I would say go with .308 for price alone - it will be more than adequate for your planned distances. You can always invest in a 6.5 Creedmoor rifle once you know you want to get serious about the sport.

honestly for the cost and range you might wanna look at other calibers. I mean you can use .308 if you want but -shrug- there are cheaper and more cost effective ways to shoot that range and actually learn a bit more about ballistics.

what you want is both mags facing up and staggered, you get a fucking piece of cardboard or ammo box fold it a fewtimes and use it as a a spacer. you stagger them so it wont hit the charging handle or dust cover

I personally wouldent. It would make them bulky and hard to carry in pouches, make your weapon a little heavier, if you are laying down to shoot you will have a fuck off magazine that will act as a monopod, only it will collect all the dust and shit from the ground.
