.308, .270, and .30-06 will kill any NA game animal ethically out to 450-500m, provided the proper bullet. There's a reason they're the 3 most popular hunting calibers in America and Canada, and rifles and ammo in them can be found at literally every sporting goods store on the continent. Any of the 3 would be a good choice for caliber, and the only real difference is if you want to trade velocity for mass or vise versa.

As far as the actual rifle, what's your budget?

Savage Axis XP package, stick with packaged scope (Bushnell 3-9x40)

Ruger American plus something like a Nikon Monarch 3 2.5-10x42 scope

Browning A-bolt 3 with any number of mid-range 2.5-10x scopes

Still an A-bolt 3, but I highly recommend a Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x42, it's a great scope in what's generally an ideal magnification range for most hunting.

When you get back from the range and have to clean 10+ of your firearms (and I mean REALLY clean it until your patches run white because you don't want your Kar98k to corrode), you'll see it gets old fast.


That's why I check that all of my firearms are clear, poor a double Wild Turkey and get to cleaning with the radio on. Makes it better, but it's still a bitch.
One or two guns isn't bad, though.

It is my edc. Conceals well. Stock trigger is shit though (when compared to my other pistols) but Apex makes affordable spring and trigger kits that vastly improve it. Throw on some trijicon hd or ameriglo sights and some talon grips and it's damn near perfect.

5.56 minigun fired too fast and had no monopod. It was only usable standing and could have gotten soldiers killed. This wouldn't be used only as a conventional MG but as an area saturation weapon and morale booster. Imagine seeing this big Arnold Schwarzenegger looking dude holding a minigun from the future, firing kraut space magic from a badass looking 5 barrel minigun at 2-5k rpm.
