I drew this side view yesterday and I reworked it today
what do you think?
>>
>>3129889
You're getting closer but it's through trial and error, not necessarily because you're feeling the underlying shapes. You need to be using guides.

Seriously use some Loomis guidelines or Reilly method or some system to break down the head shapes and build it up from there. You'll understand more than you do right now because you'll be drawing the whole head not a handful of scattered features that are only correctly placed through happy accident, not your growing knowledge
>>
>>3129896
I know about the guidelines but I didn't use them for this drawing instead I surrounded the head of the model in a box and took measurements
it's like using the viewfinder in some of Betty Edward's exercises in Drawing on the right side of the brain but instead of a physical viewfinder I use a layer
>>
>>3129901
That's great but what you've got right now looks flat, even on features that are placed correctly. As long as you're ignoring the shapes that go under them you're going to have that surface-style flatness where you're just seeking arbitrary lines rather than an understanding of how a head turns and is constructed.
>>
>>3129906
I understand now
I used to draw using guidelines before I knew about the fundamentals so I'm starting all over again
thanks for the help

Would it be bad if I try to unlearn symbol drawing by drawing things other than the picasso painting upside down? I have been copying ingame screenshots of my husbando and inverting them, and drawing them from there. It feels sorta like Im tracing, and I cant tell if its actuallu helping. Should I just draw the picasso over and over?

Also, is it bad to use line paper to draw? I feel like Im gonna develop a bad habit of using the lines as reference that I wouldnt get on a blank canvas.

Thank you for listening to the guys who directed you to /beg/. I have no idea what this creature is but I'll try anyway. I tried a slight change to make it look more like an egg (the hair could appear more attached to the head rather than planted on it, its clothes should follow its egg-shape more closely) but it may benefit from harder changes (its hairs for example could go straitght in front of him like a rocker). Also where are his feets? It really depends on what you want it to look like and evoke though.

Is this a fucking neme? Or for people who are starting from stick figures or something? I do about two hours a day. An hour before work and an hour and change after. I am making all kinds of gains with very careful observation and honing in on my mistakes consciously. I don't know if it's fair to say because Im a drew-as-a-kid and then through high school person, and my mother was a cartoonist so maybe Im a ''''talent'''' fag--definitely not starting from nothing, but man this sounds like a good way to discourage people from trying. You can learn a lot in an hour if you practice the right way. if you are complete beginner do not feel like you need to start more than hour a day or so. Noob gains like in weightlifting can be made quickly with the right practice. And burnout can happen subtly to the point you dont realize it has. your progress will suffer as a result. Its not all about sheer hours put in.

My goal for this one was just to finish a drawing. This is as finished as I know how to make it.

I think my anatomy is at a point where I just need to keep doing more and it'll resolve itself over time. The head is a bit small though, I feel like. Maybe I could learn a bit more about rendering, but I wouldn't know where to look.

Is that on the right supposed to be her elbow? It goes way lower senpai. Elbow normally almost aligns with belly-button, but if she is lowering that shoulder a lot.. then it's impossible for it to end before her rib-cage. Also, resize your files.
>>
>>3130505
This. I am good enough at eyeballing that Loomis' method was just too involved and convoluted with those discs and whatnot. I mainly learned from Hamm and some other sources. I think Hamm is vastly underlooked in favor of Loomis. Hamms figure drawing book is very good and less bloated than Loomis.

Can somebody direct me some good digital painting tutorials? I've been reading some good books on colour theory, but while I've managed to get *some* grasp on the theory, I'm shit on the practice.

Most videos online skip a shitload of steps, and turn 3 hour work into some 15 minute video. Aaron Blaise has a (IMO) fenomenal playlist, but his works deal almost exclusively with animals, and I also want to be able to paint some other tecniques and subjects.

I'm also new to /ic/, so I couldn't find a good source on this. Hopefully some kind soul can help me. Pic related is something I made a while back, for reference.

It's not a meme though. It's legit shit that happens if you take art classes. You can be a hobbyist and not spend that much time and still eventually be good. Just don't complain that you're not improving as much as someone who's spending more time.

Think the main issues that I see is that you didn't do gestures properly before jumping into construction. These figures are stiff as hell because you didn't identify any major curves in the action, not to mention some of them looking like they're about to tip over. I say go back a step and instead of trying to construct each body part do a series of little gestures like this.
>>

>>
>>3131861
I guess if you're desperate I'm here.

