mile shots are rare even in special forces, most engagements are much closer. they also aren't hunting fucking elk and bear.

tl;dr it's not needed if you took a second to think about what the caliber is good for and what most combat boils down to today.

You'd be better off with a mortar, or at least using it like a mortar. If mobility isn't a concern of yours they could be an easy enough way to lob heavy shit onto a fortified position from out of their line of fire.

I think that character idea would do well though if you actually shot the guns, since then we could at least get a good reaction.
