These are some weird characters I'm making, I'm planning on making a few more and hopefully smashing them all into one picture which might not work but we'll see. They're supposed to be gods, but of what specifically I'm not sure

I don't know, are they too weird or boring?

>>
>>3111645
Lol yeah it's supposed to be the face he does at the beginning of the Gilbert Gottfried podcast
>>
>>3111651
How do you like the new season so far? I found the bobby lee and david letterman ones unwatchable but mike tyson and sarah silverman were great.
>>
>>3111662
Norm either respects the guest too much or is way to xanaxed out in the new episodes. The fact that he doesn't fuck with the guests kills the amazing vibe the first two season had to them. Also the opening remarks and jokes sections have been cut way short, and the jokes themselves don't seem as funny as before.

The worst part though is the fact that Egret is now 'in' on the joke that he's a holocaust denying punching bag, which makes it much harder to have genuine moments of him being bullied by Norm and the guests.
>>
>>3111682
the moment in the british guy episode where norm forgets adam's name was choicely vicious.

but yeah some of the best moments in the show are from opening remarks, and I think some of the pressure is that the guests he's got now are HUUUUGE celebrities, so he doesn't want to step on their toes. When he had nobodies like Todd Glass on he had no problem making fun of him.

I think the most interesting moment out of all of the new ones was Mike Tyson making fun of Norm the whole time. When he grabs his arm and norms like "please don't snap my wrist like a twig" it reminded me of how i dealt with big rough-housey guys at school that wanted to be my friend. Just laugh and jokingly tell them not to beat the shit out of you.
>>
>>3111691
During the part where Tyson was slapping Norm with the card and yelling "SAY IT HONKY" I was honestly scared for Norm because a few days before that I'd just watched an episode of the Mike Tyson Mysteries show where the character Norm voices says to his buddy that Mike Tyson could kill them at any time.

The scene is at the 9:05 mark

There is a chart from loomis on proportions, try compare it, But it seems to me that the head is a bit to big not sure. It's just a two value system. One value for lights, one value for shadows. Use a soft brush or smudge tool to soften the terminator line. Soften it more on rounder forms and keep it harder on more sudden plane changes.

I find it difficult to figure out the intricate details of how say, a hand is shaped but when you see another artist tackle it, you see what they emphasize and as you study their drawings and start to look at the original reference (your hand) suddenly all those things you picked out in their drawings are much more obvious.

>>3115349
Observe your reference more closely. You got some incorrect proportions, made the helmet way too small, painted values as you imagined them instead of what is in front of you etc. You don't need to add more detail or polish, but get a higher degree of accuracy at the stage you are at.
>>
>>3115364
Careful with overusing that grainy texture brush. Right now it is flattening the image/ruining scale, and also making all your materials look the same. Be more selective in where the texture appears, and use it sparingly only when needed.
>>
>>3115370

>>3115364
A good attempt, but now, go back, and try again, and this time paint what's actually there, and not what you think is there. Actually draw the shapes of the trees, with lighting and texture, instead of these Bob Ross "happy trees" symbol painting. Paint the actual forms and textures of the mountains - a shot like that, you should have more than enough detail to work with. Work at a larger resolution, so you don't get the pixelated effect, which is ruining the work.
>>
>>3114847
Concept art is about concept - obviously. To be a good conceptual artist, it requires good painting and drawing skills, but also good ideas. You're fleshing out a reality from references or ideas from other people. Illustration, in the general sense, is the same thing - you're painting ideas, not still life or landscapes. If you look at "Art Of..." books for games, you'll see the artists exploring ideas, concepts, themes, moods, color schemes, every part of the decision making process of designing a game.
Your path right now should be continuing to develop your drawing and painting skills, and your conceptual skills. Design characters, settings, moods. Pick a couple of your favorite albums, and design covers for them. Pick a couple games, and design characters/settings. Pick a couple favorite books, and do some illustrations of the story, and work out what the characters and settings look like.
Conceptual art is training your hand, your eye, and your brain. You can't rush it, and you can't cheat it - you either have the skills to do it, or you don't. There's nothing wrong with not being able to do it, your strengths may be elsewhere.