Your torsos are all disproportionately long, just be aware of that fix it.
You're going in and adding detail on figures you seem you barely had time to finish, or in some cases didn't.
I suggest drawing through the figures, by which I mean draw the continuation of the leg THROUGH the body, don't just draw what you see but the entire limb even if it's blocked from view.
If you use those curvs on the body to try and find form while drawing I suggest drawing through on those as well, draw the full ellipse through the body.
>>
>>3131878
Thank you! Sorry for the desperation, I posted my shitty figure drawings for the past 3 threads, and didn't get a response.

yeah, I could see my torsos look a bit wonky, I'll take a look at some anatomy books, and try to fix them.

What do you mean by detail? Like when I add the fingers and whatnot? What's better in this case, focus on the figure and put the details aside?

Alright! I'll try drawing things through the body!

>I suggest drawing through on those as well, draw the full ellipse through the body.

Can you clarify what you mean by this?

Anyway, thank you so much for the response!

>>
>>3131914
Blog? How do I get as good as you?
>>
>>3131897
By detail I meant the curved lines on the body, I think you think they either add depth or help you find it but I don't know if they're actually accomplishing that for you.
They may just be wasted time.
If you changed just drawing a curve on the portion you actually see, and started drawing the curve's full shape which is an ellipse. Drawing that through may help you get an idea of the figure's full form.

Also just a tip when you're looking at anatomy understand how everything influences each other.
Going back to what I'm trying to say with drawing through, don't be mislead by the superficial appearances of things, what's behind and underneath influences what you see. Don't get stuck in the idea of the human body being like one of those mannequins you see with tube limbs. For instance your arm is several bones, covered in muscle, all constantly shifting and changing form. I know how obvious that is, but I was an idiot who didn't really grasp that and got caught up in thinking too much in strict nonfluid forms. Simplified forms are fine but don't think so simplistically or you'll run into the same set back I did.

Sorry to get long winded, also take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm in /beg/ too after all.
>>
>>3130472

some stuff still bugged me
>>
I thought this would likely be the place to ask for these kind of things. So:
I wanna be OK at drawing. Not good, not bad, just consistently OK. I want to be able to draw what I think of somewhat reasonably.
More specifically, I am mostly interested in drawing qt anime and bara boys and things like backgrounds. I recently started doing studies of human faces and things like hands and feet everyday for about an hour but I am wondering if I am actually learning anything.
What do, /ic/?
>>
>>3132137
Anytime you draw, you're learning and getting better. You just can't tell very well at the beginning, but in a month or so, you might be able to. It really depends on whether or not you're looking for improvements. Usually redrawing things help tell you that you're going down the right path since it'll come out better. The best thing you can do to be OK at drawing is to copy, copy, copy. Copy from life, copy from photos, copy from comics, copy anime, copy backgrounds, copy the stuff you want to draw. Then try to draw these things from memory and even put them together creatively. That's imaginative work. Studies are good if they are helping you figure out an immediate problem, but if you're studying for a long term thing, then yeah, you might not think you're learning anything. So it's your choice.

When I was a kid, 8-13yo, I used to draw comic and anime characters (Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, etc).

Also drew a lot of comics and would gift them to some people, random ass stories, etc.

Anyway, I wanna get back to it. But I don't wanna go back to pencil/paper kinda drawing, I'd prefer to get pens/mechanical pencils and tools that make things way easier. I know a good artist can draw awesome shit out of a napkin and an old ball point pen. I'm not trying to impress anyone, just wanna draw for myself, the max I wanna draw is a something that I can hang above my bed header in a frame.

Anyway, what's a good mechanical pencil, or pencil that's easy on the hand?

What do you call those easy to erase blue pencils people use for initial sketch? (skeleton/shape)

You got a recommended how to draw anime book? I did a google search but obviously too many choices.

I'm also an adult with a good paying job, so I don't mind having a budget from $100-$500 for pencils/erasers/markers/whatever (unless it turns out that's way underbudget for this)

From my understanding, the process is skeleton in that blue pencil, then sketch in black pencil, then marker for the good lines, and then erase all the pencil stuff (This coming from art I've comissioned in the past)

So I'd like to figure out how to kick-start this. I'm not looking to be an artist, I just wanna draw for myself and not suck at it.

Does it matter? You're not him. You will create work in your time, not his.

There's entirely too much attention on time here. This isn't a race. You will finish work according to your own talent, resources, creativity, and motivation. How long other people take is a meaningless number.
>>
>>3132280
>Learn to draw contour lines.
>LOOK at what you're drawing - you're symbol drawing, you're drawing what you think is there.
>Stop cheating on things like hair. Hair has a shape, a texture, you're just doing random lines hoping it works.

