In this thread we take popular proverbs or sayings from our own language and try to translate it to English.

I'll start with a couple of Finnish ones:

>"Kyllä routa porsaan kotiin ajaa"
"Yes the frozen ground will drive the pig home"

>"Kauhistuksen kanahäkki"
"Chicken cage of terror"

>"Oishan sitä vintillä leipää, mutta lapset söi rappuset."
"There is bread in the attic but the children ate the stairs"

More:
>It doesn't help to cry at the market

means that something is fishy

stems from the belief that murdered children that were put in the moss (swamp) would turn into owls

Lol we have similar one. But with a sheep instead of a calf
>>
>>53266873
>"Jun jogi aye pani kanai chireko"
Whichever hermit may come, the ear is slashed.
>>

Now I finally understand 'to go whistle to the crabs' (= to die). People were more in tune with nature's rhythm back then.

We say "to find where the dog is buried", means to get to the core of something (like of a problem or what started some event)

"If there is heartroom, there is assroom."

lit. "take in for king and fostercountry", with "take in" meaning to gather (and use) a large amount of physical force and "fostercountry" being our most common term for father/motherland. As such, the expression means to use all the strength you have.
