>>

Thanks, bruh.

>>2284561
Shut up, fool. At least I'm chasing my dreams.
I'm already making a decent enough living through freelancing but I want to be able to support a family one day and to do that I need to up my game.

>>2284564
My rent is cheap enough, I'm covered.

>>2284566
My dad died years ago and I only inherited his debts. It's my grandma, his mother, who recently died. I was the only family member, who took care of her in her final years, which is why I got most of her money (of which I didn't know anything btw).

I'd post some work but /ic/ would just get double jelly and ruin my internet life.
>>
>>2284558
A year is nothing. I have taken the last 5 months to lvl up, and I am able to pay bills with commission money now-- I do nothing but draw all the time and try to evaluate myself to become better. I wager that I've made more progress than most people on /ic/ would given the same circumstances, and a year is not enough.

I thought it would be because I was very determined and disciplined, and though I have made worlds of improvement, getting on a pro level is insanely hard.

Maybe I'm not learning the right things... I mean, I went from not being able to sell my art to having a month-long wait on my commission list, but I look at the amount of skill needed to secure an illustration job or even just concept art and I don't even feel close.

Two solid years of 100% dedication to getting better I think would be enough. One year might be enough if you are a fit, white, social normie and people like you outright.

If I had 50K stashed away here is what I would spend it on:

-A brand spankin' new custom built PC that'll last you 5 years -$700-$900
-Cintiq 13HD $900
-Budget my food expenses to $100/month $1200/year
-spend it on 2 college level online classes per semester ~10k
-apartment -$900/mo $11k year
-internet/cable 400/year
total: ~25K (not including medical, hygiene, dental)

That's a 2 year plan of NEETing and far better than going to FZJEW School of Design and you're living by yourself. And of course you can always get a part-time/on call job to stretch it even more.

Elderly care.

Generally you just need to be a warm body because the stuff you have to do for them is basic bitch shit like preparing meals and some minor cleaning (which is actually limited by law to a certain % of your total time spent there). Sometimes they just want someone to talk to, but I can sketch and hold a conversation with people, especially if I tell them it's for school. RARELY you have to clean up actual feces and be with people as they die, so it's not for everyone, but I've been taking care of my gramps for a few years now so it's really easy work for me.

You will need to be licensed by the state Jan 1st (which my employer is doing all the leg work for so I'll just have to complete a course and pay the $25 or whatever fee they decide on) so if you are the kind of person who can do this type of work it's probably easier to find a franchise and work through them.

>50k

I inherited 8 million from my dad. I never have to work a day in my life. I'm considering going to gnomon school to study.

Stuff like this makes me question capitalism. My father pretty much did nothing with his life, but is from a rich family. I'm pretty much doing nothing with my life.

If I'm poor I would have a reason to work a reason to live. A normal person has to work for his life, he has to struggle all the time, but I had such an easy life I can't struggle for money. All my friends just party and use their family connection to go into banking where they just do drugs all the time.

Next year the tory government is going to scrap the inheritance tax so it even more of a con.
>>
>>2285428
Capitalism does suck. With 8 million though there's a lot of good you can do for the industry and young artists. You can start offering work with reasonable payment, influence the average pay in the industry and show those greedy fucks over at FFG or Privateer Press what art is actually worth. On top of that you'd be able to get started as an art director, make a name for yourself and maybe get hired by AAA companies once the word goes around.
Why not start financially helping out fellow (good) artists on /ic/ by giving them some work? You'll help them improve and they'll be able to work on their skills without much financial worry. You can just start up your own mobile tcg game with those illustrations and get some money back, if you're interested in that.

The industry needs people like you because it's been heading down a nasty route for years now and it's getting worse and worse. There needs to be wake up call.
>>
>>2285456
If done right this could be the next Applibot in terms of industry impact. But instead of hiring artists like Rapoza, Rigney or Negrea you can give the industry a big middle-finger by hiring lesser known names and ignoring the usual suspects. This stunt alone would ensure people talking about you.
>>
>>2285428

How did your family amass their fortune? I'm a little jealous of you. I don't give a shit about material possessions or wealth but it would be nice to never having to worry about money again and having the opportunity to focus on art 24/7 for the rest of my life. I hope you make the best of your fortunate position.

Lol how delusional are you? Top pros wouldn't give a shit, if you hired shitty entry level artists, they have their own better paying gigs working on well known movies and game franchises. If the art you commission is shit, top artists wont even want to work for you. And if you go around hiring good but un heard of pros, well thats good and all but hardly going to cause a stir in the industry. And if those artists are good but not well known, their lack of paid gigs is from not marketing themselves - other employers arent finding them, so how will you?
/ic/ you are kidding yourself if you think being at the level of personal OC commissions and porn fanart is enough to be desirable for commercial work lmao

Big jugs of apple juice -$1, beef patties, large pizza, noodles (mac and cheese), chips you name it all under $5. And then there is your local grocery where you can get organic vegetables way cheaper than any other place.

Stop eating t-bone steak every tuesdays and fridays maybe?
>>
>>2284979
That's only if you get certain types of contracts. saving $10 a month is not worth a contract
>>
>>2285717
Depends where you live on how much things cost. Meat here is pretty expensive, even chicken and stuff. I eat mostly rice, vegetables, and chicken or pork and don't eat out or buy expensive foods. Breakfast is usually toast and peanut butter. Still I can't do that on $100 a month.