Honestly, this is the "starting point" kind of work you see in the beginning of an art 101 course, or what Betty Edwards of "Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain" saw at the beginning of the semester, with people who no training in drawing.

Is it horrible? No. Does it show any real talent or skill? No. Your job is to go from "not horrible" to "skilled'. The stickied threads have resources on what to look at, to get there.
>>
>>3132276
You're over thinking it. Buy some pencils, and some drawing pads - Strathmore are pretty good, and start drawing. Don't worry about blue pencils. (They're non-photo blue, btw) If you're aiming for inked lines, normal pencil is fine. However you get to the final inked lines is fine, especially as you're not going to need to learn industry best practices.
>>
>>3132137
The same thing everyone else does. Go to the stickied threads, read them, try the things listed there. Your goals are your own, but the beginning steps are the same for everyone - pick up a pencil, try to draw something.
>>
>>3132341
how does the fact that there's no reference affect this?

for faces? ive never seen that suggested for portrait, what do you mean?

No, I prefer paper.

The thing about reading something on your computer monitor is that you can easily tab out and fuck around on the Internet. When you're in front of a physical book, though, it's harder to get distracted, IMO

I say, if you have the tools, use them
I've seen quite a few speeded up videos for professional illustrators like the LoL splash art and what not, and they always move shit around to fix their fucked up anatomy/perspective.

It's not like you're tracing shit, and even those get away with it quite a bit.
>>
>>3131721
look at the cheekbones. hers juts out immediately after the eyes, yet you made it several inches lower instead
its good that you're trying to recognize the forms though, just make it more accurate.

also you pushed her lips out too far, looks like she's pouting. also the area between the eyebrows are too wide and too thick; her features are more refined.
>>
>>3131334
Watching a lot of pictures, and I mean A LOT, what you need to train is your eye, to analyze how lines and shapes and everything is formed, or the way a particular artist solves his compositions.

Then you can start solving a drawing by yourself when you have an idea of how to solve a problem, before having an idea it's very hard but it's also more spontaneous. There will be gap between your ideas and your drawings, that's when you start practicing a lot, to close the gap between your thoughts and what your hand does to tame your tool, but before that training your eye to understand and identify how things are made up is what gives you comfort and guidance on how to draw from imagination.

Once you have both the understanding of how things are made up, and the experience of projecting them on a 2d surface, is when you can start bending the rules and making up your own to how you like things to be, identify your strenghts and weaknesses, and either improve what you hate doing, or abuse what you're good at for emphasis and style. But if you start doing it backwards you might get frustrated as your work won't look as good, it's totally viable and it's the natural way most people learn to draw, by doodling random stuff when they were kids without any boundaries or rules or ideas, but when you want specific results it can be somewhat frustrating.|
>>

>why inspired you to create art?
Akira Toriyama, love his style. I'm learning the fundamentals so I can stylize like him and make my own comics. Or work for Marvel/DC with a realistic approach if the other fails.
>what is your favorite medium?
Tradicional. Inks, watercolour and markers. I only use digital for gradients and screentones.
>what are you currently having issues with in regards to your art?
Body anatomy. I dedicated so much time for drawing the head, the rest of anatomy suffered. Once I get hold of body anatomy I'll start to stylize my stuff a bit. So excited.

I don't know I've always been drawing. You'd think I'd actually been good by now.

I primarily work in Pencil but I should really try to branch out and improve else where.

Everything but perspective and form is something I' covet most of all. Nothing makes me more jealous than when an artist can apparently effortlessly make something that can feel 3 dimensional and solid.

I've noticed a lot of /beg/ tier professional art in video games. Is getting a job just about connections?

That's not /beg/ tier. Whoever painted that have some understanding of fundamentals.

This >>3132786 is /beg/ tier

Card games illustration are usually not picky. If you can do what the art director tells you. You're good to go. If you have good grasp on the fundamentals and awesome creativity, even better.

Connections helps but you don't really need it. Do good job, good personality and good taste you can get jobs.

You cannot shade correctly if you don't understand the planes of the head.
Also I'm not an expert but I think values should be stronger. Observe examples in reality or just take a pic of yourself.
>>
>>3131281
I highly recommend you understand and internalize the phrase, "Don't polish a turd". You wasted time shading that picture when you could have drawn numerous figures to actually help with your gesture work and anatomy.
