According to English grammar, that sentence is technically fine. It just doesn't sound right because no English-speaking person would say that. People generally don't use pretentious wording often.

I've seen much worse. Other than someone missing the errors of that last sentence it reads alright. It's not great, it looks like the translator translated a little too literally in some parts with too many commas and the ellipsis of the third sentences but most VN translations aren't great either.
>>
>>12817422
I am so used to reading this technically-correct-but-completely-bizarrely-worded English that translators use that I honestly can't even notice it at this point. I dunno if that's sad or not.

I feel that if I read a VN that was NOT translated this way it would come off as weird.

>>
>>12817521

>>
>>12817533
They've only started getting serious about doing their own translations a year ago, so no.
>>
>>12817530
It'd be a shock if someone were to release a machine translation of a Rance game.

For the third time.
>>
>>12817539
And every single trial patch they've put out has been met with rave reviews there right up until someone who actually knows Japanese takes a look at it.

>>12817538
If nobody knows the language, can you really call it a translation? Nothing's stopping you right now from dumping the script into Google and then autocorrecting it.
>>
>>12817546
>If nobody knows the language, can you really call it a translation? Nothing's stopping you right now from dumping the script into Google and then autocorrecting it.

Do people ACTUALLY do this?

Because from my experience, Google translates Japanese into such gibberish that trying to correct that into even just mediocre-but-correct English is nearly impossible. I just can't see why someone would try to do that.
>>
>>12817566
No, but they teach themselves basic grammar and then basically use jparser, mecab, and various other resources to mechanically translate by hand rather than by their own knowledge and intuition. It's better than real machine translation but still very far from anything approaching good.
>>
>>12817566
Yes, they do. It has been done many times, not just by Cudder. Rance 01 and 02 are machine translated then edited for readability. Remember that Muv Luv AF project? It was Google Translated and then cleaned up. They were caught between a ton of mistakes and reading a number, the most basic of basic things, wildly wrong in the exact same way that Google did. It was something like 82% mistranslated as "80% in two minutes."

And Fuwanovel is a hive full of people who use machine translation 'for assistance,' despite obviously not knowing either Japanese nor English. That's like taking the first suggestion auto complete on your phone gives every time. Even Aaeru pretty obviously didn't know Japanese by the endorsements she gave to extremely bad translations (see Koiken Otome's thread) They believe that if they get any answer from machine output whatsoever that they can glean some kind of meaning from, it's the correct one, and all they need to do is clean it up. Then they show it to their Fuwabuddies who all say they're doing a Fuwagreat job because they have similar attitudes of "as long as I can read SOMETHING, it's good enough," with an extra filter of English not being the first language of most.

Thankfully, most are also lazy shitheads, so it doesn't get far, but more and more are trying in that community of shit piss.
>>
>>12817595
There have been no fuwanovel rance projects so you're mixing them up hongfire or something.
>>
>>12817589
>they teach themselves basic grammar
All evidence points to the contrary. I doubt most of them even understand that it's a null-subject language, let alone that it's topic prominent and how that affects translation.
>>
>>12817599
>people edit machine translations
>do people actually do this
>yes they do, and here are examples

Try to follow along. While practically everyone at Fuwanovel uses machine translation, because I can't imagine anybody who actually knows the language associating with and encouraging people like that, not everyone who uses machine translation is at Fuwanovel.
>>
They like to say that English isn't their first language, that's why the grammar always looks so bad.

And yet the spelling is always impeccable.
>>
>>12817612
>And yet the spelling is always impeccable.
You never heard about spellcheckers?
>>
>>12817613
Yeah. Because there are tones of .txt-based spell checkers for Japanese language games filled with stuttering, honorifics, Japanese names, and onomatopoeias.

So yet another Top Quality Release With Professional Malaysian Slave Translators By Sekai Project?
>>
Holy shit guys, I just realised Arunaru and Arudoc are not the same person.
>>
>>12817911
There were numerous posts before the Kickstarter went up (and ever since the prefundia update) on here saying that it would be a big success considering how Sekai Project's other titles have done. The main point made was that all ages only wouldn't do as well as a dual release in terms of amount, which still appears to be true.

That said though, the situation now looks to be a mess since much of the higher tier pledges are going to disappear tomorrow due to inconsistent Kickstarter rules, provided that Kickstarter doesn't accept Sekai Project's appeal.

