There is literally no point in owning a manual if you purchase a modern car

The fuel efficiency is on par, if not better, in a modern automatic. I would have said otherwise in the 90's, but with computers etc there's no beating a good auto.

I unironically don't... I know D is drive and R is reverse. N has to be neutral, but I don't know what S is. I also don't know why some automatic gearboxes have a 1 and 2 option.. Is that for start-stop traffic or something?

Something tells me it's more practical to not know how to drive an automatic than to not be able to drive a standard though.. Considering the learning curve and all.

You say this.. But I read somewhere that American drivers increasingly use 2 feet. Some apparantly actually have their left foot on the brake at all times, which might cause the brake light to light up even when they're not braking... And apparantly people that panic sometimes stomp down both feet, which usually means the brakes lose, or at least lengthen the stopping distance significantly.

It took all of five seconds to figure out how to drive automatic, but it felt absolutely disgusting. You have so much less control over the vehicle. Also I looked like a fool for trying to use the clutch out of habit to roll the last few meters when I reached my destination.
