27 Sersiously? maybe 2-3 years ago. I just recently got over video game addiction. To be As good as Mullins/Ruan Jia. ....maybe I'll fail and become as good as Noah Bradley I'd still be pretty happy about that.
first guy here. i get paid to paint stuff already. most gigs aren't the kind of work i want to do, but they pay well generally. almost always better hourly wage at any other job that i would have to wear pants for.
30 started a couple years ago I'm a computer engineer trying to set up a company as soon as I'm confident about it, having a regular job in the meantime art for me is an hobby, the goal is to create something beautiful. my dream is to set up an art exhibition someday (before you laugh, it's pretty easy to do that here in Italy, you just rent a place and that's it. Obviously if the art sucks balls you're just wasting your money and people's time, so you need to have something good on your hands)
20 started when i was old enough to hold a crayon, and just never outgrew it like most of the other kids did i write but i guess that also counts as art (albeit not visual) my goal is to be able to financially sustain myself with my artwork or knowledge of art that i've acquired of the years, in and outside of college, whatever that means
I've doodled during class from time to time since gradeschool, but I only really started drawing more regularly 1 1/2 years ago. In the beginning I was still more of a child. I guess I was hoping to design characters and creatures for videogames or movies.
However, since then I've been reading a lot of classic literature and I'm trying to get into more recent western philosophy. I also posted on 4chan a lot.
Now that I have realized how much potential there is in storytelling, I've come to the conclusion that the videogame- and movieindustry just doesn't create much that I would want to work on, especially not in a position that gives me virtually no creative control. My current goal is to be good enough at art and life in general to sustain myself through work that is actually creative and allows me to be independant.

When it was time to decide which school to go to. I decided on a shitty art school that cost a fortune. Seemed like the easiest choice. I think I was 19 at the time. I didn't take it seriously until I was 21 though.
I read books and waste time on the internet. I also exercise 3 times a week in hopes of it helping with the tendonitis.
My goal is to have paid off my 83k student loan by the time I'm 50. Live in a small house out by the countryside. Do art to pay the bills but also to keep improving and have fun.
I used to have dreams of travelling the world while working freelance.

It felt good to be part of a community that didnt isolate you and decimate your ideas, but I was still in highschool. I stopped drawing them in 2013, but due to recent events, I may have to start doing it again but this time for paying for things.

>>1991905 22 My family tells me that I've been drawing/ painting since I was little. I would watch my aunt paint, and I think those little fanart displays on original toonami had a part. Other hobbies I have would be warhammer, games, movies and music. (I may be a lazy shit but it wasn't always like this, I used to work a lot. Three part time jobs and three seasonal gigs. It kept me busy mostly, but I got sick and my life kind of went up in smoke.. But hey, now I have all day every day to draw so I got that going for me I guess. I'm gonna be fine.)
I've never really had a goal. I've had delusions of being an illustrator.. Thought about doing art for albums and book covers, thought about doing comics. I've just sort of been putzing about without direction.. Im thinking of making a portfolio in the future and seeing what comes of it.. Like present it somehow get feedback. I've been drawing since i was about 10 or so, wasn't very good back then of course, but i mostly just drew comics for fun. I've been seriously drawing (actually learning anatomy and such) for about 3 years now. Don't worry too much, it doesn't really matter.
From my experience a lot of the people who claim to have been drawing since ever are quite stuck in their past of always being the best in class and can't admit sucking at something. And as you know, dealing with sucking at something is required to get better. I've seen quite a few of them staying in their comfort zone and on their high horse forever, while others who started at twentysomething just rushed past them.
25 since i was a kid, it was fun read, long nature walks a job in digital art with good wages that makes me happy with myself and with the means to live somewhere nice (and possibly isolated) by a beach.
<1year ago, primarily for personal enrichment with a tiny hope that I might be able to do art+programming for some crappy hobby games.
What do you do besides art?
