Because it doesn't follow any logic at all, the army is also like a micro version of Greece.
You have the guy who has connections getting a better position or a better transfer even if he's not suited for it or deserves it and that makes everyone else suffer, you train to handle pre-vietnam era equipment even though we spend 2% of our budget for defense (most of it probably goes to politicians' and arm dealers' pockets), 70% of the time spent in army is you doing useless shit that is intended to keep you busy.

I would do it again if I could though, was the best fun of my life.
And I did a year because I joined in 2007, not 9 months.

You do, but it's mostly useless.
Besides basic training you get a specialty that is usually training on some archaic weapon or system.
For example I was in artillery handling a Rheinmetall 20mm anti aircraft cannon.
It was all good and stuff, I got to shoot stuff with it but I'm not really sure it would be used in case of actual warfare.
That's why I say it's useless.
Another guy was trained on Stinger missile system and he never got to shoot anything.
He was just aiming at a wall running simulations.
