Howa 1500 may be worthwhile to consider as well. I wouldn't do the Axis, the ruger American predator is likely a better option in that budget but still a thin barrel.

OEM rifles in chassis are typically overpriced; buy the two separately. Tikka CTR in 24" 6.5CM is probably your best option; Whittaker guns $820.

A buddy of mine had a Howa, but he's so full of shit when it comes to shooting that I never ask his opinion on stuff.

.22 is ideal for self defense because you likely won't be wearing ear muffs in a panic, you also should use CCI stingers because they are just better.

There is no reasonable plan regarding the handling of the outbreak of a second Korean war that doesn't involve massive civilian causalities on both sides.
