So while I have been living in the UK for the past 2 years, I'm currently on a guest-researcher visit in the US. Things are pretty great here. Gotta love that big, empty country. Even the highly urbanised areas have their charm. The US has something for everyone.

The main thing that keeps me off looking for a job here after my current contract ends is issues with social security. People here have emergency funds and a very different approach to bookkeeping / saving. If you happen to lose your job for whatever reason, and you don't have some money stashed away - you are royally fucked. Every single matter, that in the UK or Europe is usually taken care of social security / NHS etc., is up to you to figure out. And if you happen to forget about whatever aspect of life, you might be fucked as well in the event of an outstanding circumstance.

So yeah, life's great here - but it requires a somewhat significant change in mentality.

I still have an offer from Utrecht and another one from Hamburg lying around, let's see..

Utah, Oregon, Washington, New Hampshire (if you're determined for the East Coast) are the best in my opinion. There's really no wrong answer. Some states are more expensive, others are significantly less. Some have more shitskins; others have less.

I lived in South Carolina which is almost majority black - if it isn't actually majority black - and it was okay. Cost of living is super cheap, and you don't see black people unless you hang out in crappy neighborhoods. Plus those white southern belles are nice and friendly.

I live in WA now, and I'd recommend it. If I were picking clean, I'd go to Utah. You'd probably have fun in a place like Idaho.
