Depends on the gun. Some claim to be designed so the slide is fully retracted and then released. Some claim to be designed for the slide to be released by pressing the slide release lever. Design aside, some are easier to actuate the lever than others. This is why I love my Glock 17 Gen 4 that I bought a few weeks ago for only $310.49. It works either way I do it. Plus I saved a lot of money.

Either way, it's not like anyone with an education thought the longbows killed the French knights, the longbows drove off the crossbowmen and goaded the French into ill advised charges across difficult terrain, which left then exhausted and out of formation when they reached the English fieldworks and English man at arms.
