I work with some Scandinavian m, Russian and other eastern euros and what is the deal with you guys never smiling in the corridor or at the gym? I lived a small while on the east coast at a murrican friends place, and pretty much every clerk etc. had a smile on 95% of the time, and according to my local friend (who had worked at 7-11 and a golf course and other such jobs) if you don't smile constantly you'll very likely be let off and they'll just hire someone who does smile constantly. As someone who also lives on the east coast I can agree that is more of a corporate thing. In most malls and things like that people don't smile except when you first step up and say hello. However in smaller stores people are usually under pressure to make the customer feel welcome for repeat business. What most of us are talking about in this thread is that first initial smile when you say hello, that isn't fake it's just trying to be nice. Same with laughing at shitty jokes, but that happens to a lesser degree.

I don't think i ever saw a toothy smile that was genuine.
Even at their most happy, people tend to at most display the upper row of teeth and not the lower.