How the heck did MG get Fata from Playism?
>>
>>12819673
Playism probably charged them actual rates for translations and MG fought back by making it as cheap as possible. They were able to pick up a fan translator for cheap and are trying to make big bucks off of fatamogana's expected fame. Makes me a bit sad because they probably could have gotten more publicity with Sekai Project. It's a shame SP never contacted them.

They did though. The Fata group went with MG because SP would have made them go through KS and it would have been a lot of work on their end. http://blog.mangagamer.org/2014/08/12/a-message-from-novectacle/

I think if Mangagamer hired multiple translators for individual projects with a head translator as project lead to go over the other translators work, VNs would be released much faster.
>>
>>12819889
That game is from the dev of Fata Morgana and so are the characters, ESL EOP.
>>
>>12819976
I know, right!
>>
>>12819958
Yeah, because there are so many translators to go around that people like YukkuriS and Trantez can't find work, so a plan needing even more translators, not to mention more skilled translators than there already are is definitely viable.
>>
>>12819958
Mangagamer isn't really slow with their translations. JAST is the slow one but it seems that their problems aren't actually related to translation.
>>
>>12820107
Well, it's related somewhat since JAST, apparently, also had bad translators which pushed back their games. Payne's problem is that he doesn't quality check until the very end when they've already wasted months.
>>
>>12820107
They very much are, in a roundabout way. Everything at Jast has to go through one guy, who does the final quality check, retranslates anything that needs retranslation, etc. That guy is very slow at his job, and the more retranslation he has to do, the slower it gets. That's why Yumina and Steins;Gate took forever. Jast doesn't really have significantly better translators than the others, but what they do have is the final guy in charge of giving the stamp of approval to things actually being an excellent translator. It does create a bottleneck though, and that guy's not an efficient or fast worker.
>>
>>12820130
That's changed a little. Now they give potential translators a test before giving them work.

Still don't check in for months though. Sumaga's scripts are a trainwreck.

So what was learned from this is Kickstarter is a hypocritical platform with inconsistently applied rules, which considered nude images to be porn. We also learned that Kickstarter won't respond before killing $70k in funding (which would have been a decent amount of change for Kickstarter itself as well once they took their cut)
>>
>>12822751
Because all those people who pledged hundreds to thousands of dollars are now not going to pledge anything at all because they won't be getting a pillow cover. That pillow cover was the difference between them committing hundreds of dollars and none at all.

I'm sure the loss will be substantial.

Dovac posted this as his response from Kickstarter

He also posted
>We will be moving to a new platform for future projects. I'm already in talks with another company to prevent this from happening again.
>>
>>12822751
Eat shit! EOP scum!
>>
>>12822699
Sekai Project BTFO.
>>
>>12822777
What other big crowdfunding sites are there that allow 18+ content? Also will the Japanese companies be fine with using a less well known crowdfunding site?
>>
>>12822820
Indiegogo I think. But no, it won't be as appealing to Japanese devs as Kickstarter.
>>
>>12822820
>>12822873

I'm guessing Dovac wants to try a big project elsewhere just to see if he can have success there out of spite for Kickstarter. I would be pissed too if I got that bullshit e-mail response that says nothing at all, especially when they didn't touch (and explicitly approved) other projects with far worse content.
>>
>>12822820
It's another empty Dovac promise/threat. Same as he promised Doki would fix everything in Clannad's fan translation. Same as when he looked for better translators for NekoPara after releasing the demo.
>>
>>12822699

On one hand, I feel that dovac has had undeserved good fortune, so it's good to see him actually have to struggle a bit. This'll probably force him to switch to his own crowdfunding site that he's been building, which will get nowhere near the traffic that kickstarter gets, forcing him to actually bite his nails on whether he can crowdfund faroff dreams forever.

On the other hand, that's some bullshit right there.
>>
The dakimakura IS explicitly against Kickstarter's terms and conditions. Not because it's pornographic, because it has nothing to do with the project that's being funded.

>Resale. All rewards must have been produced or designed by the project or one of its creators — no reselling things from elsewhere.
>>
>>12822699

