Why were polearms so few in variety in ancient/classical world compared to medieval?

In medieval era we have dane axes, billhooks, halberds, glaives and all sort of cool shit.

In classic era, we got spears and pikes, that's it.

>what are advances in metallurgy that allow for more complex designs to be made with good quality and at low expense in massive amounts

Are you one of those people who thinks that technology had no real advancement between the end of the Western Roman Empire and the beginning of the Italian Renaissance?
>>
>>34175539
I forget that...sorry.
>>
>>34175518
You need advanced materials and forging techniques to build quality pole arms. At the classic period, real steel was much less available and forging and heat treatment was yet not well understood. So it is way cheaper an reliable to make a spear head or a javelin, or a lance blade if you want to aim big.
To complete that picture, you don't see fancy pole arms either in the migration period nor in the high medieval, they develop in the late medieval when there where substantial technical advances in metallurgy.
Now compare that to Indo-Persia where they had far better metallurgy, you'll find all sort of crazy looking weapons with elaborate forms.

I guess it would be hard to use realist fighting moves to push the plot forward or develop character. For good movies

And for bad movies, they just don't give a fuck i guess.

They didn't cut costs. They overstocked assuming hillary would win, and Supply forces took effect.

Oh neat I was about to start a similar thread.

I went into my LGS today and put a used Ruger MKII target pistol with a red dot attached on layaway. Gonna be $318 out the door tomorrow, I just had to make a transfer from my savings to my checking, I only had half in my checking at the time and didn't feel like putting it on my crebit card. Dropped $150 on the layaway today and queued the bank transfer for tomorrow morning.

I'll post pics if the thread is still up when I get it tomorrow afternoon.

Why does every red neck piece of shit adore the 556 platform?
Is this shit even effective? I hear horror stories all the time from operators claiming they shot some thing and the round just slithered right through, or shot some jihad in the chest 6 times but he kept going.

Yet I also hear some people say they have seen what a serious 223 wound will do and how violent they can get.

Does anyone have any statistics on this?
Is the x39 better in every concievable way?

Has this happened to anyone else? It look like it just clips back in but I'm worried it will be forever loose. Should I buy some upgrade sights and gorilla glue them in?

Will post pics in a min, but I think this shit is mildly corrosive. The gun has been in a case, and not stored in a humid place. I see some oxidation deposits in various places in the gun. I got most of them off, but I'll post them in a second.

I looked at a Rock Island Armory 1911 today, and it seemed pretty good. Are the more expensive brands really better, or is it a case of "paying more for the name"?

Both, but I would say it's diminishing returns. Consider rock island to be the cheapest you should go as far as 1911

from a functional practical standpoint ria is fine. as a base for upgrading its not that great and you do get what you pay for. ria makes a crude gun.

Besides roughly monthly range visits, I like to go shooting in the National Forest a couple hours from where I live. Normally just shoot whatever pistol I happen to be carrying, but sometimes I itch to shoot a long gun. Been thinking about getting something like pic related, or maybe an AR-7. Does anyone have experience forest-plinking with either? The only thing that makes me hesitate about the Chiappa is the single shot break action, I'm not sure if it would bother me. If the action is smooth I feel like I would enjoy it the same way I enjoy racking a slide or working a bolt. If it's gritty or cheap feeling, probably not. The AR-7 is a contender as well but I've heard accuracy is an issue. Again, not the end of the world, I'm not a huge accuracy freak and it's more about the fun of shooting a little target.

Sorry to drone on, basically I want advice on these and any other takedown 22s. Keep in mind I'll be using it hiking, so weight and packability is a big concern. I normally shoot for an hour or two but hike for a couple dozen hours over a few day trip, so a gun that takes up too much room will end up staying home.
57 posts and 12 images submitted.
>>
>>34202543
Why can't you just get a real rifle and sling it over your shoulder? I've hiked miles in the mountains doing that. If you want a 22, get a CZ 455. They are excellent rifles.
>>
>>34202562
Personal preference. I'm not ultralight by any means but heavy things get left behind. If a couple hours of shooting leaves me carrying around a 10 pound rifle for 50 miles, it's not worth it and it'll stay home (keeping my 10/22 company). I know these aren't great guns but they're niche guns, and I want a gun to fill a niche.
>>
>>34202631
If you buy a Henry-made AR-7 (not a Century Arms version) and feed it quality ammo, it won't let you down.

I'm an avid user of Armslist and ive noticed within the past 12 months gun prices have come down. There are still a lot of expensive things listed for sale but it seems like they just sit and sit and sit. Even the lower priced stuff isnt selling much without a deep discount.

I usually like to buy and trade but lately the market seems too saturated, particularly for AR's and polymer pistols and its spread into other things making me weary of any new purchases. I usually stick to the low end of stuff like $400 and below just out of necessity and because its easier usually to sell and trade but lately even athose rent selling to well. I have a hipoint 9mm carbine for example listed for $225 and it hasnt sold after a week.

I know with a repub president, new restrictions arent likely and the prices should come down but it seems to be more of an overall slowdown in sales volume, not like the prices are just trending down. I really think were getting to a point where there are just too many guns out there and not enough buyers at current prices. Anyway, what's /k/'s thoughts on the current domestic gun market in the USA?

Law of demand. When liberals are in charge people buy buy buy because we are on the brink of bans and seizures. When conservatives in charge, people hold off because guns aren't going anywhere.

Gun companies still gotta sell guns so they'll lower prices to sweeten the deal,

I still find it supremely ironic that Obama was the best thing to happen to the gun industry in decades
