If you have a mortgage you have to pay interest to the bank, plus all the other hidden costs associated with owning. property tax, council rates, transaction fees, capital gains (when you buy and sell the house). Plus if you have to put down a deposit, say 10-20% then you have the opportunity cost of not investing that chunk of change in the market instead.

If you rent you don't have to pay any of that stuff, so you take the cash you saved and invest it in stocks or whatever.

Well that city is like 800 years old so i would not call it a normal city, but you are right and i guess that inmany parts of the old world it must be the same. But Sub-urbs are not a thing in Australia? In chile they are really extended, Santiago is different since it's really a bunch of communities that grew so much they clahsed and fused.

Yeah suburbs are a big thing here, you usually don't build the houses yourself out of scrap though. Suburbs sprawl for ages here in Melbourne, at least 60km from the city centre. It's more like American suburbs though, with a housing estates and such.