I may redo this one then, thanks. To be honest I stopped drawing the exact trees because there were so many, and in environment drawing there seems to be so many ambiguous/"random" shapes to draw that drawing them exact felt like the "wrong" way to go about things. Especially with this picture, because there are soooo many dots of snow in the reference that I would never be able to draw. What do you think?

Also, I was working at 2000px as per usual - too small or no?
>>
>>3115478
2000px, at what dimensions? I generally work at 2x the final output size (or just a basic size, like 11x17) at 300 dpi - printers don't need more than that.

As for drawing details - that's one of the things about landscapes - the details can take forever. Maybe it's just not your thing - I like doing it. You don't have to be 100% accurate - who's gonna know? - but you should be painting more accurate forms of the trees, not the symbol painting you're doing. Yes, it can be tedious - but again, maybe it's not going to be your thing. I love painting rocks. I love the shapes, the cracks, the textures, the colors - other people would be bored to tears. And, I love landscapes, and making them, nothing better than firing a movie or podcast up, and painting for a couple hours, losing myself in painting trees, trying to make each one unique, and realistic. Each kind of tree has it's own look - how the leaves are bunched, how the limbs grow, how the light reflects off them, how they grow in relation to each other. If that's not your thing, it's fine - but it's how you have to approach it, to do it well. Make sense? If you're doing this just to get it done, and not enjoying it, then I'd say move onto something else. Landscapes are probably not your thing. Or, find other landscapes to paint - you could certainly find an easier one to do. Or, try this again as a drawing, and just capture as many of the contours as you can - the shape and outlines of the hills, rocks, and trees. Then paint on top of that.

Well, I'd like to make it my thing, as i'd feel weird having practiced all other aspects of art except for landscapes. I feel that's important if going into concept/creature design like I plan to. I want to "make it my thing" at least somewhat. I've been reading "colour and light" which is what got me inspired into practicing some landscapes this week, as well as being more aware of light effects in environments.

I can see where you're coming from and I think you worded it really well. I will try to take more care and re-draw this scene and try to get myself interested in the forms and details. Might choose an easier reference, I don't know yet, this one is just kind of daunting with the tiny sticks and snow.

The width is usually 2000px with 300 dpi.
>>
>>3115503
Sounds good. Approaching a landscape is like any painting - what is it about this scene that's important to you to show to other people? Is it the dramatic lighting? Is it the rocks? Is it the way certain leaves look? You can just treat it as an overall "mood" or "feel", but landscape is more than that, it has components, all playing off each other. Start digging into those components, and figure out what really attracts your eye, what is compelling to you. It's easier to sell a landscape if there's something in it that gets you off, personally - you're saying "Hey, check this out!" to your audience. In that respect, reading what photographers see when they take the photos we copy helps break into that mindset.

You are fantastic at teaching actually, I truly appreciate it. It's given me a lot to think about in terms of appreciating landscapes.

Also, since someone mentioned the over-use of texture brush in my landscape... Here is a study I did earlier but didn't finish (the eyes and surrounding orbits are the only "finished" parts, although he looks cross-eyed), I was wondering if there's an overuse of the texture brush here, and if there is, any suggested method to help balance it?

The grip for the weapon is way too wide. When you grip a pistol grip, your thumb rolls forward, not back. The pisto grip is designed to fit between the roll of the thumb and the knuckles and is slanted to fit the angle of the knuckles.

Draw weapons the way weapons are made: to fit the hand. Do not make the hand fit the weapon.

That's where most of my stuff is at.

I don't consider myself that good and I think my art still flunctuates a lot in quality, depending on how much time I can put in. And I'm not afraid to use 3D in paintings. One wise anon once said to me: The technical process shouldn't hinder the creative. But at the same time I'm schooling myself each evening in skills necessary for creating art for entertainment. I'm basically going through Scott Robertsons and James Gurneys books as well as "The Skilled Huntsman", "Framed Ink" and anatomy books. It's hard but it seems to pay off. And I have a huge passion for a personal project which this artwork is for.

Inspiration comes from a lot of sources and out of them comes simple ideas that I mull over for a long while until something clicks and the simple idea turns into a more complex one. times I'll have a few simple ideas that on their own aren't much but I'll have an epiphany and combine the two making something worth while. I never just sit down and come up with something out of the blue.

