ITT: what could have been.

http://youtu.be/fXeUkrlxQ98

Post real life Death Stars that were unfortunately never built even though it was possible.... Saner minds won this time.

I'll start with the obvious. The Project Orion Battleship. To quote the source, " It had enough nuclear bombs to devastate an entire continent (500 twenty-megaton city-killer warheads), 5-inch Naval cannon turrets, six hypersonic landing boats, and several hundred of the dreaded Casaba Howitzer weapons — which are basically ray guns that shoot nuclear flame (the technical term is "nuclear shaped charge"). "

Here is the source.
http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/realdesigns2.php

Just go to that link and word search "Orion Battleship" to get the full info.

It applies to all rifles. I don't really like lever guns. But i think that stock would be terrible on any non pistol grip rifle. Imagine a black k98 with that stock.

Not to mention Russia's been through plenty of wars not recently but they're not doing that hot. Same with most of Eastern Europe.

Need some advice on joining the military, and also how tanks are organized in the Marine Corps.

I'm currently at a maritime academy. The job outlook and hiring rate for mariners pretty much guarantees that I would be making $80,000 a year, if not six figures right out of the academy. However, I didn't go into the field for money, my family has a long history of service in the merchant marine.

However, we also have a long history of service in the military (dating back to the French and Indian War). I'd hate the see the tradition die with me, and I've also always wanted to be an officer in the Marine Corps and do something with tanks.

So, my questions, one of which is opinion and the other has to do with the organization of tanks in the Marines.

1) Would it be a good idea to give up 4 years of time that could be spent making $80,000 a year to do something that I genuinely want to do but the pay is shit in comparison?

2) What work does an officer do if he chooses to do stuff with tanks? I assume a Second Lieutenant commands a tank platoon, which is 2-4 Abrams. However, does he personally command a tank that is designated as the command tank? Or is it all from some control center somewhere far away? And what does a First Lieutenant do? Do they simply command more than one tank platoon? Finally, what does a Captain do in relation to tanks? Is there such a thing as a "tank company" fielded in the Marine Corps? If so, like before, is it something where the O-3 is in physical command of not only the company but also his personal tank, or does he simply oversee the operation of all of them?

>tl;dr
Want to do OCS after college and join the Marines due to tradition and a desire to do so. Not sure if I value that tradition higher than 4 years of making a ton of money doing something I also love. If I do join, what responsibilities do officers have in regards to Abrams tanks in the Marine Corps?

Also, I really don't want to make this seem like it's all about the money, but the returns I would be giving up on not pursuing a job as a mate on a ship for 4 years in exchange for serving my country for 4 years is literally on the order $100,000-$200,000. Because from what I can tell, until you get into flag rank type shit in the military, your pay is pretty abysmal, even as an officer.

Of course, I hear there are a lot of benefits to being a veteran. Not sure what benefits there are that I also wouldn't get with a good shipping company.

Are there tax breaks or something for military personnel? There has to be a reason people make careers out of it.
>>
>>31652192
What do you like better Tanks or Memerines? Because the army has bettter tonks. Also be careful they don't shove you ins something gay like Tracks or some shit
>>
>>31652255
I would specifically like to do the Marine Corps, even if their equipment is shittier. If I'm going to be an officer, it's either going to be doing something in the Navy or the Marines because I want it to be at least somewhat nautical related. But seeing that I'll be looking at water the rest of my life, I'd prefer to do the Memerines over the Navy.

And could they do that? From what I understood, if you score well enough in your class or the ASVAB, you could choose what you want your occupation to be, within limits. Like you can request infantry, but you can't specifically request whether you'd like to be an automatic gunner or a rifleman.

But I thought armor was its own division that only included MBTs. I thought IFVs and amphibious landing craft and stuff were a different thing altogether.

The only thing stopping me enlisting is the fact I couldn't deal with being spoken down to. With everything I've been through and all the experiences I've had and I'd have to deal with some cuck talking to me like a piece of shit? No thanks.

Thinking about buying a sword
Are Cold Steel MAA swords like pic related good?
They get high reviews and they seem to be high quality.
Should I get the Arming Sword pictured or the slightly bigger Hand and a Half Sword?
65 posts and 14 images submitted.
>>
Just for reference the Arming Sword pictured has a 28 inch blade and is nearly 35 inches in length where as the Hand and a Half Sword has a 33.5 inch blade and 45.5 inches in total length. So the hand and a half is about 10 inches longer in total and the blade is slightly longer.
>>
Also is Amazon a safe place to buy these Cold Steel swords without getting counterfeits? They are cheaper then on Cold Steels website but I obviously want the real thing.

It has been a very long time since the United States suffered a serious military defeat against a foreign power. Since the Korean war combat casualties have declined while press coverage has increased, a situation that has made the American public very sensitive to soldiers killed or wounded in action. Even decisive victories like the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War can badly damage public opinion by implying defeat is a possibility.

If during a war with some foreign power they dealt a blow like the Japanese did during the Philippines campaign would the public be able to handle it? How would it be presented by the press if a major base was completely overrun and most of the personnel on site killed, captured or wounded?

Would we see livestream footage of it happening?

Would there be tweets?

It seems like the very connected nature of todays social media would make a defeat like that extremely demoralizing. This isn't a thread about who, what, how but one about how the aftermath would be handled.

>>
In this scenario the United States would probably be on a total war footing. The populace would be dedicated to winning the war and while the defeat would damage moral, they'd still be committed to beating the other guys.

People seem to be more inclined to bitching about combat deaths when the wars are in 3rd world shit holes with ambiguous reasons for interventions. Killing sand niggers/nation building v. a full scale war.

>You mean like defeat in Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan. Like those defeats.

At no point in any of those wars did the United States suffer 146,000 losses in a single engagement. Four times as many men died in a single engagement as the total from OIF and Afghanistan combined.

Are you equipped to handle aggressor groups made up of 20+ members?

Why not?

Mobs can tire you out, so out running them is not always an option.

Was looking at footage of Libyan zerg rushes and wondering if any of these people even had a chance against a brain dead mob.

Smoke grenades

Tear gas

And keep running. Most of these riots happen at night.

You can have these as a individual and use them to your advantage.
>>
>>31651475
>Are you equipped to handle aggressor groups made up of 20+ members?
Conserve ammo, take accurate shots.
Virtually 90% of mobs are going to be dissuaded from following you and will disperse the moment a gun comes out.
Look at any hood clip, a gun comes out or goes off and everybody scatters.
If 20+ people are still pursuing you, you're probably being pursued by zombies.
>Mobs can tire you out, so out running them is not always an option.
I'm a pretty decent runner, I can hold an 8min mile for at least 3 miles daily, probably 5 or 6 if I was under serious threat, combined with the above situation and a gun I feel I'd be pretty safe.

When mobs are involved, that is essentially what you are dealing with. Humans as individuals can be reasoned with.

Humans as a group need to be engaged with deadly force. There is no room for talking.
