mathematics, actually. I also took a history course and had a class that was aimed at teaching young adults who already speak Russian how to read and write at a university level. Usually foreign born students have to pass the national Russian as a second language exam (I forget what it's called) in order to take classes, but they let all of us go ahead and start. You guys who grow up reading and writing it are so lucky cause you have longer to learn all the rules, the o/a and e/и spelling drills were rough.

It's true. Syntax can be very fluid but a specific word order might make a sentence sound silly.
>>
>>51176330
the same way most other indoeuropean langauges structure sentences, only since verbs are marked for person/sometimes gender and nouns are marked for case (part of speech) you can leave out lots of words in colloquial russian. Word order is also a bit more fluid but there are still orderings that sound more natural than others depending on the context.

Nothing beats Finnish though, you can mix up the order of words in any sentence and everyone will still know what you mean

So the order of the words doesn't matter that much, only in specific contexts?

I wanted to get some kind of a translation jon since but I struggled to freelance in this sphere since without a specific linguistic degree chances to get a job drastically dimish. For this reason I wanted to get a master's degree.

Sorry, I automatically wrote this in English.

in russian you don't need specific order of words to be able to understand how words are connected to each other, and if it unclear is then there is punctuation which we use quiet a lot compared to english language.

idk. i'm living with a host family for 5 weeks and i really don't know what to expect. should i get them gifts or something?

what are you going to study? If you don't already you should learn as much russian as you can. Getting around with English is hard.

Getting by is pretty easy, I never had any trouble with anyone that wasn't caused by my drunk faggot friends getting me involved in fights on the street. I know nothing about volgograd but I'd imagine it's not much different than any medium sized russian city.

>>51176643
host family experiences can be great. They probably won't expect gifts but some american snacks or candies would be a nice gesture.

That's not an issue at all. Programming is not math or physics, it's not "complex" but "broad". Basic scripting is very easy to start.

Also your linguistics degree could lead you to some cool linguistics-related fields of programming (think search systems).

Anyway, you could try some day if there would be no luck with your job search. I really wish you well, that's why I'm insisting, sorry for being pushy.

Good night and good luck!

my english is pretty shitty, so I don't think I will be able to explain how it actually works.

there is still 'default' direct order of words which people use most of the time. usually people use different orded of words to stress something out in a sentence.

I just tried to google translate some of my own comments and noticed that there might be something fucked with the encoding, because it tries to parse russian s (c) as english c, as well as a few other similar characters. That might explain why you saw gibberish. If you don't have that problem, then I can tell you that Russian to English translation isn't so great because the bulk of machine translation work has been done so far on languages that have plenty of annotated data available AND are closer to English like Spanish, French, and German as its easier to parse their syntax and train models on the good dual corpora that exist for them.

I hate winter but at least with sub freezing temperatures and snow there you can do some fun winter shit, but if it's just straddling the line between being cold and "winter"... idk I think that's far worse than winter itself. It's like a shitty limbo between summer and winter

нe oчeнь cкopo.

I honestly don't know the words to discuss this in Russian, but basically there are two aspects to machine translation: adequacy and fluency. Adequacy is when the meaning of the source is represented in the target language, fluency is when it actually looks like something a native speaker would produce. The first one is somewhat doable now provided there's enough data to map words and phrases from the source language to the target, although the results aren't always very pretty or grammatical. The second is incredibly hard and we'll be relying on humans for high quality translations for a little while to come. Most work in machine translation is done using statistical models, though, so theoretically if there's enough info for the algorithms to learn from they could eventually start to produce pretty damn near human speech in most situations.

That's not correct. They suck in programming that involves math - like graphic systems or AI.

I was ok with math but I forgot literally all of my university course because most of the modern code is written for sites, apps, games and other simple things.

Poor asian guys with school-only education write code. It's bad sometimes but well, they still can do it.

Programming is 90% organization and like 10% algorithms and other "scientific" stuff.