This picture all started with the idea of a vampire like character, who lived in sewers that could spawn multiple limbs from underneath a shawl that I came up with a few years ago, its' only recently that I started combining other ideas with it. Now it's turning into a weird fantasy/folklore thing due to other inspirations

Hey /draw/ i know there's some oil painters in here. Brian, if I set up the background to a Painting, how long do I have to let it dry before I do the second layer? Or does it not matter as long as I obey fat/lean and am comfortable with the bottom layer's tackiness?

Trying to achieve a parrish-esque effect like 'at close of day'. Doing it on cheap chipboard though, hence the fucked up drippy texture.
>>
>>3119697
what's the medium? are you thinning with turps or linseed oil?

either way if the first layer is thinned enough it should take about 2 hours for turps and 3 or 4 for linseed oil if you plan on painting opaquely on top of it as quickly as possible.

Texturally, if you want absolutely dry, dragged brushstrokes wait a full day. If you want the paint to mix and push around the paint you could wait as short as 20 minutes. If you want to paint thin on top of thin wait a full day as well.
>>
>>3119697
also: shitty canvases like i use cost like $7 a piece if you buy the bundles of them. idk how far a drive it is to the nearest store for canvases, but any canvas is superior for representational work than cardboard. Unless you're planning on doing some kind of youthful, rebellious "I use cheap materials" look.
>>
>>3119707
Thanks for the input! Thinning with linseed, but it was still wet to the touch at 2 days (see lower left corner). Though, maybe wet to a finger means I could still paint on top? It's on there pretty thin, I brushed a lott off.

As for the cardboard, I'm just using it till I have a little confidence with the handling of the medium. $7 puts too much psychological pressure on for experimentation, at least compared to $0.50 cardboard.

Any advice on prepping hardboard perchance?
>>
>>3119264

>>
>>3119736
If there's no pressure for experimentation you should just try painting on top of it now. See what is dry enough or wet enough for what you're trying to do

If you want a Parrish effect, you need to try and paint like he did. You really can't get close to what he did, without it.

Here's what he did: He would work on primed boards, gessoed over several layers, and sanded with pumice each layer for a perfectly flat surface. Then he'd sketch out what he needed, and would put a layer of varnish over the pencil, letting it dry completely before moving on - and would sand the varnish layer with pumice, to keep it smooth. Then, he would do one layer of each color - one for blue, one for the yellows, one for the reds - a lot of his colors are optically mixed by the eye from multiple layers of paint. Each layer would be varnished, pumiced, and let to dry completely - is paintings took a LONG time, because of that. That's how he got his rich, vibrant colors. He was doing something a couple artists were trying, he was trying to emulate the new methods of screen printing (CMYK), trying to use pure colors, to make it easier to reproduce. Printing tech evolved quickly enough that they were able to reproduce any color an artist mixed on his palette, so the technique didn't become widespread - but it's the best way to get rich, vibrant color that almost glows. If you ever get to see a Parrish in person, you'll understand - they're almost neon colors.
A low rent approach would be to lay each color of the graduation down as it's own transparent layer, using glaze to create the graduation, so the colors mix optically. I've done it on small pieces as an experiment, you can get effects you can't get any other way.
>>
>>3119710
Wood panels are better than canvas, with several layers of gesso, sanded between coats. Speedball has hardwood panels, pre-gessoed, for $2 for a 9x12 panel - they're great for student work. For finished work, I've been using the hardwood on rails they sell at Blick, and gesso them myself. I've never been a fan of canvas, and usually ended up gessoing them up to get rid of the weave - so there's really no point in doing that, so I switched to boards. They're in my opinion superior to canvas. Ampersand has really nice primed boards, but they're more pricey, not really good for learning.
Canvas became popular because it's easier to create flat surface over stretcher bars, than to get perfectly flat pieces of wood. Now, that's not a problem. If you're doing work with a high detail, you should consider wood panels. Don't go below 1/4", though, as those can warp with enough paint on them, unless it's mounted to a frame.
Paper is fine for commercial work that isn't expected to last forever, only long enough to be scanned/photographed. Primed illustration board and heavier bristol is fine, for that kind of work, and canvas papers are fine for learning. Canvas is ONE option, and not necessarily the best by any means. I prefer a flat, rigid board for representational work, with no give like canvas has (the canvas will push in a little with pressure. If you're doing large canvases, like the texture, and want the painting to last, canvas is a good choice. Smaller work ill last just as long on wood panels - a lot of the paintings in museums are on wood panels.
>>
>>3119736
Prepping is the same as any surface, for oil - a couple layers of gesso, sanded in between coats. You might not want to sand the panel for the first coat, for some tooth for the gesso to stick to.
As I posted before, Speedball sells some very cheaply priced hardwood primed panels for a couple of bucks each, you may want to try some.