Plus some of us want to eat healthier than frozen pizzas and instant noodles all day.
>>
>>2285736
Then don't eat meat so much, opt for cheaper proteins like beans or lentils once in a while. Brown Rice also has a a good chunk of protein and a lot of calories and goes with most meals.

Meat is really a luxury item that is taken for granted in the western world. People think they need it with every single meal where it's really not necessary at all.

I personally only eat it maybe once a week and honestly not only am I saving a lot of money but I feel generally less lethargic than I used to. (But that's probably due to the fact I don't eat fast food as much more than anything) But yeah, this way I can easily do <$100 a month.

Another thing I do to make sure I don't waste food is I spend one day a week meal prepping by pre-chopping all my veggies and cook a bunch of rice and potatoes and I can easily make meals or have some already prepared throughout the week. Breakfast is usually oats and bananas and peanutbutter.

Things get easier to manage once you get into certain habits.I used to spend maybe $300 a month and then after changing things around I slowly got down to a reasonable budget and only go over when I know I have extra to throw around.

Wow wasn't expecting such a good reply.

Out of curiosity, how much do you weigh? I feel like people also forget that different people need different amounts of food and that will factor into how much you spend. I'm an active 200lb guy. I eat way more than someone like my ex who weighed 95lbs (though she ironically spent more on food on account of eating out constantly).

Also I just checked Wolfram Alpha and apparently white and brown rice have almost identical protein content, though white rice might be slightly more.

> I feel like people also forget that different people need different amounts of food and that will factor into how much you spend. I'm an active 200lb guy

This is definitely true and I did forget about that aspect.

I'm 115lbs, 5"3 (female, obviously) and pretty active myself.

I used to live with a friend who weighed 200lbs but she was also my height. She didn't buy any groceries, I was kind of helping her out. She only lived with me for 3 months and I went from spending maybe $90-110/mo to about $150-170/mo. She was trying to lose weight though. I just had to refill on my staples more than anything- and I had to buy gallons of whole milk for her which I wouldn't buy normally. (I'm allergic to dairy)

Honestly I'm not sure if you could do the same with my budget at your weight and activity level but I think there are always ways to spend less and still eat healthy.

Oh and I only said brown rice because I assumed you were going for a healthy aspect, and while it's protein is pretty identical to white- it has more nutrients in it. I also think it has more flavor but it's not for everyone. White rice is fine too.
>>
>>2284558
I could get by for 5 years with 50k. You're probably gonna blow it all on hookers.
>>
>>2285682

Rubbish. I spent anywhere between $40-$60 a month on food and I am set for just about the month.

Rice is pretty cheap and is nutritionally superior to ramen which is basically salt and saturated fat. A few bags can easily become a month's supply.

I get 10lb bags of chicken and whole fish from my local market and those last months. I believe it's called "Saar's Market" if you've got it or something similar in your area.

If you have those out of the way, it gives you more money to buy other things months ahead.

Some other cheap stuff would include green onions (keeps me from salting things so much), oats, beans, stir fry, a SHIT ton of eggs, canned tuna (or the safer but more adventurous route "sardines"), swai, whiting, or tilapia fillets, hotdogs, etc. I can usually get most of the things on this list if I am jumping between stores. Winco has most of them.

It ain't all that expensive when you have all your bases covered prior.

Spending that same amount on a surplus of soda, chips, occasional McDonalds happy meal, and cups of saturated fat and salt each month is no way to live.
>>
>>2285841
>Spending that same amount on a surplus of soda, chips, occasional McDonalds happy meal, and cups of saturated fat and salt each month is no way to live.

This is so true and I think many artists can get into really bad habits that ruin their health in an attempt to stay on schedule with their art and studies

We gotta remember to take care of ourselves, it will help us in the long run
>>
>We gotta remember to take care of ourselves, it will help us in the long run

For sure, I mean... eating that way for years, I can say that it will impair you in more ways than just your physical appearance. The brain needs to be nourished in order to function properly.

Also medical bills are fucking expensive, and they only stack on each other as you get older.

What costed you $40 now, could either cost or save you $50,000 down the road.

Is tuna that cheap? I always see people talking about it, but last time I was at the store I seem to recall it being like 3 or 4 dollars a can. And considering a can isn't filling at all that hardly seems worth it. Wouldn't it be better buying bulk ground beef or something?
>>
>>2286372
That's not vegan
>>
>>2286376

Costco sells like big packs can't remember how many but I think it comes out to like $2-3 a can. Usually tuna is combined with some sort of carbohydrate (bread or crackers or even rice) to spread it between more meals. 1 can of tuna generally makes 2 sandwiches for me, and a sandwich is a whole meal so that's $1.25-1.50 per meal for me, which is pretty good. You could probably make a can last 3-4 meals if you're smaller or put more fillers into your meal.

I like playing games at 120fps, but that's not really where people cheap out, it's usually the PSU where they buy a cheap chinese one that
will set your system on fire on the first power outage and a cheap midi case without any fans or cooling that will rattle and make your
gpu and cpu run at 90c, if you buy a proper psu, a good case like a Lian Li one and a set of 3000 RPM noctua case fans then those alone
will cost you about 600 euro, but you will have proper cooling, nothing will run above 30c if you don't overclock and you will not have to worry about power outages ruining your system.

Pretty sure this thread is about getting good at art while on a budget. Playing Grand Halo Dutyfield 7 on high settings at 120fps really has fuck all to do with it.

But that's impossible for anyone on /ic/ so he might as well buy a proper pc.