Software development is my thing, 12-13years of experience, though it's a bit generous to count time before I was 16-17 as worthwhile experience. Aside from that I love music and the outdoors, robotics, 3d printing, and RC stuff.
What is your goal?
As above I'd like to be able to create my own art for some game projects, to work on in my free time and keep me sane. Realistically though, I don't know if I'll ever produce anything I'm willing to let see the light of day.
>20 >Around 7 on and off until high school been drawing ever since >college, gaming, reading, jerkin it, hiking, shooting, hunting, etc. >biomedical Engineering or story boarding, and make a webcomic someday.
I started like 5 months ago. So far I still suck. Feel like I made no progress...at all.
Besides art? I read a lot of comics. Mainly Japanese ones, but I'm not biased. I read all kinds of comics, American, European, I just happen to like the pacing of Japanese comics better.
My goal is to produce comics, and not have a headache everytime I try to fucking make a new story. It's fucking torture man, I stay up late and then end up scraping the story. Figure out a story and than lose interest, either because I realize it sucks or because I fucked up something when making it. Rinse & repeat. So far I have not finished a single complete work.

serious for, like, 6 months, but busy with work (IT) so progress is slow. A quick question: Does anyone know if you get paid a constant salary while working at a studio? Or is it, like, "You'll get paid when we get a gig," sort of thing? Is it more worth it to do commissions and sell personal works?
>>1991919 I'm 4 months sober from all videogames. So MMOs were what did me in. In all truth I'm not addicted to videogames, I honestly believe I can waste a couple days playing zelda, final fantasy or ace attorney just fine, then get back to work.
I'm addicted to the social aspect in online videogames. I loved people, but they didn't love me back. The final straw was realizing how cancerous the attitudes in these games became. They made them easier, people didn't hang out as much. They talked so much shit about each other. Always gloating and 1upping each other. I'm still nostalgic about the first couple years in the games, when nobody knew shit. That is NEVER coming back. I'm starting to get old because I realized this.
tl;dr I sold it all, tossed it, deleted my accounts. And thanks to a couple great tips online, I'm more productive in art than I've ever been. Losing friends, having a shit job, living with my parents, annoying them, my sister moving on in life, motivates me to work more and get the fuck out of my position.
>>1991905 Age. 26 I started drawing at age 12. I saw that anyone could draw and create anything they wanted. I cook and water plants. I work in a factory that is destroying my body. >What do you do besides art? I'm NEETing till I go back to school this Fall, so I weight train, meditate, read, and watch/listen to vidya livestreams. Hoping to get good enough to take porn commissions and make some money before school though.
>What is your goal? I'd like to be a great artist and put out tons of quality work - mostly digital and various traditional mediums, and I want to become proficient with 3d / animation too - before I die. Doesn't matter what it's for, could be entertainment industry shit or personal commissions or just my own stuff. If I could inspire some of my would-be audience to try their hand at creating art and to work hard at getting better, that would be pretty nice as well. It'd be great to keep making porn (for me moreso than getting paid) even if I somehow make it big as a pro, and if it were possible to do without negative consequences, I wouldn't mind having all my work united under one name, whether it's professional work or porn or otherwise. It'd also be great to live in Hawaii like Mullins, though I'd want a cozy little house with a home gym and studio all for myself rather than a mansion.
In my endgame as an artist, I want to do as I wish.
I'm 27, started drawing when I was 24 I think. I dont know why I started, I was bored and just started doodling out of nowhere. It was a hobby for awhile, just did it for fun, didnt care about getting better, I received much praise for being 'talented' from my friends and family, so I thought I was a natural until I started networking on art sites and very quickly learned how terrible I am haha.
