out perfectly, I passed the first and simple physical exams into the middle of my 5th semester.

The recruiter told me is was time to get a very thorough physical examination. Went through it and a few weeks later my recruiter met with me again and sadly told me the US Navy would not be able to admit me. After asking why he told me my blood exam with anomalies. He said the the EKG heart exam showed I have two serious heart defects. Based on this information he said the US Navy could not allow a sailor in my condition to join for liability purposes.

I knew about the heart defects. When I was in highschool football practice I suddenly collapsed and was put into a self induced coma for 26 hours. Docs say the only way to fix it was to do x and X and bla bla. So I did and I thought it was fixed. Not according the US Navy. Right now I'm on a heart transplant list which is incredibly corrupt making it safe to believe it will never happen.

Whatever though. I got a boring ass job as a structural engineer. None of it invlolves defending my Country or anything.

I'm still young though (24) and was wondering if other branches of the military cared about heart defects?

Does any /k/ bro know of any way to get around this? Is it morally right to join the military with a heart defect?

Great if you get an M1.

I sold my M2 that I bought after they had stopped making the M1 for a while and before the VP9 came out. Now I'm torn between picking up a VP9, a PPQ .45, or a P226.

It's okay, but I did sell it after getting a Glock 19 and realizing that I preferred the Glock over the PPQ but that is all preference and ymmv.

I have 3 of them. great guns. if you want a 9mm or 40 get the M1. Unfortunately you dont have a choice with 22 or 45

Does pic related do any kind of worthwhile Black Friday sales? Particularly on parts kits?

I have a lower I want to do a build on and I'm trying to find some discounted parts kits. Wondering where I should be looking next Friday.

Bump for interest. I was looking at picking up this lower for a 20 inch build, but I don't know if I should pick it up now, wait for black friday, or just buy the parts and put it together myself.

What if someone made a small carrier, that can dock with other small carriers and conbine into a bigger carrier?

If anything happens to one of the ships, other can come and replace.

I guess the ideal size would be 1/4 of current aircraft carrier. Something around 170x40m of size.

They could combine into several formations, depending on the type of aircarft that is needed.

The standard would be 4 small carriers combining into a single big one of 340m x 80m. It would have two flight decks.

Or it could combine into one single line, making it a huge 680m flight deck.

One torpedo blows and destroys one ship, no problem, just have another take its place.

It would be the revolution on the sea battles.

>can't assemble at sea unless you design a ram-resistant carrier with godly speed control and steering (good fucking luck)
>fuel storage and transfer becomes stupidly complex and labyrinthine
>munitions storage too
>how the fuck do you transfer aircraft from the front of meme supercarrier after it lands to the back before it can take off again?
>how the fuck would you arrange the elevator systems
>engine room is less armored and centralized on each mini carrier than on one normal carrier
>four conning towers reducing usable deck space instead of one, and they'd all have to be in the same location if any carrier wants to replace any damaged carrier
>painfully complex catapult assembly to make two catapults line up perfectly so it's usable across the entire length

Didn't someone have plans for a huge floating, modular airbase like this? Probably China. It would have used quite a lot of different modules though, while yours sounds like it would repeat one 'universal' type that could operate badly on it's own.

What cleaning brand do you guys recommend?
Some popular ones I see are froglube, clp, hoppes9, tuf-cloth/sentry solutions etc.

State what you use and why

I recommend Hoppe's #9 for a copper solvent/GP bore cleaner. I also use Butch's Bore Shine, but that shit's corrosive enough I don't recommend it to anyone who doesn't have someone present that uses it to show them how (it will literally eat your bore if you leave it in too long, has to be used in a ventilated area due to toxic fumes, and smells horrible).

For cleaning and lubing the action, I've been using both Break-Free CLP and Shooter's Choice FP10 for over a decade, they work well as a CLP and don't dry out too fast. Have also never had a single part of any of my firearms ever rust after being cleaned.
>FP10 is the only lubricant allowed to be used by USAMU shooters as it retains a constant viscosity regardless of ambient temp or humidity
>>
>>27933945
Thanks for your input anon - I am new to guns and need to clean mine.

What do I need to get besides patches - Should I get a bore snake or like an aluminum rod

What do you guys recommend in that regard
>>
For cleaning
>warm water
>non-harsh dish soap (specifically the cheap ajax kind, ffs don't get actual ajax toilet cleaner)
Reasons
>had bad experiences with solvents stripping the finish on my guns (namely Hoppes no. 9, fuck that walmart tier stuff it ruined my makarov) anyway dish soap works great, smells great, cleans more completely than anything I've used and doesn't leave residue.

For lubricating/rust protection
>hornady one shot on springs and other small parts
>frog lube on moving parts
Reasons
>long term rust prevention, some of my guns I leave sitting for perhaps years without taking them out. The frog lube is tacky and doesn't run like most oils, so it stays where it needs to be to keep the parts protected.

You can also use wheel bearing grease, same shit less expensive, but a bucket of frog lube doesn't cost all that much and its basically a lifetime supply. If anyone knows of a non-scented version of frog lube or wheel bearing grease let me know, I'm worried the added scent might not be good for hunting.
