You know, guys, these pics are made by kids having fun, and we were all at their level at some point in our lives. It's a nice challenge trying to draw these better and in our own styles, but there is no need to mock the young, hopeful aspiring artists we take the images from. That's just being cruel and mean-spirited, and, frankly, you should all know better. A bunch of 16-30 year olds picking on kids in their early teens is pretty pathetic and dumb.

That being said, I myself had a lot of fun trying to redo some of these. I'm glad I got to practice some gesture work.

If I could offer my opnion?

No, not at all. You took the original and swapped it out for something entirely different.

I know a lot of people hate MLP (I don't HATE it, personally, but I don't get why adults enjoy it so much, I tired watching it and I thought it was just a little kid's show), so I understand wanting to swap out the cartoon character above with a realistically drawn horse. But therein lies the problem, now the Winged Unicorn with a shimmering cosmic mane and tail is now just a generic horse, all for a false sense of integrity and conformity.

Applying realistic equine anatomy, moving away from the cartoonish character design, I get that. But you can still make the wings, horn, mane, body color and tail amazing to look at if you find a good way to draw, pose and stylize it all.

Plus, I gotta say that the way you did the background is just so dull and uninspired. The top one has weird perspective and poorly done mountains in the distance, surely, but you took a colorful, vibrant night scene of a creek and made it some gross, groggy and boring bayou.

All in all, the top is more attractive because of it's great color palette and decent lighting. Though yours is just a quick sketch, you sacrificed too much from the original and turned it into your own thing, and the way you delivered your piece makes me blase.

You could do a lot better with your skill, don't be afraid to use the fantastical appendages and cool color palette. And, please, try to detail the background, if you can.

I think OP had good intentions but "draw it better" should be replaced with "draw it from a position of having more years of experience of drawing"

You got it wrong, the only people who would want to draw this "creative" furry shit is furry autists, of any age.
Clearly we have different reasons to like this thread, but the main goal here is to take these drawings that are of terrible taste from idea and execution, and execute them well, creating this clash of bad taste but great execution, creating a conflict in our minds if it's good or still bad. In the end, it's for the lulz of seeing the results.

This is what I was looking for. I thought it was gonna be like "what if this pic had been REALLY done" and that there were gonna be a lot of really nice versions coming out of it. I was expecting there to be some laughs over the fact that you spent time nicely rendering some catboy with pink hair or something, but I didn't think it'd be mostly making fun of the original artists, you can just make a cringe thread for that. I still want to give it a try, though.

Lose the soft/low opacity brushes unless you're going for an airbrush style. Your values are muddy and the texture is inconsistent. It's okay to do your palettes by combining colors with opacity settings.

Try to treat it more like oils where the color you're aiming for is the color on your brush. Also, try to imagine the three dimensional volume of your subject, and paint in strokes that conform to that volume.

Also, you probably need to look up material references so you're accurately portraying the right ones. I'm looking at what I'm guessing should be leather and it's looking more like suede. Smooth kinds of leather have harder, narrower highlights and raw/rough leather has almost no highlights as its texture disperses color.

I'm not seeing any clear indication of where your light's coming from. If you have a hard time depicting ambient light with a direct light source, next time do them one at a time and then combine them afterwards, and observe the end result. We use software to give us these superior shortcuts and new techniques, and it's a common mistake not to think in new ways about what's possible.

Also, reconsider ever using a square canvas again. It's a pain in the ass to make anything look good with. Your bow could be conforming to the golden ratio and it will never look as good as one that does on a canvas with a ratio that exaggerates the different distances between thirds. When you go square, it tends to pay better to go symmetrical and design around the center.

The bad thing about /ic/ is that everyone is anonymous. So there is no accountability, no one is able to gauge how much someone is improving, and no one can take how much experience someone has into account with their posts/advice or offer tailored feedback for that individual. No one feels like they have a place in this community, because everyone is no one. Aside from a few tripfags, or people who can be guessed by their individual style, but still it isn't taken into account for every one of their posts. Things get deleted from here, and you can't see progress or discussions over the span of years. There is no track record other than things that are saved from previous threads. Everything is disjointed in this fashion and people get distracted because random threads get sent to the top that you have to scroll past, and good luck not commenting on some of these. Anonymous works a lot of places, but artwork improvement venues are not one of them imo.

I did it fast and nasty, yeah. Still, can't knock the colors and the composition mostly works for me. You can make money with that kind of work but wouldn't feel right. Normally that'd just be a part of the process. You can take it all the way to photorealism a lot faster than most styles with a lot more detail if you can justify the time.

The second one is actually much better. The pose is more interesting and well done, and the anatomy isn't too fucked up as in the original. About the fabric, if you are looking at the jacket only, the second drawing may be lacking some refinement, some folds, but if you look at the scarf and skirt you see clearly that the second artist has a much better understanding of fabrics and clothing than the original, who does the same beginner level fabric wrinkles everywhere.

Finally, the first illustration is supposed to be a finished version, and is full of scribles everywhere, I guess he was too lazy to ink, and slapped some colors, with a cheesy background bonus. So even a finished polished drawing from this guy isn't better than a sketch made by the second.