My family began pressuring me to do something with it even though I had no mileage and didnt even know what perspective drawing was at the time. It really sucked the fun out of it for awhile (constantly lectured for not having a career) and now I work retail which Ive done for many years. I want to get my art to a level where I can make decent money with it, but I dont know how possible that is. I might have started too late and Ive spent the majority of my time trying to get my figures/faces to look good, I havent even started backgrounds yet. My characters still blow ass though so Ive had it in my mind that I should keep working on those before I start getting into backgrounds. Mind you, I still study various subjects even though most of what I draw is characters, Ive put a great deal of time into perspective as well as anatomy. Ive been on ic for a few years so Ive studied a lot of the books that are constantly mentioned, and the next book I plan on going through is Force.
>>1991905 So how many people do you think are actually secretly 12-17 on this board? Theres definitely some. I love the thought of some 27 year old bearded guy taking a critique seriously from some 12 year old mexican girl
>>1994188 When you get more experience you learn quite fast to deal with critique. In most cases you yourself are the one who knows what shit is wrong and how to fix it. No matter if it comes your 45 year old art director or a 14 year old kid from /ic/.
There's more young artists ignoring valuable feedback than older ones being affected by bad feedback.
I've always drawn , started making comics seriously when I was about 8
Right now I work fried chicken fast food hell 32 hours a week along with going to school part time for graphic design
I've realized the being talked into graphic design was stupid and I want to pursue my dream of illustration so im looking into going to art school Long term goal is to become a story board artist/concept artist/illustrator
>>1994427 >I've realized the being talked into graphic design was stupid
Its either too simple or too hard for Graphic Design. All you have to know is how to properly but quickly molest photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Use some basic fucking colors based on the companies design, or make a stupid fucking collage of other peoples work.
>19 >started drawing from i'd estimate about 4-5 years old, people always said i had talent so that kept me going, but for the most part, it was just something that i did when i was bored in class or had nothing else to do >i mostly just play video games, watch anime and occasionally play guitar, even though i'm shit >i have no goal other than to just get better. it would be nice to be able to do something that i actually like for a job

What do you do besides art? I'm a flight medic. I'm pre-med in school. I watch Netflix. I do karaoke sometimes.
What is your goal? I want to be a doctor. I love medicine. If I don't make it in to med school (I already scored a 38 on my MCAT and just have to finish my BS, so that probably won't happen) I will work as a paramedic and make comics.
Art-wise I want to draw comics. Webcomics is probably more likely while I am working and going to school, but it would be cool to draw for DC, Marvel, or Dark Horse.

>What is your goal? Long term: Become the best I can be in art--hopefully that means reaching and surpassing my heros in art.
Short term: clear up mental issues and get back into freelancing.
2010, it was cool really "seeing" for the first time, felt like I was on drugs looking at all the same shit. The feeling went away (I miss it so much), but sometimes I notice shapes in peoples faces and just get lost in how weird they look. I guess now I draw for the pleasure of seeing my completed works (which are mostly just gestures nowadays).
Ultimately, live off of some kind of IP (I don't care if it's static art, film, stories, comics, etc), but I haven't made much progress in that endeavor. Actually, that really makes that the means to an end and the end goal is to be a lazy fuck and do literally nothing (or euphemised, have the time and money for fun things).
>37 >Dec 2012 because I wanted to draw fanart like the things I saw posted in the "alternate art" threads on /b/ and /v/. >I'm an engineer. I also like playing fighting games. >To draw Jaime Jones level fanart of my favorite shows and games to gain fans and admiration from random strangers on the internet.
>22 >I always used to draw whatever was on my mind since I was about 4 or 5 years old. Conciously drawing to get better since I was 16, only started last year with learning the basics. >I'm a student getting into mobile/webservice development, I try to make videogames as a hobby. I also play videogames :) >My goal is to be able to draw effectively and something that I can be proud to call my own.
>18 >All my life, but got serious less than one year ago. >Nothing, go to school and watch vids, read books to improve. Occasionally an episode or two of animu. >To become as good as possible and give all before I die.