I hope Doorvac uses this as a point to show frontwing why they should get over themselves about ero. 70k's a rather hefty chunk of cash to loose.
>>
>>12822916
Can't they get past that by autographing it or modifying it in some other small way?
>>
>>12822817
>>12822732
>>12822705
Yeah, that'll teach Sekai for trying to cater to an audience wanting 18+ goods! They should just stick with making everything all-ages like /jp/ has been saying all along!
>>
>>12822954
Better question would be if frontwing has official dakimakura merchandise. Would then be able to like it directly to the company behind it.
>>
>>12822954
Maybe in theory as a technicality, but then you could resell anything you wanted and the prohibition would be meaningless. They're also reselling posters, the OST, and tapestries too, so they probably really don't want KS to take a close look at things.
>>
>>12822916
However, they weren't taken down because of that, and I am guessing for Kickstarter purposes, "one of it's creators" would include the people who created the game and are financially involved with the Kickstarter.
>>
>>12822976
>>12822954
I see that on their Clannad page, every piece of merchandise has KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE attached to it. Good money is on it being existing shit, but sold through SP or something.
>>
>>12822988
Kickstarter really doesn't look that deeply into things, especially not when it requires searching foreign language sites. It's likely they simply don't know and Dovac is betting on collective ignorance.
>>
>>12822728
The way Kickstarter works is that after the kickstarter campaign ends, the pledgers' credit cards are charged if enough money is pledged to meet the goal. If it isn't met, nobody pays anything. Until the campaign ends, nobody pays anything either way.

>>12822916
Nice selective interpretation, but no. What that part means is that you can't give things you didn't make as reward. For example, I can't just buy stuff from Amiami or wherever and resell it via a Kickstarter project. Selling stuff you yourself have produced before is perfectly fine and very common.

(Not to mention the dakimakura and other goods here will likely be specifically produced (as in, created in factories, not the whole design process) for this campaign. There's been Kickstarter campaigns for simply reprinting out-of-print books, so Kickstarter is entirely okay with stuff like this.)
>>
>>12822998
You think that Sekai Project has their own manufacturing wing?
>>
>>12822961
"You can't have sex scenes but we'll toss you these scraps of nudity. You better be grateful you're getting anything, peasants!"
>>
>>12822646
It's more likely that they simply started that high. I ordered almost immediately after the announcement, and my user ID that I got suggested I was in the first few people ordering. The order number was in the range you said though. If I had to guess, I would say they started at 3350.
>>
>>12823037
>I ordered
Why would you buy this inferior version?
>>
>>12823042
For science.
>>
>>12823014
Yes, it's as big as webcomic artists's manufacturing wings. You didn't know? Everyone has one at home nowadays.
>>
>>12823134
Artists create the art for the products they send to printers or manufacturers. SP is repackaging products already being made and sold. It's not comparable at all.
>>
With cloud manufacturing anyone can have a manufacturing wing so this argument is retarded

I've been thinking about the reason why VNs aren't more mainstream in the west.

Usually, when "normal" people hear the word anime they either think about something along the lines of cartoons for children or associate the term with something pornographic. If you try to discuss anime or otaku related topics with them they simply won't take you seriously and will not only make fun but also insult you. These people hypocrisy is so big that they don't even mind and sometimes actually like intimate moments between actors on movies and partial if not full nudity on them.
Now, if this is the case with many anime, just imagine what would happen with VNs being blatantly advertised to these people.

Given this unfortunate reality, I think that the best way for people to know about VNs is to make people aware of them through anime. Even if it may be hard to convince someone to start watching anime, at this point in time it's obvious that a lot of people in the west already do it.
This would mean that anime related sites (and possibly fansubs?) could help in advertising VNs, specially those that have an anime adaptation. Unfortunately, that's something that as far as I know doesn't happen. I don't see any mentions of the anime being an adaptation of the VN in either AniDB or MAL and when I searched MAL forums about this I found that they don't have any intentions of mentioning VNs.

So this pretty much leaves us at a point where people either find a VN randomly (example: someone googles "hentai", finds a nukige and then starts to look for more) or actually look a bit more into this culture.

I personally came to find about VNs by a suggestion of a school collegue that I got along well a lot of years ago (maybe 9) and guess what, it was I'm Gonna Serve You 4. Only after years I finally got to actually read VNs

If there was a bit more of cooperation from the anime industry, I believe VNs could be more known to people who simply search for some anime to watch.
>>
>>12823248
Forgot to mention that I'm aware of ANN along with other niche sites sometimes mentioning VNs. My point is more coverage from other known anime sites.
>>
>>12823248
>example: someone googles "hentai", finds a nukige and then starts to look for more
I thought this was preposterous, but realised it's actually my case.

>>12823248

It's porn, culture shock, and ethnocentrism. If there's one thing we can't have in the West, it's The Unholy Genitalia. Especially when it comes from those 'weird Asian cartoons'.

