What about a piece from Marcantonio's speech?

"Ascoltatemi amici, romani, concittadini…

Tutti, tutti uomini d’onore…

Io vengo a parlarvi di Cesare morto."

>>
>>53687007
Hmm, my answer would be kind of in between those two. It's obvious that English is "the" world language, it would be pretty hard for any language to unseat it from that position any time soon (I don't think Chinese could even do that even though people like to meme about it).

However, I don't think it's just a fun autistic hobby. It definitely IS a fun autistic hobby, but not just that. For example, it has some native speakers. I'm friends with one and we chat now and then and it's simply the language that we use, not something we are specifically doing for fun. It's the strongest language that we have in common.

Personally when I first learned it it was just from boredom/curiosity, and I didn't think much of it. But now I genuinely find it to be a pretty language, equal to natural languages, and I have seen that the concept of a constructed interlanguage is actually very useful. People get turned off by the idea of a "fake" language but to me that seems silly, now. Esperanto is not a perfect interlanguage but I think it demonstrates that the concept works well and could be improved upon.

>>
>>53687739
>since it hasn't worked very well so far

What do you mean by that though? Do you mean because it hasn't been adopted by any big international organizations? Just curious.

IMO it works great, but I'm not assigning any big tasks to it. I use it to chat with people all over the world, and it works great for that. I feel it works better than English because alot of people learn English from obligation, meanwhile alot of people learn Esperanto because they like international stuff and want to talk about it and visit people. And I really think that the concept of it being a second language for (almost) everybody who learns it is actually nice, too. I like that not everyone is trying to speak my language in those contexts. Personal taste, I guess.

Pic is a convo I saved as an example of the kind of stuff that happens in the community. Someone needed a cheap hotel in Abuja, Nigeria and to find teh Ukranian embassy so they asked if any Esperantists there could help, over the course of a day or so someone hooked them up with some directions to a hotel and someone who was willing to call them and guide them when they got there. I'm sure you can do that in English too but it feels a little more cozy this way, I dunno.

>that could happen in any group
Well, that's fair enough I guess.

Also, just because I think it's interesting (I don't really have good ways of verifying this), from paying attention to different groups and stuff, it seems that Esperanto has, at the absolute least, 20,000 speakers. I really doubt that it is that low, however. Really, it's probably more like 30,000. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if it had around 100,000. Not a major language but it fits in with minority indigenous languages, which to me feels pretty cool, and it has the benifit of alot of learning resources, and lots of young enthusiastic people, which most languages in that size group are lacking.

Also, it seems to me that the amount of Esperanto speakers is increasing. I have spoken it for about ~11 years now, and while alot of it could just be that people are getting more connected thanks to internet, I feel like there's alot of new people learning it now, more than when I was younger. Regardless of that though the online community is becoming more lively and fun imo.

Yeah me too. I don't know why that number keeps getting thrown around, to me that's an embarassment. The maximum that I could imagine is 300,000, similar to Icelandic. That's the max. I think between 30,000-50,000 is more like the actual amount. 2 million makes no sense.

>sure, but not rapidly enough for it to become an actually relevant language
Well, it's relevant to me, so that's okay :)

Yeah, people who try to insist that it will be are pretty cringey. But I don't think it's impossible, personally. Just not very easy/likely. I like it for what it is right now. It's cozy and feels like a family. If it gets bigger that will be cool, but for now I am happy with the amount of people it has. I like to encourage people to learn it only because it feels like I'm inviting them to a party. It's fine if they don't wanna.

You pronounce "ш" as "щ". "ши" should be pronounced as "шы". As not "вихoдилa", but "выхoдилa". "ы" should sounds like english short "i".
And you pronounce many other things as it wrote, but it should sound other way. I think there are rules for foreigners that explains when the pronouncing should be different. "тoгo" should be pronounced as "тaвo". "cизoгo" should be pronounced as "cизaвa", etc.
But you don't sound like a person with "stereotipical accent". Like, even slavs have stereotipical accents and you don't. So, you are good.

When i went there as a kid the locals used to take me with them to the pier or even on the boats to teach me how to fish because they knew I was really interested in it.

We never asked, they just saw me trying and failing on my own. They'd take me out pretty much all day and then invite me back to their houses for lunch/ dinner. Incredibly friendly people.
