This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.
Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

well its nice to know lefty isnt dead.
Let me know what you guys think, submitting all my shit to art schools right now so I'm lightweight stressed about the quality of my work despite its unique stylization. Never learned fundamentals outside of doing some reading bc fuck the institution but now it's biting me in the ass. I have many more like this if yall want
Well this was on the other thread and I brought it here.
messin around with kyle's screentone brushes.
brought over here from other thread, mouth looks really dumb right now
>>2338261
>>2338259
does this look better? it's a pretty rough paintover but placement of everything/ fluidity-wise.
>>2338312
it's camilla from fire emblem fates, not my character. still fiddling with the position of the mouth right now.
>>2339117
ayee will check them out, thanks!
>>2339309
her left or the viewer's left? it's probably worse now, oops.
>>2339930
Yeah I think it is better. Her stance feels a bit wide now though. And her facial expression can use work. Why is she looking down at the ground?
>>2339930
this is why you perfect the sketch before you paint, kids. you put too much work fixing mistakes.
>>2339850
nice lines
crits before i move forward would be nice!!
>>2339944
interesting style... i would push the shape design more so it reads better/is more interesting to look at.
>>2339978
Really weak / awkward grip with right hand. Wrist is bent backwards a lot and pinky sticking out for no real reason. Holding up a piece of metal like that you would expect a very firm grip - straight wrist. The shoulder also seems quite far out to the side / low, almost disjointed.
>>2339993
thanks for the quick reply! i hope this is better. i feel like i lost some of the casualness and flow, but that kind of feel is probably not appropriate in this scenario anyway, like you said.
Can someone redline/help me with this? I know something is horribly wonky with it but I cant figure it out. Reference on the right.
>>2340097
Look at the negative space, around the arms, chest, legs, head, etc. A lot of the shapes are wrong. There's some bad angles, things look disproportionate. Spend a lot longer measuring.
>>2340039
here are some rough colours before i go to sleep. i didn't plan it out very well! i'm not totally sure if the BG is working, so any crits there would be much appreciated. and let me know if the rest of it is working OK too, of course!!
>>2340097
you didn't even care about the way the arms fall on the legs, her right leg is completely fucked, her back is wrong, head is too big and neck is too forwards
I don't understand why you ask this, it should be pretty obvious to the eye
>>2340102
thanks a lot! I can see it now.
Reposting since the progress thread is pruned
>>2340117
Can't tell if bait or if you just haven't improved since 2011/2012
>>2339930
Some thoughts:
Some big anatomical errors that I did not fix all of. Arm too short, (if her left arm is supposed to be facing the viewer, it's drawn very awkwardly) body too stumpy, probably too meaty around the waist (unless that's what you were going for, but the character isn't SUPPOSED to be fat so I assume you weren't going for that) awkward shoulder placements, which in turn makes the titties out of place which I did not touch, boring values (everything is too mid-tone even with all that shading) the unappealing face, the inconsistency of the wind with the hair and fabric on the bottom, inconsistent lightsource (light is hitting the hair/face/body from the left but also light from her back if you look at the upper thigh) You could also work on the expression to something more heroic (I kept it neutral with mouth open as original pic) and a lot of other things.
>>2340170
Nice again mane
Finished line work I guess. Added some flat colors. Will work on shading tomorrow.
I need to study drapery and hands...
>>2340263
The wolfhead's lines look really messy and heavy compared to the other lines
>>2340170
i know you use refs.
>>2340097
head angle too low, spine too bent, left leg angle wrong, arms in wrong places and too short, entire chest area is wrong. literally everything is wrong, it's not even worth redlining.

It's very high key at the moment, which really takes away from the glow of whatever she is holding and the forge. I would try maybe making anything not hit by warm light to be a couple value notches down. Also given how opaque and hard all the shapes are, just doing a very subtle soft brush colour dodge over the glowing stick would probably really make it pop.

>>2340864
i dunno how bright i want to make it, but i appreciate the suggestions! i've never used colour dodge before, it feels almost like an atmospheric cheat, lol.
>>2340907
The thing is that the light source you're using is pretty damn close to white, so that base color selection pretty much deems the brightness
from there it's just adjusting the values of the shadows (and/or the light source) and color correcting
>>2340654

And remember, don't shade with black unless you're going for high contrast.
>>2341051
But he's right. You need to learn to draw first. You have to know the rules before you can break them, etc. You won't get ass pats here.

