So I just won a DPMS Oracle at a raffle.

I have never owned an AR in my life and have nearly zero experience with them.

What the fuck do I do now.

I bought 500 rounds of this stuff for $45 before ever reading a review on it how fucked am I?

Also best .22lr? Is high velocity (~1400fps) bad for my rifles? Is Aguilar shootable? Is CCI the standard?

From Capoferro, published 1610
So much for the natural rights to arms
>The weapons which are of length exceeding the distance of natural defense and offense are ill suited and abhorrent for use in civic converse, and the excessively short ones are insidious and of danger to life; owing to which, in republics founded upon justice of good laws, and of good customs, it always was, and is, prohibited to carry arms of which can be born treacherous and heedless homicides. On the contrary, in the ancient Roman republic, the true ideal of a good government, the use of arms was entirely prohibited, and to no one, however noble and great that there was, was it licit to carry a sword or other weapon, except in war, and those who in time of peace were discovered with arms, were proceeded against as against murderers.

He's wrong about the Roman Republic. Carrying arms in ROME was illegal, largely for religious reasons (once politics got heated everybody ignored it anyways, so much for sword free zones).

If you carried weapons elsewhere you might get some strange room from normie citizens but as long as you weren't carrying a fucking sword into the baths or another persons home nobody gave two fucks what you brought around with you.

Just don't be that autist who insists on carrying a scutum and pilum at all times for "self defense" unless you're in the shitty parts of Gaul.

t. Time traveler
>>
Literally fucking who? Also, this dude knows nothing of Rome. Not only does he have their laws wrong (Was Caesar stabbed with law scrolls? Has he never read Luke 22:36?), and not know what their military structure was, but citing them as "the true ideal of a good government" is fucking mindboggling.

Flush this down the crapperferro.

DOTM & Marksmanship General

Old Thread: >>33928124

Welcome to Month 2 anons! Come shoot the Sweet 16 with us!

>rules in pic

>You don't have to shoot with a duty/carry handgun, but you are encouraged to, this is the "limited" division and the heart and soul of our drills
>you are free to modify the rules to enable people with restrictive ranges or atypical handguns as long as you remain within the spirit.
>Shooting with an odd duck gun or unconventional gun is considered in the "open" division
>you may shoot these drills as many times as you want and are encouraged to post results with pictures and content

>these threads are designed to promote participation and meaningful training and practice
>we try to be a little more friendly here, but joking around and typical /k/ humor is welcome

A ez mode target for this is a stack of note cards stapled/taped to a piece of cardboard

"The goal of DOTM is to have fun and get people shooting. With that in mind, shoot this as much as you'd like and share your results. However, some of the drills we post have a certain spirit to them. We encourage you to keep to the intent of the drill, as that will provide you with the most information about your level of skill and thus provide an accurate baseline upon which to improve."

HARDMODE RULES: Combine these rules with the base requirements for S16

Hard Mode Sweet 16:

Shooter will begin with a holstered pistol and with their hands at their sides/defensive position. Pistol is to be holstered in whatever you've got. However, if the holster is not concealed, subtract .5 sections from all PAR times; if the holster has a retention device, use the concealed PAR. On the signal, shooter will draw and fire one round at the 3x5 card and, if successful, move back 1 yard, 3 misses in a row constitute a washout/fail.

Score is furthest distance of a successful hit.

PAR TIMES:

- All shots within 7 yards: PAR of 2.0 seconds.
- All shots between 8 and 15 yards: PAR of 2.5 seconds.
- All shots between 16 and 25 yards: PAR of 3.0 seconds.

>milsurp guns and ammo have dried up
>the scout rifle meme is the only reason most companies even offer bolt action rifles with iron sights on their non rimfire or magnum rifle lines
>even most new manufactured single shot rifles don't come with iron sights anymore
>ammo prices are still much higher than they were a decade ago, though .22lr is finally starting to come back down
>AR-15s have come down in price so far that it's unlikely any competing semi auto rifle design will ever make it beyond niche popularity on the civilian market, even AKs stopped being able to compete price wise a couple years ago
>previously good gun manufacturers are putting out shit
>most new handguns all look more or less the same
Looking back, I don't think I would have got into guns anywhere near as much as I did if the market then was like it is today. Does anyone else not like the way the market has been going?

