you're right about that, my closest beach is Aveiro, and I don't even bother entering the water, it's because we're exposed to the ocean quite a lot, for example northern spanish coast, and western spain form a sort of bay, that's why it's slightly warmer there. South coast is pleasant enough for more than 5 minutes swim though.

How widespread is the practice of bathing in ice cold water in winter?

I was watching a documentary on Norway the other day and they showed people doing it. It also seems common in Finland where the run out of hot saunas and immediately dip themselves in frozen lakes.

I guess it depends on what kind of person you are. In my local town (i'm not the same anon btw) there are always people bathing in the winter, just for the lulz, but most people won't do that obviously.

its typically something done once around christmas/new year.

for instance, we're a bunch of people from a small part of a small town who make a point out of taking an ice bath on new years eve to end the swimming/bathing season, and then again the next day to open it.

The closest beach I go to, by the way, sea on this side, delta of Vouga river oh the other side. It's always windy, and chilly though. It's not unusual to live my hometwn with 33ºC(it's 100km away from the coast) and arriving to the beach to find it at 20/22ºC

I have been on pic related, it was fucking awesome, got some pretty bad sun burns. And most of the tima i wasnt in the poroper beach, i was exploring around, much life, and some times some penguins apeared there. I have been in some other beaches you can see in this link, i am not really in to beach, i live in rio and never went to beach desu, but those were focking awesome