>How old are you? 19 since last october >When and why did you start drawing? Seriously since April of last year. I discovered Loomis. I NEED to be as good as him. >What do you do besides art? I read comics, study. >What is your goal? Become so good at art that people will pay me to do so.
>How old are you? Pushing 30 >When and why did you start drawing? Very young, I liked drawing/painting/sculpting/photo/video/etc. (currently working with stained glass) so I did it. >What do you do besides art? Big boy job, listen to my girlfriend bitch, work on home improvement projects so my girlfriend stops bitching for 5 minutes, go out and do stuff >What is your goal? Stronger financial security, maybe try a new art medium or buckle down and start trying to master one (I don't really like digital, but I'm not opposed to becoming more familiar with it). I've already traveled a bunch and I'm not actively trying to have kids, so I'm somewhat on my way.
>How old are you? 24 soon >When and why did you start drawing? Always did, constantly. I was deaf as a kid and spent a lot of time alone whilst my parents were out before all kids had consoles and tvs, so that could be a reason. I think my mother encouraged it a lot, too. >What do you do besides art? Sit and cry about how I'm a piece of shit that doesn't work hard, and then waste time on the internet. >What is your goal? Supporting myself through art. I'll probably be stuck in the cycle of minimum wage shop jobs and then art admin jobs until I just kill myself though.
18 Kindergarten, the other kids wanted to color pictures so I drew lines for them. Felt immense pride when I was the first of my age group to realize that the sky isn't a flat line. Competed with a classmate through elementary school Vidia games I want to make something amazing and won't stop before I reach it --- and thus I will never stop until my body goes cold.
>>1991905 >21 >8 years ago I started drawing, but only became serious 5 years later. Never done requests, commissions, nor promote. >Lazy as fuck. Only staying in a fine art and visual culture course to keep sanity up while improving step by step. >To improve my art (Brent Hollowell and Nebenzial standard of great art) and to become pro I don't think I'm going to make it tbh, but it's something to appreciate.
How old are you? >23 When and why did you start drawing? >around 9 years ol, drew lots of DBZ and sailor moon because hurr anime What do you do besides art? >I play magic the gathering and other tabletop shit. I'm actually altering magic cards now as a means to teach myself how to paint What is your goal? >save up for a cintiq companion 2 or a surface pro 3 and learn to draw digitally. I don't plan to do art as a career.
>22 >started arting about 17, never did as a kid much. Serious this year. Can't stand job and shit any more. >Work online. Sleep. Couple hours of vidyas with friends in evening, full on hermit aside from that. Movies, read, and consume and absorb art like crazy. >short term= make money, mid-term= live off my own/illustration work, long-term= make godly personal project.
I want to make something that pushes that whole industry/genre to strive for better heights. Like Watchmen did I suppose.
>>1993083 If you mean working at a studio as in Rockstar or Ubisoft or whatever then yeah, you get paid a salary. It will increase as you gain experience, take on more of the workload, have a higher position within your group, etc.
I'm not sure when it comes to the ones more like a studio share, where it's essentially a group of artists all doing freelance under the same banner, that would depend on the size of said studio. I imagine Six More Vodka and such could pay salary, but like I say really not sure.
If you want to make more, go it solo, but then you'll have the stress and extra work of sorting out all your own marketing/scheduling/everything. It's more important whether you'd like to work at a safer company job in a group, or go it solo and take risks.
>How old are you? 23 >When and why did you start drawing? Scribbled stuff since early elementary but wanted to draw Spawn type stuff in seventh grade because... hated animu because edgy >What do you do besides art? Work at a office supply store >What is your goal? Make some manga influenced graphic novels, get published... have them turned into movies and be showered in Hollywood's shekels
>19 splains why there is so many assholes on here :^)
>when did you start drawling? well, i geuss i have been drawing most of my life; however,;,;;i started drawing daily since last year.
