They build guns now so you can use ANY brand or type of ammo in a given caliber.

As general advice to a newbie, I would....
1. Avoid buying steel case ammo, since it's generally now allowed at indoor ranges, and may bind up inside of double stack magazines (this depends on the exact quality standards of the ammo manufacturer, which varies). That said, if you find that your gun cycles steel case fine, there's nothing wrong with shooting it - it won't damage your weapon.

2. Generally avoid buying aluminum case because it can also be unreliable (though not as big of an issue as with steel case).

3. Generally avoid buying reloads, as they are often loaded by amateurs and can have issues with powder charges. You'll find reloads more at gun shows than in gun stores.

4. Generally prefer American-made ammunition, as standards for quality in America are typically a little higher than in other countries, and you are supporting domestic production. However, many foreign ammo brands are every bit as good as American ammo.

As long as a type of ammo is brass case, new production, then it's good to go. FMJ = cheap practice ammo. JHP = self-defense ammo, not intended to be shot in large number at the range.

Stainless FNX masterrace reporting in.

It took about 3,000 rounds, but the chamber contact points look funky once it starts to wear in.

Also, it's superficial but after a day at the range the breech face and muzzle end of the slide are covered in residue.

If I had to do it again, I'd get the black on black.
