What gives?
It's a flat shooting cartridge with less recoil than 9mm and much better penetration making it good for armored opponents.

Because its went up in price since Obamas ban on russian everything. Costs the same as .45acp now. If it were equally or lower priced than 9mm it would be different.
Personally I love the caliber. It is probably one of the most comfortable calibers that I shoot (I also run a 45, 40, 9mm, 380, and .22lr) and recently used it for a combat shooting course. amazed the fuck out of people the punch it has.

I want to add a revolver to my collection. I don't have one and thought it would be fun. Plus I could start shooting ICORE matches which I've heard are very challenging. To keep within the rules I've settled on a 357 4" revolver. Since I'm looking competing I tried to focus on competition models.
Ruger GP100 match champion is the least expensive at right $700. I've heard it has a great trigger but I haven't been able to find one locally to try.
S&W 686 SSR.Not much more expensive at $760, and IMO much better looking. The trigger seemed fine to me when I test fired one. THe grip was very nice. The cylinder release felt a little weird but anything can be learned.
And then for weird factor the Chiappa 40DS. Right around $800. I thought the trigger was OK, but the cocking mechanism was awful. The grip was weird compared to the 686. But the lower barrel seems like it could be good for matches.
So what you recommend for a 4" revolver /k/?

I'm a /noguns/ and need good first gun recommendations. Something to take to the range and get comfortable shooting with, I guess. Shit-talking about <insert brand here> aside, what are my best options?
My interest in a firearm lies in having a basic last-resort means of self-defense for myself and my family.
I shot my dad's fudd rifles a little bit as a kid, so it's not the first time I've shot a gun, but not too much since he wasn't a big hunter.
I don't need a fashion accessory but can afford to pay for quality.

Recoil operated is kind of fun, it'll give you a good solid thump but they don't "kick" quite the same as a pump. Make sure you study up on the friction rings, aND if you ever need/want a different barrel, find a legit Remington barrel. Aftermarket barrels are shit quality and tend to warp in the receiver and are then useless. I have my Grandpas as well. Nice get OP.
