Why were forward-deployed Japanese forces in WWII so ineffective in combat? Under traditional military doctrine, dug-in defenders should be able to inflict 10 times the number of fatalities that they absorb.

This was not the case with Japan; they took far more far more deaths than they managed to inflict. For example, the Battle of Peleliu resulted in 2,336 American deaths but at least 10,600 dead Japanese - nowhere near the 106,000 or so dead Americans predicted by doctrine.

Where did Japanese forces go wrong? Was it poor training? Poor strategy? Both?

Overwhelming naval and air superiority. I've read a few memoirs and it cannot be overstated the sheer amount high explosive tonnage that was dropped on the japs. Also for some reason you're only counting "fatalities" and not wounds in your casualty counts. WW2 is not WW1, Many battles in WW2 had the attacker at the advantage, not the defender. For instance on Peleliu , stuck on an island without support, outnumbered and with inferior equipment, bombarded by carriers and ship cannons, a 1:1 ratio of casualties and surviving for 2 months was a pretty good showing, all things considered.

My impression was that naval and aerial bombing didn't have that much of an effect on Japanese island positions, because they were so dug-in. They were deep inside of tunnels and caverns prepared over the course of months or years. WWII-era conventional bombs were too feeble to reach them.

>he's a great athlete and plays football and basketball at a large public school
>naturally has some minority friends
>stays close with one black guy, I slowly make friends with him as he's a good guy at heart but considers us "crazy rednecks"
>we lose contact for almost five years
>he has some bad shit happen, ends up living on best friend's ranch while working to support his girlfriend at daughter at 22
>we reconnect
>every time I go to the ranch I talk him into shooting with me
>we've been shooting weekly on the ranch since Christmas, he now watches Hickok45 regularly and is saving up to buy his first gun
>now talks about how he wants to get proficient with firearms so he can protect his daughter and girlfriend if a happening happens or home invasion
>best friend indicates he's coming to ranch for his spring break, he graduates college in June and lives out of state as a D1 athlete
>first thing black friend says is "be ready for shooting Tuesdays, anon and I are gonna teach you a thing or two"
I'm really happy for the guy and proud.

I liked the combat scenes and that was about it, wish they spent more time on Bell's and Doll's character instead of dick riding the fact that George Clooney, John Cusack and Adrien Brody were in it for like 10 minutes of the whole movie.

I liked Woody Harrelsons character too, they killed him off way too soon.

Knowledge, SURPLUS MOTHERFUCKERS, odd shit (I'll buy ammo I've never seen because fuck it, it's cool) and also reloading supplies.

Call me a moron but nobody ever seems to have any surplus rifles or pistols anymore.

Just BE NICE. I'm so tired of walking into a store, stand around for 10 minutes waiting for the employees to finish their conversation and then get treated like they don't want my business.

Fuck, it's the reason I tend to prefer the nearby sporting goods store over my LGS for ammo because at least they'll take my money with no attitude.
>>
>>33334074
Surplus is pretty hard to buy into at this point. Most of the golden age of surplus shit is long gone.

I've got fucking everything when it comes to reloading. My shop's bullet section is almost as large as the ammunition section, and I try to keep at least 10 pounds of every powder in existence on the shelf.

Key /k/, I work at a restaurant and I got robbed at gunpoint today.
I live in Memphis, Tennessee and I was wanting to know how do I go about getting a conceal carry permit and what's a good gun that's not too expensive.
I've never used a handgun before, but my grandfather offered to take me to the range with him.

In my mind, I'm never gonna die in no ghetto. Absolutely never. A man turns around and punches me in the head, the fight's on; he cuts me, the fight's on; if I'm shot, the fight is on. I'm not losing no fight to no scumbag out there in no ghetto. Period. That's it. No son of a bitch out there is gonna get me. The only way he gets me is cut my head off and I mean that. I'll fight you til I've got a breath left in me. I don't think any of those animals in that street can beat me. I've been going that way for 18 years of street service and street duty, and that's the way I'm gonna keep on going. You don't lose the fight!
>>

Just get a ballistic knife bro.
>>
>>33333981
Read the sticky.

Then go to the state law enforcement website (most places let you apply online nowadays)

Fill out the form and pay their taxes and shit and then wait while they get your ready.

In the meantime go find a "shooting for fucktards" class, schedule yourself.

Ask the range if they'll let your rent a gun or eight, try them all (just 'cause one feels good doesn't be mean another won't feel GREAT.)

Try them, pick one, buy it (this is after your class hopefully. You can do these steps out of order depending on the class)

By now your CC permit ought to be good, and you should pick a holster.

As far as holsters go I'm clueless (I use shoulder holsters and pocket carry and if I can't do those then I usually just don't carry because I'm not dressed to leave the house)

Once a holster is obtained, you should be fine but remember shooting's a perishable skill so practice frequently.

Also, DO try both 9mm Luger and .45.
No, the .45 Will NOT give any advantage over the 9mm BUT some people just shoot better with that caliber.

Tell me why weaponizing them is a bad idea.
It must be, since very few historical cultures did it, while weaponizing other farming tools like scythes, flails, tridents and picks is quite widespread.

Because short-barrel scythes were illegal.
>>
>>33333788
There are treatises that depict sickle fighting, idk what ones, I'm not really a HEMA fag (yet).

But this guy is and he mentioned it here from 3:17 on ward.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er7h6bPn_7c&t=648s

Sickles are good tools though, i use one quite a bit in the summers, they are amazing at clearing light brush, the kind of stuff that's too light for machetes, but to much for something like a weed wacker.

I also have a hand scythes and a full size scythe, I don't see much use in the hand scythe, but I don't know how to properly use it.

This is the only pic I have with my hand scythe in it, it's in the bottom left corner.... I should just take a pic of it... but can't be bothered.
>>
>>33333788

They're heavy for their length, difficult to cut an opponent with, have generally poor leverage, and you can only stab with them from short range and limited angles. Not to mention that weapons that size were most often sidearms, and carrying a sickle at your belt would be a hassle and a half.

Basically they'd be a better weapon 99% of the time if you just straightened the blade some.

Alright /k/ommandos. Can I hit a man-sized target at 25 yards without a front sight? The shotgun I was gifted has a bead sight, but the bead was broken off flush. I don't want my inexperienced ass trying to drill that shit out. Nor do I want to pay a gunsmith. So...it has a rear groove, but no front sight. Can I still hit paper at with it without a front sight? Any techniques or practice I can use to git gud with what I've got? Thanks in advance.

Just try it and see what happens. You'll probably be fine.
>>
Sure, I do that with my Ithaca Stakeout which has no sight and a pistol grip.
>>
>>33333639
its a pretty easy fix, just drill a hole with a hand drill, and use a tap of the correct width of your new sight. or the ghetto way, just get like a fiber optic sight/rod, and tape it with duct tape or rubber band it to the barrel, or use gorilla glue and line your barrel and drop it.really any piece of shit. just glue or jbweld a piece of metal like a small washer or very short wood screw

Are you asking whether or not buying an M1 Garand is a good idea?
>>
>>33333141
If you're in NorCal, there's a rack full of them sitting at Elite Armory in Castro Valley. They're ex-CMP rifles that Elite got their hands on when they bought out the collection of the Chabot Gun Club after that shut down. They're asking $100-1200 apiece for them.

If you just want something CA-legal, an SKS or a Mini 14 are good options.
>>
Get a Garand. It's a little piece of history. I enjoy shooting them, when I get the chance. They are beautiful rifles. I like the carbine too. >.<