Existing popular calibers have been around for 50+ years. It's only natural that guns chambered in them would eventually converge or similar designs, or just outright the same platform (1911s, ARs). The big changes recently have been in sighting (fiber optics, RDS, better variable optics), and ammunition (.300blk, 6.5mm CM/G, etc.). The really big hope is that parts of the NFA go away, allowing manufacturers more room to work with. Ruger is jumping out in front of this trend, manufacturing an integrally suppressed barrel for the 10/22. Do you really think Ruger of all companies would be doing this if the Hearing Protection Act didn't stand a solid chance of passing?

TL;DR Getting a 1895 Chilean Mauser in 308., and I'm not sure what ammo is safe to use.

So this is actually going to be my first gun purchase. I was looking around for an old shitty Mosin or something else cheap when I stumbled across this Mauser. Basically as cheap as any other C&R rifle I could find, and I have it on layaway right now.
Not worried about ammo cost, as I'll be reloading / handloading. Problem is, I've seen plenty of threads online saying that the construction of the Mauser simply isn't sturdy enough to handle standard 308. Winchester, and some are even afraid to fire 7.62 NATO or 7.62 CETME.
I've given the gun a look, and removed the bolt to check bolt and barrel for corrosion or cracks, and can't find any red flags, but I'd really appreciate some more experienced opinions, seeing as I'm totally new to the hobby. Any information on round pressures and recommendations for lower grain counts would be invaluable as well. Planning on shooting for recreation fairly frequently, and I'd like to make certain that I'm safe. Either that, or make sure my life insurance is paid up.

TL;DR: Will my 1895 Mauser in 308. explode?

>>33951044
Small ring mausers were made for a lower pressure round than .308.
The Chileans are not safe to fire due to the method of conversion. The barrel was rebored to proper .308 diameter and the chamber drilled out and a 308 chamber insert soldered in. The small gap typically left between the new chamber and the bore lets hot gases erode the solder and can eventually cause failure.

I'd keep it as a nice wall-hanger. You can read up on the details of why here:

http://dutchman.rebooty.com/1895Chile.html

The tl;dr is- they soldered in a .308 chamber insert into the barrel. This was so it could serve as an emergency back-up rifle in case of invasion.
>>
Alright, if that's the case, can this issue be overcome through regular maintenance and low grain / low pressure ammunition, or is this simply a fact of life for these 308 Mausers?

It's a questionable buy at 250 desu. I'm not gonna shot on the nugget, and I love mine, but I got it for 89 dollars years ago when the ammo was dirt cheap. It's not a bad deal these days, but it's not all that great either.
>>

The price is only going to keep going up, $250 is nothing special but not too bad nowadays either.

15 year old freshman HS student in CT circa 1992, buy a BP revolver from Cabellas because I'm too young to own a real one. Take it innawoods and try it out, it's fun but can't afford extra cylinders, takes forever to reload and lots of stuff to drag around. Decide to sell it to a friend and buy a shotgun. Bring it to school and we meet discreetly in lunch room because neither of us has a car. Friend is mild autist, pulls it out of box to inspect it and draws a small crowd. Here comes the gym teacher, makes a face. Tells me its illegal for me to own a handgun and I could be suspended for bringing a gun to school. Explain it's BP and legal to own, shrugs his shoulders and tells my friend to put it away and not take it out again or we'll both get suspended. Go back to lunch. That would probably be a national news story today, at the very least it would headline in CT. My life would have been ruined, probably prosecuted and expelled for something. Just a public service announcement from an oldfag how cucked our society has become.

What is the best performing pistol round (.44 mag and smaller) against humans in existence, going by FBI standards? So whatever has the largest expansion and around 15-20" penetration. .45 ACP expands to 1" but I've never seen anything better.

Expansion does not make "better performing".
The only reason JHP exists is to keep police departments from being sued. It is no more effective than FMJ in incapacitation, less reliable in feeding, and less penetrating.

Look at this chart. This is compiled from actual shootings, police reports, coroner reports, and so on. You really think .32ACP and .22LR are the one-shot stop kings because of expansion? No, it's because expansion is actually meaningless, and shot placement is EVERYTHING.

In short, JHP is a amazingly well-backed and long-running scam. Stop wasting your money.

Hey /k/,

So my ol' grandpa passed recently and I got this to remember him by. The tough SOB lived through Japan occupied Manila, joined the US army afterwards during Korea, and then worked for Boeing projects including the B1 program. Anyway, he said this was a Korean helmet, but it looks like they still used the M1 back then and the bad guys used something else. Can anyone shed some light on what kind it is? Looks sort of nazi-ish to me. Also, general Ye Olde Thyme gear thread? Post your antiques!