>>2341000
At this level, don't think about what your style "really is". It is time wasted. Style comes with time and style changes with time. At this point you struggle even with the fundamentals. If you start worrying about style now, you will never get anywhere. Just learn to draw, draw what you find aesthetically pleasing. Forget about style.
>>2341084
Makes sense. Thanks anon. I've been focusing on that a lot and this just makes sense.

clear understanding of form and except for lack of a pelvis its decent anatomy. Theres much worse people in the regular threads that go under the radar. how long are people supposed to stay in the beginner thread. more than a year?
>>2341083
You are not impressing anyone with your shitposting skills. Go draw and shut up.
>>2341061
its actually more akin to
>learn to stand before you learn to double backflip
>>2341115
>clear understanding of form
>decent anatomy
I beg to differ. First of all he is trying to twist the torso but does not understand form enough to show what is in front of what, what is pulling from where and what's compressing and tilting. In order to do it more convincingly he needs to study anatomy as understanding the how and why and where things are and where they're being pulled from will help describe form much better but before that he also needs to understand perspective as well as provide a graceful and unstiff figure.
>>2341121
there CLEARLY is AN understanding of form. Not a good one. but you can clearly see it. besides are you still saying that there isnt anyone worse in this thread (op image) that somehow got a free pass to being sent to the beginner thread unnecessarily?
>>2341124
No one gives you right to send anyone anywhere. You can shittalk, but that's all you can do.
>>2341132
no one can take away my right to s̶e̶n̶d̶ recommend people to go back and forth.
>>2341124
>there CLEARLY is AN understanding of form. Not a good one.
would you maybe call it a beginner's level understanding of form? that's kind of what it looks like to me! i appreciate that you're livening up the board a bit, but i agree with the other poster in that i find it weird that you tell people to 'graduate' up and out of the beginner's thread when you don't post a whole lot of art yourself. of course, like you say, no one can take away your right to recommend people to and from each thread, but i feel like your time would be better spent drawing instead, especially when you seem like you're just barely out of the beginner's thread yourself :o

>>2342330
You can git gud by drawing nothing but stylized works as long as you're keeping the principles in mind.
As long as you're not through random shit on your animus and you're keeping anatomy in mind while periodically looking at (preferably real) references to figure out anatomy you'll learn both anatomy while also refining the style you enjoy.
>>2342389
pretty much yeah.
Its might be slower in the longer run, but its not as clear cut as some people on /ic/ make it seems. its not
>master this
>then do this
>then that
>then do animus
its
>draw whatever the fuck you want
>while doing studies and research on how to git gud then apply it to what you like
being able to draw realism for example is very helpful when drawing animus, but as long as you know what to draw and why its drawn that way you're pretty much set.

I added a lighter color to connect the girl and flowers and to make her silhouette stand out some more. The rest I just played around with placing colors in different places. Anysite that allows you to see a bulk of the persons work via thumbnails and they can pick and choose what they want to see with ease is a good art site. Tumblr lacks this and god forbid you are one of those faggot who repost random shit or other people's work more than their own shit. Not to mention people who go all Myspace and have crazy themes and music players slowing down the process.
People hate to scroll through shit. So if someone stumbles upon something you did, trace you to your tumblr wanting more, and they're faced with nothing but scrolling, they close the tab.
The archive mode helps a bit when the artist isn't a repost fiend, hashtags do help a lot but it's not like the archive mode where everything is small and selectable. You end up back to scrolling through pages and pages and unless you really have nothing better to do most people get irked and leave.

Most people have a Tumblr as a more social way of sharing your art and then have a professional portfolio blog like the one you've described. Tumblr is just a good way to find artists and get found. The thing about Tumblr is that a lot of people seem to only focus on singular blogs, when the pull of it is the constantly updating dashboard. It's not about what you have 10 pages back on your blog, it's about what you're putting on other people's dashboard right now.
People complain about good artists that reblog stuff instead of just posting their art, but these kind of people are great. One of my friends who has something over 10k followers and contacts with people at Disney reblogged a dumb short film I made and my follower count increased immensely. It turns making contacts into the gift that keeps giving, people sharing your work removes some of the trouble of actually networking.

the only way to get attention whores to fuck off is completely ignore them.
your anger just makes them feel important.
don't worry anon, if someone feels the need to get attention on 4chan of all places your life is probably heading in a better direction than theirs.
>>2342663
>Tumblr is just a good way to find artists and get found
No, Twitter is. Tumblr is pretty shit and it's art community is complete garbage, like Deviantart's.

honestly i dont see any sign of me being dis-humble as well as dont think that crowning a name is wrong if youre bad. I think everyone should have a name that way we wouldnt shit fight so much. What is gained in i/c is ruthlessness, but i dont think thats due to anonymity , i think its due to 4chan itself.

