First-time buyer here, looking to get a 9mm for range shooting and home defense. Not sure how to narrow down my options any further.

Check out the USP series. They take a little getting used to but for a first gun that shouldn't be an issue because you won't have to retrain. The p30 is really nice too but I like the USP for looks more.

Learn boxing. you'll dodge and counter attacks via way of speed, reflexes, footwork, space control, and timing.
learn grappling, you'll learn the necessary wrist control to disarm or at the very least stifle a knife wielding attacker.
practice with fake rubber plastic knives with formidable training partners.
do all that and you're a better knife fighter than hacks like Doug Marcadia and all those Krav maga/Kali larpers

I know that mounted infantry (your regular soldier riding a horse) was a thing in Afghanistan because no roads and fucking rocks.
It is now the only way to use horses in warfare ? Basically dragoons (ride horses but fight on foot) ?
I was thinking maybe a battle rifle would be better for a rider, since horses are big and loud (especially on pavement) and you'll be spotted from further.
the other option would be a bolt-action precision rifle to be a sniping skirmisher (kill one soldier, back on horseback, move to another position, kill another one). It could be the only task a woman would be better than a man because women tend to weigh less than men. less weight on horse's back improve his stamina and a mounted sniper doesn't suffer from the usual female cons (not strong enough, less stamina) cause you're not the one running and you can store some gear in the saddle's pouches.
It you have any idea about how to use cavalry (shoot on horseback) effectively in a SHTF situation, you're welcome. Of course remember that each horse breed is not adapted to the same needs.
