Why was the UK so much more successful than every other European country?

Was it for superior cultural, intelligence or leadership reasons? Maybe a combination of these things or something else

Probably due to our relative stability compared to the rest of Europe.

Our last civil war finished in 1651. The last pitched battle on British soil (Culloden) was in 1746. We have a more stable society than any other medium-large country.

You're right, it is the island nations of the world that are the most successful. I feel lucky to be among the ranks of the world's greatest and high achieving countries such as Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Cuba and Jamaica

Truly it is an honour to be in their company.
>>
1. Industrial revolution (in 1840, Paris reached the wealth that London had in 1790)
2. Island nations usually have an advantage since 95% of the time they only need to maintain a navy
3. Anti-Catholicism allowed literacy to flourish. The common man could now read the bible in his own language, without clergymen having exclusive rights to its interpretation(in 1860 85% of GB was literate, compared to only 1/5th in Catholic Spain)
4. Adopting a "middle-course" for the disorganized Celtic peoples, they were able to break and subdue them (Wales and Ireland militarily, Scotland financially), and bring them into the fold without pursuing a costly annihilation of them

>2. Island nations usually have an advantage since 95% of the time they only need to maintain a navy

Yeah but the navy has to be really good. In the major wars we typically fight several navies at the same time.

American Revolutionary War
>French, Spanish, Dutch navies

Seven Years War
>French, Spanish, Russian

Napoleonic
>French, Spanish, whoever else Napoleon conquered..

WW2
>German, Italian, Japanese

It's dangerous because if the navy is defeated, England is extremely easy to conquer. Richest part is the south east and it's all flat with a few hills. In fact before Britain unified into the UK, all of our neighbours had invaded us at some point (because it's so easy once you've landed)

You can create money out of nothing in City. Nothing much else. You'd better hope that the incredible retard called Corbyn will never come to power.
>>
You had decades of free market capitalism and small government during the Margaret Thatcher years.
>>
>>51073033
And again now.

Our new Conservative government is more Thatcherite than Thatcher. The state gets smaller every year.
>>
>>51073172
Not at all. It is true the English government is the smallest and most free market oriented compared to the rest of Europe, but compared to countries like the US, Hong Kong and Thatcher's administration, it is big government. Thatcher would never impose those laws against the porn websites. Cameron did privatized a lot of failed institutions such as the postal office and is now planning on privatizing the NHS, although the English taxes are still very high, much higher than under Thatcher. In fact, you completely taxed your industrial base out of existence. You are not producing anything anymore, most industries left because of the taxes and regulations, the only sector which keeps your economy going is the banking sector, by that is not a solid base from an economic point of view. Growth comes from production not consumption, you need to produce stuff, the banking sector is just flow and exchange of money and currencies, speculations on the market, not producing anything. I think Cameron is a smart guy, he understand that if he attempts to do something ''radical'' by today's standards, the lefties are going to sack him out of office, so he acts slowly and carefully.
>>
>>51073668
Sorry but you clearly have no idea about the UK

The banking sector has been shrinking, while other parts of the economy grow. Corporation tax is at historic lows and going lower. We have more industry than you realise and we certainly are producing things, for example the UK has the 2nd largest aerospace sector in the world.

Did you know that financial services are 8% of the UK economy? So what do you think the other 92% is?

Production is only 14% of your economy. That is literally nothing. Agriculture: 0.6% Services: 80%. The aerospace industry is good, but you can't rely only on one single industry to keep your production sector. Your industrial base is long gone, just like the American one, it got taxed and regulated out of existence. The American industrial base began to disappear in the 60% when all Japan took over all the manufacturing jobs while the American companies were trying to escape taxes. Same thing happened in England. I wonder how many of your aerospace manufacturing is actually done in England? I bet at least half of it is done overseas. Your corporate tax is 20% flat, but your income personal can reach up to 50%, plus you have the VAT and Payroll tax, as well as tons of regulations. I've read stories of people trying to set their startup in England but they give up out of frustration of the regulations and eventually move to another country. Your minimum wage alone is a vicious job killer, no low paying manufacturing can stay competitive with that minimum wage law.
>>
>>51057594
Literally because they were on an island.

Same thing happened to Japan

Are you thick or something m8? Where did I say aerospace was the only UK industry?

Yes most of our economy is services, can you explain why that is a bad thing? You know finance is only a tiny part of the service sector right? Creative industries (which is filed under "service sector") is a whole 5% of the UK economy. This is high-value economic activity.

You know an economy which is mostly production? China. Do you know what they're trying to? Transition to a service-based economy as soon as possible. The reason why is that everyone wants a high-value added economy. Only /int/ retards think basic manufacturing is better than high-value service jobs.

You're a fucking idiot. Our minimum wage is a "vicious job killer" is it? Is that why we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in Europe, and on par with the US?

Here you can see the "vicious job killer" that is the UK economy. In fact last year the UK created more jobs than the rest of EU put together.

One last thing
>I wonder how many of your aerospace manufacturing is actually done in England? I bet at least half of it is done overseas.

Firstly, this statement shows how stupid you are, because if it was done overseas it wouldn't be counted in the UK's manufacturing statistics, would it?

Secondly, much of the UK's manufacturing is high-value products like jet engines, warships and satellites. Google for companies like Inmarsat, Rolls-Royce, BAE. You might learn something more useful than the tired memes which constitute the sum total of your knowledge
>>
>>51075353
It's bad because wealth does not come from consumption, it comes from production. You need to first produce something in order to consume it or exchange/trade it. People that produce stuff, create stuff, those are the people that create wealth. China is artificially keeping its currency low in order to boost their export, but what they are trying to do now is to switch to a freely convertable currency, and when they do that, their money will have more value, they will be able to consume what they produce, their production is not going to go away anytime soon, the will simply be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Obviously their services will increase, but that is not their goal, they goal is to keep their production going while increasing the value of their currency. They want free market, not service based economy.

Just because you have low unemployment rate does not disprove what i said. It is the purchasing power that matters, i know i a lot of English people that struggle to make the ends meet even though they both work, their salaries are low compared to the cost of living, all this is because the labor costs are too high, it is too difficult to fire someone, and therefore it is difficult to hire someone, and your taxes makes it difficult to save and invest, and the regulations makes it difficult to invest the little that you've saved. Production is created only through saving and investment, and you make both of these difficult.
>>
>>51057594
Intelligence
>>
>>51075602
I never cited any manufacturing statistics, did i?

Yes, high value production, because you taxed the rest out of existence. Manufacturing is cheap, you can't stay competitive with these high taxes and minimum wage. Low paying manufacturing jobs could be taken by English people as an entry level jobs, instead they are overseas, and not the low skilled English people have difficulty finding entry level jobs to gain experience and skills on the job, that's why they all try to get into college and get a worthless degree which they can later use to get a job at McDonalds, those who fail to get to College usually either use the welfare benefits or work some minimum wage job and struggle to make the ends meet.