>what else do you do? calculus homework, I.C.E tables atm. >bio major but closet artist at heart I really like to hang out with friends, good freinds, that's so important to me.
>my goal? get a job I enjoy related to biology (most likley mcdonals cuz im not going to an ivy leauge) and do art in my spare time. I use alot of the stuff i learn in my major and attribute it to my art, it gives it more depth. but thats more of my life goal, art specific is more so to effectively communicate my ideas (creatures, monsters, landscapes, potray emotions) as best I can via technical ability. thats what is so gripping about art, the fact that you it's a visual recording of your imagination and creativity, that's why I never saw the appeal in copying celebbrity portaits and stuff like that, its lacking the indivualism, art is a visual jounral. I like when people like my art and think its cool but I really enjpy when they can relate to it and get FEELS. that's when I know I did something right. I also like to register monsters/creaturess that I come up with, ill do a whole page dedicated to that one particular thing and write about its imagined attributes, habbitat, feeding sources, etc etc i find that stuff really fun.
idk I really like to see the shit people come up with via their imagination, working on creativity carries over into alot of other aspects i find.
anyways enough blabbering. best of luck with all my (apparently) peers and older guys.
Started around a year ago, just got serious since I picked up art classes at my uni. Started drawing so I can produce my own porn and because I want to be able to participate in new fandoms as I get into them and be able to create decent fan art.
>>1991905 >How old are you? 25 >When and why did you start drawing? 2007 I started to doodle. Later my gf dumped me, wanted to become better than her and found out I actually love studying art. 2011/2012 I took it really seriosuly and just devoted to studying >What do you do besides art? I'm a introvert so nothing much. I play guitar to relax myself in-between work stuff. >What is your goal? To be able to word my technical and theoretical knowledge. I'd love to teach when I'm not doing freelance
>How old are you? 18 >When and why did you start drawing? I can't really remember when I exactly started drawing but my art became more digital around 2009-2011? I got a lot compliments through social art medias and so I thought myself "why not keep drawing?" >What do you do besides art? Read books, eat, sleep.. and listen to music? >What is your goal? To be fair I have no clue what's my goal..
>23 >been drawing as long as I can remember but I started taking it seriously in high school. And kept drawing cause it brought the only praise I ever got from my parents. >video games, computer stuff, working out >the goal is to make people feel something with my art
>How old are you? 21 >When and why did you start drawing? Well i started serious before 1 year ,well i wanted to create a comic, or learn about the art of comics so i went to a comic workshop was kinda boring , then i got into illustration traditional and digital ,which is more appealing to me >What do you do besides art? I study civil engineering , play MMOs and watch chinese cartoons , read comics , waste my money on random shit ( my family pays all my shit untill i graduate thatshow the system here in greece ) >What is your goal? my goal is really simple i just want to create/draw/construct things , whether its a house, bridge , a dam or medival art for wizzards or futuristic landscapes , cover pages for superhero comics what so ever
>29 >since I can speak, I just like capturing things I like in a 2D form >im a contractor(painting/construction/power washing/woodworking) for rich snobby people who obsess over anything and everything from Restoration Hardware. I hate my job, but it pays ok.
>to have an office job during the day and become a good enough artist to earn most of my income through art.
>>1991905 -21 -all my life (only been studying seriously since 2013) -uhhh play with my dogs? Play games? O: -be a successful concept artist/illustrator, work for blizzard/Magic, make an art book, just art forever.
I kind of always drew, can't remember of any time when I didn't draw. Not sure when I got serious about it, but I guess I've always had a streak of seriousness in this (although my levels of dedication are really wobbly).
Well, I'm studying in an art school, atm, but, besides that, I recently started horse riding. Cooking is something that I find rather interesting as well, but I haven't had the mind to seriously focus on that. Also vydia.
I don't have a goal, I feel completely fucking lost.
Although, if I ever manage to live off any of my interests, that'd be dandy
When and why did you start drawing? Drew a lot growing up didnt start trying to take it serious until January 2014.