You need a way to bring up the concept that people can fuck without having people shit themselves, which is pretty hard to do over here. Offering dual instals for ero/non-ero is a step (tsukihime/fate), but it's not an end-all solution. Personally a friend gave me an eroge, I saw sex, and got over it, playing it out of interest in the characters/story. That's a pretty unusual reaction though.
>>
>>12823248

Why would you want more normies in the VN hobby? I'm fine with having more people who appreciate the medium and can enjoy it for what it is even if it's not popular. That doesn't mean that in order to increase its popularity, I want shrieking harpies demanding things be changed because they get easily offended. You know as well I know that that's the first thing that is going to happen.
>>
>>12823310
I do not give a fuck who has the VN hobby. It's not a social activity anyway
>>
>>12822777
Like some anon said in another thread, it's probably because of Makina's dakimakura potentially being CP in certain regions, if someone were to order it and get arrested it would be traced back to Kickstarter.

>>12823248
I think most people are aware VNs exist, it's more the fact people don't want to read a VN, compared to watching an anime because of preconceived notions of action scenes being bad because it's just wordswordswords and the porn in them being forced and awkward. I think the best way to do it is to have more short sharp VNs, I know Saya was the first thing I read when it was posted here and that got me into them. I imagine stuff like Planetarian works in the same way, stuff being on Steam I imagine will help a bit, especially with stuff like Neptune coming which has a lot of VN elements. I mean look at Sakura Spirit and Go Go Nippon's sales, a lot more than just the niche of people who read VNs bought them. It's a shame those sales didn't carry over to Chou Dengeki Stryker however, I guess people just bought them because they were cheap and didn't actually read them or care about them.
>>
>>12823335
Go Go Nippon sold because weebs wanted to visit Japan for cheap. Sakura Spirit was because people bought it as a joke and wanted to leave ironic reviews.
>>
>>12823335
>and the porn in them being forced and awkward
Are you trying to argue that this isn't exactly the case?
>>
>>12823376
But it didn't sell almost at all until it was put up on Steam for less than the price of a large coffee.
>>
>>12823376
Pretty much, I imagine there was a lot of ironic gifting people them as well, "Oh my friend watched an anime once I'll buy him this as a joke" they only sold because of the price being so low. Anything sells on Steam if the price is low enough I guess, some people treat it like a TCG to collect games.

>>12823443
Completely depends on the VN to be fair, badly written H-Scenes are exactly that and blaming the H-Scenes instead of the writer is stupid, for the majority of VNs H-Scenes actually serve a purpose in the relationship status between the MC and said girl as much as you want to believe they're all have 0 meaning and could be removed.
>>
>>12823451
You mean GGN? I think that had more to do with them being one of the earliest VNs on Steam. Once more reviews for it came in, people were interested enough to try it since it was so cheap. You're right that its sales weren't really anything in the beginning.

But VNs aren't even a good method of storytelling. It's all the reading without the good writing, and all the visuals without the animation. Most VNs are created for lonely otaku who want to feel more immersed in their harems anyway.

>>
>>12824194
They can be, and there are some VNs the use sounds and visuals smartly to enhance the story but: Most are written in a Light Novel style(translates poorly) and a lot of very pandering
>>
>>12824194
I disagree. There are things that VNs can do better than any other medium, same as any medium really.

Also you gotta keep in mind that as an art form they are still very much in their infancy. I don't think we've even scraped the surface of what visual novels are capable of doing yet. Not while so many authors are still thinking of them as books with pictures and sound, or as games without gameplay. Give it another 40-50 years before you make up your mind on the medium I'd say.
>>
>>12824205
>Most are written in a Light Novel style(translates poorly)
VN writing isn't THAT bad. And they would translate perfectly fine if the people translating them were competent and not teenagers and twenty-somethings who taught themselves Japanese through watching subbed anime and maybe a year or two of college classes.

The point is that the ones doing it are so-called EOPs themselves, so they are just bad trolls who are in no position to talk and have doomed themselves to a dead-end job at best, but more likely just live off their parents. People such as >>12821146.

There are ESLs that actually learn the language properly so that nobody thinks to call them an ESL, and then there are ones like you who make it very obvious, indicated most clearly by your misunderstanding of these acronyms. An acronym is an abbreviation formed from the initial components in a phrase or a word. Usually these components are individual letters (as in NATO or laser) or parts of words or names (as in Benelux). Perhaps it would help if you focused on learning actual words instead of inconsequential shit like "rekt."

A towel, especially that price is nowhere near the value of a Daki/Bedsheet. It's tough because the $200~ tiers have already got posters and tapestries in. The only thing I could imagine is if they did SFW dakis, or could get away the restriction by giving away a redeemable token for on SP's site where they would sell the dakis or something.
