But it's not surprising, Welsh is very much an oral language first and a written language second. Not to say its non-existant on paper, not at all, since there's a lot of Welsh poetry, literature, etc. It's just a lot more fluid and easy to speak than to write. I can speak for hours in Welsh but thinking of the right word to write or getting the grammar correct when typing in the language is a bit difficult, for me anyway.

I'd actually estimate up to a million people could speak Irish proficiently.
