The year is 2018. You're the captain of an American militia staging an uprising against the government. You're in a deserted urban environment in downtown Austin Texas. There is a tank patrolling the street, it's alone but fully manned. You're going to launch a raid on it. Your mission is to disable, destroy, or capture it taking minimal casualties.

You only have the munitions that you've scavenged from the local gun store and the supplies you've found in the local homes and businesses. What tactics/weapons would you use to surround and neutralize it?

What beats a tank? Could you jam the barrel? Fog up it's sensors? Clog up the exhaust ports? In Saving Private Ryan they constructed a sticky grenade and blew it's treads off. Would this really be effective?

-Smoke it
-Spray paint its optics
-Clog all vents

Light it on fire, that'd be annoying.

Try making an EFPIED.

The best way to destroy enemy tanks in that scenario is sabotage or denial of fuel to where they are coming from. Or getting the crew to defect.

Fighting abrams with nothing to feasibly knock them out is suicide and would be a waste of time and effort.

if you want firearms that badly, move to a not shit country
>>
Building simple firearms is pretty easy, and just about anyone can learn how to do it. You can build a "Luty" SMG if you have some basic tools and are capable of following simple instructions. There are some components which require more specialized tools and real skill (such as rifled barrels), and you need to acquire a good supply of ammunition for your gun.

Anyone who is smarter than average moron can build a "four-winds shotgun".

However, airsoft toys are almost useless in firearm building.

>During the final stages of his U.S. Army Special Forces Qualification Course in December 2005, Gene Yu was in the Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) phase of the program. In accordance with the requirements of the training, Yu only carried his military ID card and a knife. Yu and his classmates were also expected to learn to live off the land, and as such, ate very little. In the final days of the evasion portion of the school and motivated by hunger, Yu left the boundaries of the exercise and came upon a group of Guatemalans in the North Carolina forest. Using Spanish skills acquired during extensive foreign travel, Yu was able to convince them to give him a ride to the nearby town of Aberdeen. After reaching Aberdeen and being rejected by a convenience store, Yu directed the group to a Papa John's Pizza's location he knew he could pay of and he then ordered pizzas and other food at the restaurant. He knew he could pay without an actual physical credit card, and with a memorized credit card information and his ID card because he had done it in the past at other Papa John’s restaurant locations. Yu returned to his classmates with the food. Though they destroyed the evidence of the pizzas, Yu was later found with the receipt during the resistance phase of the school during a strip search that was part of the training. Yu was initially forced out of the U.S. Army Special Forces Qualification Course, despite only being short one day of graduation, but was later able to repeat the class and receive his Green Beret. While some saw the incident as a typically creative Special Forces-type of solution to the SERE challenge, and his story is still reportedly told as a cautionary tale to incoming students to the SERE program by its cadre (albeit without Yu’s name and with the consequence of having been being forced out of the school).[2][5]

TOP KEK. I have an opportunity to goto SERE, should I do it?

But really, the gustav is outdated garbage from 1940's that is useful as a general purpose rocket launcher, whereas the RPG-29 is a much more advanced AT launcher meant to engage MBT's.

It's really hard to answer that question, because there's lots of different SOF units and there are some differences between them.

For example, if you're in a special mission unit, you don't really play by Army rules at all, and your performance evaluations are classified. Those types of units do their promotion boards in house, completely separate from normal Army promotions, and I don't know what their promotion rates are like.

More "normal" SOF units play by Army rules... for enlisted it's easy promotions up to around SFC, then pretty average above that. Officers, from what I've seen, are about the same as in other branches.

If you're actual 18 series SF, you're going to stay in SF units unless you get a really unusual job. For SF support, it's just a duty assignment for you, and the next time you PCS, it's probably going to be to a conventional unit.

For non-18s, you don't want to stay at SF units too long. Promotion boards want you to have a wide variety of assignments and units, and you need some "real Army" in there with the cool stuff, or else you won't be competitive.
TL;DR Not very different

Are main battle tanks now obsolete?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_battle_tank#Cold_War

>The United States's experience in the Vietnam War contributed to the idea among army leadership that the role of the main battle tank could be fulfilled by attack helicopters. During the Vietnam War, helicopters and missiles competed with MBTs for research money.

>Though the Persian Gulf War reaffirmed the role of main battle tanks, MBTs were outperformed by the attack helicopter. Other strategists considered that the MBT was entirely obsolete in the light of the efficacy and speed with which coalition forces neutralized Iraqi armour.

I think so, and the role of the attack helicopter itself will soon be superceded by low-flying urban combat drones, maybe even small robots with guns that can fly through doors to replace ground troops, as we put ourselves further and further away from man-on-man combat.

You won't be asking that if there's a line of them parked in an open field while supported by AAA and artillery, OP.

They work just fine when supported. The Russians even used them in urban areas in Afghanistan before Drozd came about. I don't remember the exact details of the vignette, but it's in "Bear Went Over The Mountain" if you want to read about it.

The author said something along the lines like "if it is stupid and it works, it is not stupid."

There will always been a need for MBTs, how they will look 20 years in the future i dont think many can say accurately, the same goes for attack helicopters.

The only reason i wouldnt say that attack helis will replace mbts is how fragile and maintenance heavy helis are

Helicopters cannot take or hold ground. Tanks can.

Its essentially the same reason as to why you need an army to invade and conquer territories. An Air Force can do a great job of supporting an invasion or defending against one. But to own real estate, you need boots and treads on the ground.

I'm back from the 5th dimension edition.

> When is it?

January 30th - 31st.

> Where is it?

Roughly in the middle of California near Fresno, along I-5. There are currently carpools being organized departing from the Bay Area and Orange County. Our Slack channel has the details.

> How do I get involved?

E-mail [email protected] to join our slack channel. There you'll get access to the carpool spreadsheet and more information.

> What do I bring?

Food and camping supplies to sustain you for as long as you intend to stay, the meet will last from Saturday morning to Sunday evening.

You are not required to bring your own firearms, myself and some others are bringing rifles and ammunition for those who don't own their own and wish to join the fun.

Unfortunately we can't bring clays around this time, lead and tannerite are both fine.

I'd like people to bring tables, shade, and targets as these are things I can't personally supply for everybody, we have a spreadsheet floating around for who-brings-what.
