Hello! I worked on this a lot today. As you can probably tell, I'm not experienced with backgrounds at all, but I'm trying to improve! May I have some pointers on what to work on?

Honestly, I feel like that's what's holding you back. You have two type of artists. Type A does too much personal work and not enough studies and therefore doesn't improve as much. Type B does too much studies and doesn't do enough personal work( me) and as a result doesn't improve that much. It's important to maintain a healthy balance between studies and finished work.

well, considering all the advice i've gotten on here longer than 'kill yourself' has been helpfull in some way, i'll take this to heart and try my hand at some studies, tho i can't gaurantee a radical shift in my comic style, since that looks pretty close to how i want it to, it might help in some way so who knows

I thought I'd use CTRL PAINT to get started but since I'm using Clip Studio this might not be the smartest thing to do as I noticed they're using Photoshop.
I'm the sort of person who works best when handheld sadly and would love some sort of digital roadway to get me into digital. Any ideas please?

Krenz and 0033 has examples. Krenz especially because he's so precise for whatever reason despite being a painter. 0033 just has hundreds of views for you to see. If you mean really complex poses like 3, 4, 5 pt. perspective, you just need to watch your VPs.

Man I wish I could give you good advice, but I'm struggling with it myself. What I've been doing though is trying to analyze Loomis, not just copy his drawings, like I'm pretty sure you need really solid head construction understanding to be able to develop a style of your own, obviously you can take inspiration from other artists which means yeah copy their drawings, but also apply what you studied from Loomis. Also read Masseti's force human anatomy it's a pretty good book.

How do people practice drawing heads/eyes in more alt/anime style? I see so many people just bang them out like nothing but to me it is completely alien. Like how do you practice this shit? There's no real teacher on it like actual figure drawing, so that's why I'm completely lost.

Copy them until you get the feel for them and then try to replicate it from memory. Repeat until good. Then maybe find specific eyes you like. People who bang them out like nothing have it in them as muscle memory or they have a good memory of eyes. For future reference though, if you want to practice anything in art, you copy it, a lot.

Hairline is extremely low. Everything is really flat. Learn the planes of the face and neck anatomy

You should probably focus on values and edge control. There's too little contrast in the skin and too much in the hair. This can be a stylistic choice, but the way you've done it isn't successful as it looks flat and unbalanced. It's also pretty boring and flat looking overall, I'd suggest looking at some artists that are known for portraits of pretty girls and study what they do to create interest and appeal from piece to piece. Do spend some more time with Loomis' drawing the head book as well.

It's because you're likely forcing something that might not work for you. The one thing I've learned is that formulas and strict guidelines in the drawing are good to introduce concepts but they won't solve the problem completely for you. "Focused drawings" don't do jack shit until you actually apply them- When you apply them you will learn what needs to be perfect and what doesn't need to be in order to get a good result. Don't do this and you'll end up like Nosebro or worse, one of those Dunning Kruger Loomis /beg/gars who have simply replaced their old symbols with new ones.
TL;DR Doodles are more instinctual than forced studies so they end up having more appeal naturally. Figure out how you draw when you doodle and study high skilled pros who draw like that. Eg: Someone whose drawn lots of comics and anime with flat shapes and silhouettes when they were young would probably prefer to draw with shapes like animators and comic artists.

the main problem isn't the torso's length, it's the hips- they're very small compared to the rest of the body and that's making everything look wonky. both figures have this problem, but it's more obvious on the right because of his pose. When you fill them out a bit it looks much more natural.

I think it'd be a good idea to try the pose you're drawing. There are some things off about that hand- mostly in how the remaining digits don't curl up and if the finger is supposed to be pushing against the face, there isn't any weight being shown in your drawing.
