But this isn't even a loosely affiliated network, some dopehead puts up that video and suddenly "anonymous is at war with ISIS", people join in because why not, some twitter accounts are brute-forced -> "anonymous did it".

There's nothing to join or be a part of.

Dude, there's been whole books written on this shit. Cyber recruitment. e-jihad stuff.

They don't actually recruit through the internet itself, what they do is they set up websites that are fairly ordinary, albeit pro-whatever group and curious bodies arrange some kind of correspondence. And yes, young people have been caught for trying to leave the country to fight in wars in the MENA before.

They also have groups of hackers who attack other Muslim websites. ISIS and Al-Qaeda aren't mostly poor shepherds and dirt farmers who can't read, they usually get their recruits from middle and upper class engineering backgrounds and shit. Bin Laden was a perfect example.

There was a book I saw in the library once called "Mullahs on the Mainframe," wasn't about terrorist cells but was supposed to be about Ismailis and their use of modern tech to connect their communities together, which probably would give some idea of how most muslims adapt to it.
