Best tend to be in wealthier states with soft weather, places like California, Colorado, etc

Worst are in poorer or less populated places with harsh winters obviously, North Dakota, Maine, etc

Arkansas has noticeably horrendous roads, not sure why exactly. I have been there and they are just awful, I also remember my dad, who's a truck driver and knows all the roads nation-wide, saying they were so bad in Arkansas that he refused to vote for Bill Clinton because the man clearly couldn't run shit. >>51029855
why would you tunnel under it tho

>>
>>51030642

It does if you're not in rush hour traffic. 100 rather low for such a wide stretch of road..
>>
>>51030646
Tunnelling under it looks like it'd be a lot cheaper than some elaborate bridge.
>>
>>51028557

Probably mopeds and scooters too, but essentially it's a bike path, yeah.

>>51030703

Tunneling is less than optimal in many parts of the Netherlands.. If you dig a few feet in this country you hit water, need to drain more, gotta make sure your tunnel segments don't float up, the settlement of the soil etc. A bridge is probably less intensive, especially because it's a light bridge that doesn't have to bear automobiles and such.
>>
>>51030871
Forgot you're 20,000 leagues under the sea desu

Also with tunnelling you have to plan in advance desu
>>
>>51029789
>shitty aerodynamics increasing fuel consumption
Double-deckers are for moving masses of people around a comparatively small space. Aerodynamics aren't much of a concern compared to stop-start traffic with eighty, ninety people on board.

As for height restrictions: generally there's a guaranteed overhead clearance for road-going vehicles (can't build bridges below X height), which you can plan a bus route around anyway.
>>
>>51031223
>(can't build bridges below X height)

Some architects in the US intentionally designed bridges that were too low to let through buses, thus blocking the black and poor people from the nice parts of the city.. When laws against flat out discrimination became law, they literally used the architecture to segregate people.
>>
>>51031322
absolutely disgusting
what a shithole of a country if that's true
>>
>>51031322
Huh.

Actually, I tell a lie: on UK roads there's a definite maximum permissible length (depending on the construction of the vehicle), but not height ('general guidance is 4.95m', anything taller than 3m has to have the height displayed in the cab)

It's gone 10PM on a Friday and I've dug my FTA handbook to lecture strangers about road vehicle construction regs on the Internet. Look what you did to me, int.

http://www.yalelawjournal.org/article/architectural-exclusion

>The built environment is characterized by man-made physical features that make it difficult for certain individuals—often poor people and people of color—to access certain places. Bridges were designed to be so low that buses could not pass under them in order to prevent people of color from accessing a public beach. Walls, fences, and highways separate historically white neighborhoods from historically black ones. Wealthy communities have declined to be served by public transit so as to make it difficult for individuals from poorer areas to access their neighborhoods.

If you keep out the bus, you keep out the poor people.

Well, it is pretty modern.. The Haarlemmermeerpolder is only about 150 years old. Before that it was a lake.

>>51033228
The problem in France is that every driver thinks :
1) He is Aryton Cena
2) He can drive 20 km/h above the limit because he "knows how to deal with it"
3) He is alone
4) He is more important than others

The third part is what causes chaotic traffic, people don't understand that if everyone waits for his turn it will produce more efficient trafic for everyone
>>
>>51033228
Depends. Most cities have their specificities.

Paris is entirely gridlocked all the time and if you spend more than a second to start after a red light you are as good as dead, Lyon has chaotic highways and rings around it but has outstanding traffic otherwise, Marseille has shitty and dangerous drivers. The city I'm in currently in (Grenoble) could been summed up as "you'll get faster by foot anyway".
>>
>>51033358

On a clear day, it's common for people to go 75-85mph in areas posted 65. As long as you're moving with the flow of traffic and otherwise driving safely, cops usually won't get on you for it.
Trying to pass above those speeds, though, they'll nail you for that.
>>
>>51033358
>The problem in France is that every driver thinks:
>1) He is Aryton Cena
They crash into walls?
>people don't understand that if everyone waits for his turn it will produce more efficient trafic for everyone
I think that one probably happens everywhere on Earth, though. The favourite for lots of people here is to race through traffic as fast as you can so that you can stop at the red light 100 metres up the road with everybody you just passed anyway. Then they try to speed off to get away from traffic and get stopped at another red light a few hundred metres down the road again.
>>51033389

>>
>>51032536
Because it's standardized across all our other roads, including smaller local-highway ones that might have two lanes each way and no divider, or one traffic lane each way sharing a central turn/merge lane. On such roads, the yellow line is the hard split.
On long two-lane stretches, the yellow line also indicates which direction can pass; a double yellow means no passing, a dashed yellow means either can pass if safe, and a solid yellow alongside a dashed means that only the lane on the dashed side may pass.

Additionally, the close white dashes indicate an exit or merge lane that will end or diverge soon.