As for drying, try some Liquin as a medium, with the linseed, or straight. Liquin can halve the drying time of thin glazes.
>>
>>3119850
>ended up gessoing them up to get rid of the weave
well the weave is what makes canvas a good surface. you can create texture in work, or not, and canvas provides an outlet for both. Painting on wood in my experience has one look: flat.
>>
>>3119861
>well the weave is what makes canvas a good surface.
Nonsense. I've studied some of the greatest paintings in the world, in person, from Tadema to Bouguereau to Gerome, and the one commonality is - no canvas texture. They primed their surfaces flat, so the weave wouldn't interfere with the subject.
YOUR paintings might look flat on board, but the masterpieces hanging in museums, painted on board, prove you wrong. Canvas is a choice, not an absolute.

Lovely scene, story and lighting. Was it you who sketched those south american looking garments? Must've been.

Right now it feels like the composition is confused, I would like to see you avoid darker values away from the focal point . Be especially careful with the blue dude in the background as he upsets the leading line from bottom left to the focal point

The water ripples feel too dark

>glaze to create the graduation
Can you elaborate on this? Are you saying in the pic here, he'd do the yellow gradated into background white, varnish, then blue gradated over white and yellow gradation? Does the varnish matter or will any clear stuff do?

Also, I would think that a layer of varnish over each layer of tube color would dampen colors instead of just laying them on thinly one directly on the next. Where'd you learn about Parrish's process? Pic is what I'm goin for.

http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/parrishc.htm

Read this, it's from the man himself.

The white in the painting is from the background, the gesso. He would do a layer of blue, transparently - 100% blue, to 0% blue. So the sky would be a glaze where the top has blue paint in the glaze, and the bottom would have none. That would be allowed to dry completely, then he'd do the other colors on top of it. He said he started with blue.

I learned about his technique originally in art history class, and since then, as one of my favorite artists, I own several books on him, some of them very expensive.
This clip on YouTube goes into his technique.

Fuck yeah, this explains everything but one thing: if he uses stipple brushes to rough-house pigment across the page into a gradient, how does he achieve intricate razor sharp edges like on mountains, humans, or the columns in daybreak? I feel like it's too rough for any masking fluid or tape to put up with.

Thanks for the links, I've been wondering how to apply "10%" of a color onto a white background forever so I could get vibrant light blues.

For whatever reason, omitting the rest of the body really irritates me. Draw the whole body.

Pro Tip: Nipples on women have certain rules. If you can see one head on, generally you will see the other at an angle. Looking down, on a woman's body, if you draw a line from each nipple to the spine, it will be an angle around 90 degrees, give or take. The times it won't are for older women, really fat women with pendulous breasts, or a woman with fake boobs. The kind of body you've drawn, the nipple on the right will be in profile.

Proportions seem a bit off. Eyes and nose a bit too small. Nose and mouth a bit too high. Hands and the entire left leg too large.

Planes in the clavicle and neck area look way off. Break down the forms into something more blocky and pay attention to the angle of the light source. Blend after to round the forms as needed.
>>
>>3121436
You're doing a good job but the head construction is fucked and your hue range is nonexistent. I didn't need a color picker to tell you're you're essentially just playing with value and chroma and it makes your subject look dull and lifeless. You're taking the easy way out with these warm shadows and the least you can do is widen your reach in the light. Give us some movement!

