I have the same question as the OP, but I'm from the UK. How different in the US from the UK?

What I see on tv shows are house parties, large houses, people visiting others from door to door, a lot of independence, people knowing each other from childhood into adulthood.

Not really outside of some areas. Even if people have prejudice they'll still work alongside you and do business with you. It's just they probably wouldn't want you marrying their daughter. More racist ones just don't want to live near other races. However, no one is going to beat you up or ban you from somewhere just because your brown. Some rural people might be weirdly interested too.

That's only true if you live in a small town. I live in a larger city and I don't care to meet my neighbors at all. There's a big sense of freedom and owning your space because everything is so stretched out. Depending on where you live you could be a 20 minute drive between strip malls and grocery outlets with a tiny square mile of 'town' or in a more dense urban setting.

I've spent time in Scotland so that's all I have to compare against. The sense of how people treat strangers is different as is our drinking/drugs culture. I can go on but I'm rambling more than anything.
