Molenbeek was ruled by a socialist mayor (Moureaux) who let tons of Muslims do whatever they wanted, because they voted for him.
A dude got shot in the back one day, and this mayor shrugged it off as an anecdote.
Lots of areas in Brussels have similar Muslim problems (Anderlecht, Sint-Joost, ..), and other Belgian cities too (Borgerhout in Antwerp), ...

From a more general point of view: Brussels used to be a majority Flemish city when my grandparents were young, but tons of Muslims from North Africa were brought in because they spoke French, to help turn Brussels into a French-speaking city.
