I think the 'ideal' number is not really that easy to pin down; it depends on a host of factors about what is going on in society. There was a time when a couple having 6-8 childer would have been required for them to have a generally good passing their genetics.

In some places today, there is a higher mortality rate than elsewhere, as there shall always be. Birthrates should reflect that.