Id say keep posting with a name, but choose another alias to go under. Otherwise you'll always be known the dude who's nagging other people to post their work.
Sure if you want to become some sort of pseudo meme here on ic as the "post your work bloke" then go ahead and stick with it, but it wont help you
>>2342826

The "post your" work reply is super childish. Signs of people too protective of their and other people's work. If you don't like someone knocking your shit, ignore it.
>>2342852
It's just friendly banter, Anon.
>>2342852
Imagine they show their work to someone IRL and they're critique is a bit harsh.
"Well show your work"
>>2342851
is that all? this is the work that gave you confidence to speak up as if you were leagues above me, why do you have to post a completely different medium to throw me off too?
Unrelated but you should retake the picture. the light kills it for me.
>>2342849
its too late people would recognize me. I dont mind being hated or being a meme, the more im hated the more i know i have to improve. If someone spends their time explaining why im bad then all the better. I'll be good eventually.
>>2342866
>anon posts work

>>2342862
I've seen people have melt downs showing their sketch books or portfolios to professional artists who tell them like it is.
>>2342866

just calm your dunning kruger

>>2342880
>Comparing yourself to a pro athlete
Yeah sure I'll bite.
Shit comments like that or "why don't you make your own" or anything along those lines is childish. The person saying it can't handle the thing they like or in this case their own drawing being criticized harshly so they jump to a line to shut the person up so the feel comfortable again.
Telling someone who criticized a millionaire who throws a ball if they could do it too is illogical. That rich asshole has had years of training and still sucks when compared to his peers, the person pointing this out is did not have the years of training but still have the their own personal tastes to say whether not not that person is garbage.
Just like how your drawings are shit you still give critiques and advice because despite your lack of skill and practice you still have a level of taste and an eye for art.
But you still get but hurt when you see harsh critiques give towards others or yourself and like a little kid you go "Well, show your work."
Childish safety mechanism for your ego.
The people who shit on others around here are no better because they're mostly harsh due to not being able to excel in some way shape or form. But they too have taste and an eye for art to have an opinion no matter how tactless.
>>2342866
Wait a minute, if you're doing this for attention so that people will tell you what's wrong with your work, why do you always deflect their criticism by saying post your work or go down some other line of defending what you drew? I remember seeing a whole back and forth between you and someone else who critiqued your drawings so it didn't look like you actually wanted critique to me.
>>2342893
Where are these so called critiques i received? received nothing but insults on sketchwork because i dont want to post the same work everytime i get called out. When i SHOW OFF MY EGO, or rather, give insight i am specific in doing so, i dont try to help bbc because i know i cant. You dont need pros to comment on noobs works. But these people would rather insult the person than the critique.
Doesnt change the fact that the pro athlete doesnt suck. doesnt change the fact that my comments are legitimate ( which is why nobody critiques my comments) but i am not ( but the people who have the time to insult me dont have the skill to critique)

Nigga don't even try. This whole thing started because you posted "Beginner thread" to an anon like you're some hotshot.
Where was your constructive critic to that anon? No where. You weren't helping them you were debasing that anon who posted.
The reason why people shit on you is because you're constantly running your mouth and when told to fuck off or called out you cry "post your work" Stop being a heat seeking faggot and maybe you won't be attacked so much.

It's been a day or so and I'm still not sure what I want with this pose- Especially the arms
Help an anon out?
>>2342993
What are you going for? If it's mystery, it conveys well enough, I'd definitely gather reference for the pose (arched back, arms over head etc.) to make it convincing.
Hi, I don't draw very often but I do a bit. Everywhere I read that adultos humana are right heads in proportion and teens around seven. What happens to me many times is that my drawings tend to hover around six heads (or six and a bit) and I read that six heads is for characters below ten years old. Ignoring the flaws that come from my lack of experience, many of my character drawings look pretty much like teens. Is there something inherently wrong with six heads proportion when drawing teens? Does it look okay to me because they're just standing, they're manga or because I am being indulgent with myself? Do they look wrong (proportionally speaking) to you?
Also, any recommendation for these specific cases?
I don't usually post here, this looked like a good place to ask, please excuse me if it is not. Also sorry for the quality of the pic
>>2343009
>I read that adultos humana are right heads
Meant: I read that adult humans are eight heads

Bullshit. You kids can pirate all the $1000 courses and you still can't get good because you're stupid.
Copied the shit out of a nivanh chanthara robot I found on Pinterest. My new goal is to ink as well digitally as traditionally.
I think I will try to color it tomorrow
>>2343539
>that projection
It's time for you to shut up and draw anon. If you drew as much as you shitpost, you'd actually know how to draw.
So how do I decide what ratios to use when designing a cartoon character. How do I decide the shapes? When I look at different drawings the head shape is always something different yet always reads clearly and is appealing, when I try to do my own shapes and not copy what I see in other artists, it looks like a Dunwitch citizen. I can draw realistically but this is a whole different beast to me.
Fish man.