Also, pure black as background for a figure is about the worst thing you can do, work with some secondary light (color) and have it interplay with the hue of your subjects skin, since that's what skin does. It's not just one hue
>>
>>3121379
I really like this, the greys are really pulling their weight here. I don't hate the blurry edge effects but you're not stepping out of your comfort zone by leaving us with a torso. It would be fun to see more greens, and cooler reds, it's a bit too samey "flesh-toned"

not OP, how the fuck does that help if you don't even say where.

I think the foot is foreshortened and the hands are a bit large, but aside from that I don't see any proportion problems. actually looks pretty good, especially the collar bone area. The deltoid at the front should attach a bit more on the clavicle though. also her eyes look dead, maybe give them so shine

nice colours, that's generally an appealing look you have picked out there

heres a quick garbage redline since i wanted to point out some things, namely, when you lift up your hand like that, your collarbone lifts too, it's all interconnected. her pose doesn't look like she's really aiming either, idk if you're going for that.
not sure what her other hand is doing, but if its meant to be holding something it should probably be clenched. get up and try the pose yourself. the line on her elbow joint cuts in too far and the overall joint is too thin, there's no room for the muscle and bone. it's also too long, check proportions. also modern skirts are usually cut to cinch around the natural waistline

if anyone wants to redline the redline feel free

Values are too chaotic.
Buildings on the left seem to be the focal point (because they have the sharpest edges), but there is no flow or detail gradation leading to them.
Also when you draw trees try to variate brush size, for example here you should paint tree in foreground with bigger strokes than rest to show distance.

Move onto something else, and revisit the piece later. It's very common to get stuck, or lose your inspiration for something, and you're just spinning your wheels picking at it, and you'll probably ruin it by overworking it. Put it away, and look at it in a couple weeks/months.
>>
>>3122720
By choosing subjects that have something to say - or that have things in it that appeal to you, and you want to show other people. It could be simply the way the sunlight hits a wall, and creates shadows, or how a line of trees look, or a pretty sky with clouds. It's painting something that catches your eye, and you're saying "hey, check this out!"

Landscapes have evolved over the years. In the dim and distant past, when photography and travel didn't exist for most people, hanging a painting was a way to travel, or explore the world. Immigrants would hang paintings of their home country. People in Europe loved paintings of the east, and Africa.

Now, these days, we can see any point in the globe via photography, so landscape is more personal now, it's you showing people what you find interesting about the world around you, like a cool shaped tree, or dramatic waves on the ocean.

Painting landscape just to get it done? You're probably going to create dull, lifeless snapshots that could be done better with a cell phone camera. You have to invest yourself in what you're showing other people.

Finish this sentence when painting a landscape:

"I'm painting this because I like [fill in the blank]".

If you can't, there's no reason to be doing it.

Just an idea sketch, how are proportions, composition and values?
>>
>>3123090
Proportions are what they are, this is a cartoon so they can be off and still work.

Composition is awkward. You're trying to do a movie frame, and all you're doing is cutting the scene in half, with a strong diagonal down the left side of the figure in the foreground. Your eye enters the piece, and is directed right out of the piece by that diagonal. The focus of the piece, the figure on the right, is lost because of that.
And, because the right side isn't finished, the entire thing feels cramped and pushed to the left.
Values are flat. There is no difference in value, in the planes of space, the values of the background are the same as the values of the foreground. You're trying to create drama in a scene, but the values strip it out. The eye doesn't know where to go (that compositional issue doesnt help, either), and we have no visual cues what's the focus and narrative of it. The level of detail is the same, as well, which helps to flatten it. You have no sense of depth of field.

And, the left arm on the right figure is awkward, and looks like it;s broken, her pose is awkward, as her feet arent under the center of mass, and and her hips are twisted for no apparent reason. This would be a simple pose to have a friend or sibling do for you, to block out simply.

>>3120810
Looks like what you get when you don't study the theory or work systematically and just approach it intuitively.
Squint and you should be able to distinguish front plane from side plane easily, but because of all the little spots and variation, yours loses its read.
Remember - all the minor forms conform to the major form, be it gesture drawing or value rendering.
Not saying it's the perfect example, but pic related was started with a cube, just two planes that were then divided into smaller and smaller ones.

Do you have a reference to compare it to?
