they say practice makes perfect for a reason. if i had to guess, i'd say it's just a matter of drawing as much as you can, learn what you can when you can, and put yourself out there. he probably made a lot of mistakes in the beginning; but i bet that as time went on, he saw work that was better than his, noticed what they were doing that he wasn't, and refined his work to achieve greater heights.