What do you do besides art? Work, watch anime, go to conventions.
What is your goal? Push myself to be a succesful artist. Ideally I want to continue to learn and actually get good even if it takes years and years of study. Atm I'm pretty terrible, I keep trying to take shortcuts and cheats and it's not working out haha. After a 5 month break I'm just jumping back into the art stuffs and going to start from scratch and try to really learn rather than symbol draw the fuck out of everything.
>When and why did you start drawing? When I was a kid, Because I was bullied and had no friends and drawing was something I could do alone, quietly while being overlooked. >What do you do besides art? Nothing >What is your goal? To die someday and leave a trace I was ever here at all.
>20 >Read some Donald Duck when I was around eight and wanted to draw comics professionally. Started to draw seriously when I was either 14, or 18, depending on how you look at it. >Computers, friends, school >Draw comics professionally. Also do something interesting with the medium, not that I know how to, yet.
>32 >Always been drawing but on / off cycle every few years so skills are all over the place >getting serious about it again now >want to make it at least a side job >currently work a soul crushing corporate job but addicted to climbing the ladder >could afford to take 3-5 yeas off of work but can't bring myself to do it
without sounding like a total fag, I'm hoping art is the way to get my heart back in shape.
>>1991905 >16 >shamed by my peers 2 years ago >literally nothing else >leave my mark in the animation and comic industries (Due to medical conditions I may die in my 30s so I'm not wasting any time doing something else)
>>2009017 Couldn't even fucking count it man. I work hard, like crazy hard, and it hasn't necessarily paid off either. I need to add funerals, weddings and friendships to the list of shit I've pass on as well as art over the last decade.
Them feels or whatever, don't really regret it, it's just not a way to live. Go broke chasing what you want or you'll get sucked into this shit.
>mlp / equestria daily crowd was friendly, so I started learning from them in 2010
>lifeguard stupid fucking Children who slip while running on the deck. Its the most boring fucking job; nothing ever happens and advancement isnt a possiblity.
>it used to be making a comic, but now that I find joy in doing furry, Ill just make furry comics and keep listening to SeanWes. >Also find a real job for a college student thats enough for me to live on and buy food with my furry money
>How old are you? 25 >When and why did you start drawing? I enjoyed drawing things I see. Then I enjoyed coming up with my own characters and stories and drawing them.
>What do you do besides art? Well now I work as Technical Artist for a slot game company, before that it was wondering where to go as an artist, and still wondering where to go. >What is your goal? Not sure what my goal is anymore. I graduated from The Kubert School 5 years ago. Schoolmates of mine are fulfilling careers as comic book artists, and if I didn't have this Technical Artist job, I'm not sure where to go. I want to draw comics, but don't want to draw based off other's scripts. I want to draw my own comics with my own characters, but have trouble planning out a story. Do illustration instead, have trouble coming up with original ideas, so instead I do fanart. In the end, I'm just trying to find my style. Sometimes I do the lineart route, sometimes more painterly.
I guess what I really want to do is concept art, but it's finding time to work on my painting. I'm afraid that if I go the painting route, I lose touch with the comic book world. Either way, I feel like my former classmates who I keep in touch with don't respect me as an artist. At this point I guess I'm most fearful about them forgetting me losing my touch with them because they work in the industry now.
At this point basically, I'm not sure where to go, or how to promote myself as an artist.
Pic related. Just a doodle of a character design. Tried to attempt drawing a pose without reference but I'm sure the proportions are off.
>>1993012 >32 >Been drawing on and off, but by the age of 7 I knew it's what I wanted to do. Around middle school I got into comics and wanted to draw comics afterwards. >Before I started persuing art more seriously I used to read, write, cook, hang out with friends, and etc. Now I just draw. >My goal is to teach poor kids that art isn't just a pipe dream as well getting more involved into licensing.
