Do a variety of things. Do studies from books (anatomy, perspective etc), masters, life, photos. Do creative work as well and practice drawing form imagination. What proportion of what you do is up to you and your interests and goals.
>>
>>2538406

Make it 8h, fill the rest with preparing your own meals, fitness & exercise, gathering visual aids/being "creative", socializing in local art circles/with friends/family/gf. Also 1h nap if yo will feel tired.

You will do x10 more if you will have healthy life.

Has /ic/ ever had work or ideas stolen from them?

Has /ic/ stolen any ideas before?

I'm not talking "inspiration"

A year ago I had a minor idea stolen from me, and it was really frustrating, and annoying, and now I'm going through the same thing except someone actually thought my work was worth tracing

I had some artists agree that this bitch traced me, but some actually tried implying it was "inspired" by my work. I don't call tracings of other peoples work "inspiration", but I wanted to know how /ic/ felt about what is "inspiration", versus flat out stealing?

Will post my artwork once topic gains traction

Hello /ic/. First time posting here.

I want to improve my drawing skills, but I don't have enough time, so I doodle and try to draw more serious things when I'm free. Usually I draw things from my imagination. I don't want to copy from other pictures, but there's many people who do it and they draw very well as I can see. If I see it convenient, I see references.

The point is that I don't know if I'm doing it right. I mean, when I draw I try to figure out how can I draw that thing, I draw amd keep drawing, then I figure it out and it's like "Oh, so if you do it this way it becomes easier" and so on.

What can I do to improve my drawing skills in a short-medium period of time?

Because if you know the exact problem you wouldn't make that mistake.

Also people can tell that their work generally looks "off" or "shit" but they may not know why. I bet you the person who did the pic you posted is well aware it looks terrible.

do you have a backup plan?

bonus:

what is a good option for someone who has the chance to go to university for 3 years, and also want's to make a living with art? should i go into studying an art related field or build another career and have art on the side until it picks up?

It's okay to take it as a minor I guess. The general rule seems to be that you're probably going to make it if you were meant to. Going to school or not isn't going to be the end all be all of your improvement-most of the kids who 'make it' out of school were probably pretty damn good even before they filed their admission forms.
>>
>>2527272
If you're going into it with a backup plan then you're already preparing to fail. The image you posted is of a shit level artist. You need to bust your ass for years to get to a level of what companies are hiring for. Granted there are levels of paying work but it's pretty easy to see quality artists who get decent work are at.....and that's not even close.

I understand that logically it's good to have a plan b but the very idea of becoming a pro in art is not very logical to begin with. A lot of people who've made it did it because they didn't have another option or they didn't really think about "what if", they just went for it. Having a plan B is fine just be aware that actually "make it" takes an insane amount of dedication and if you're already planning a way out that might not light a fire under your ass.

If you get to a high enough skill level you're going to find work eventually and there are enough people out there who are doing it and making a decent living to prove it's possible.

Also keep in mind the amount of time you spend in school for a "plan b" is time you could have been using to study and take on low level commissions to get your feet wet. 2 - 4 years (especially on the 4 year end) is enough time to go from nothing to getting low level RPG work and starting to make a name for your self. If you do something else in school that takes up a lot of your free time to work on art you might just be forcing yourself into that plan b since you'll need steady work to pay those school loans back when you get out.
>>
>>2527272
Are you... serious? That post is typical reddit tier, absolute trash and if that is your goal, you can achieve it in a few months. It won't get you any income though, so you'll need to aim much higher.

I personally don't have a backup plan because I'd rather kill myself than have a shitty job I hate doing and spending 3 years of my life studying useless shit I don't care about instead of getting good.

I need a bit of advice, /ic/. I wanted to join a VN/game project for fun, however the project leader wants to go commercial. I don't care about being paid and would honestly do it for free (I just want to make something of my own), but I thought I'd be fine if we went the paid route as well. It just means getting money to do something I was gonna do anyway, right?

However, our leader has started looking for sprite artists to complement our project (and work along with me, it's only been me and him until this point and he's the writer). And looking at the applications that have been sent in, it's clear to me that I'm vastly outmatched.

Pic related is a concept painting I made a few days ago for the project. I'm still learning, and hoping to get better at painting eventually, but I realistically don't think I'll get much better than that in the timeframe this project is going to exist. The offers that have been sent in by other artists are much better than this.

What should I do? I feel like there is no way in hell I'm going to be able to keep up with somebody who is significantly more skilled than me, but asking somebody (including my team lead) to downgrade their expectations or the quality of their work so that I have a chance to match them seems outright insulting for everyone involved.

Pic related is a quick demo of one of our characters an applicant has sent. She also offers good rates and seems to understand the project's atmosphere well.

The only real reason why she would not be picked is if someone even better somehow came along, so I know I can't expect things "not to work out" or for this level of quality to be out of the project's league.
>>
>>2538106

Your painting doesn't say much about your drawing ability, which might be more impotant, so it's hard to say.

Regarding you being outmatched or not depends mostly on your leaders budget. Even a small game would need a lot of art, and a somewhat professional artist doing this fulltime would at least demand 20+ USD/hr.

If your leader made an request, without informing about pay, and then he really just got 1000 buck budget, you might get many applicants that would turn you down once they hear the rates.

But still, a game, small or big, needs many kinds of designs at many levels of difficulty.

A big developer would use their top guys for the main chars and such, and then juniors or even freelancers get everything in between, from designing UI to mundane objects in the game etc. Regardless of your potential partners level, you could still do some "lesser important" parts.
>>
That's not bad for a concept piece. The thumbnail looks really nice and I highly doubt those applicants are going to work without pay. A lot of people apply to every job they can without really reading the description, so make sure first they're not expecting tons of money.

Secondly, 2 people are making a 3D game? That is just not going to work, mate. Nowadays everyone thinks making games is so easy, but the truth is that the vast majority of projects fail quite early. I've been part of a few unpaid projects at the beginning of my career and they all seemed promising in the beginning, but very soon they died due to incompetence, laziness and lack of people.
If you just want to make a portfolio, you don't need to work on real projects. Do personal art and make sure it's good. Maybe do some series of things that look like it's been part of a project. Then apply to real, paid jobs.

Learn to photobash as well.

I think it's fantastic, and I love how much it bothers some people.
A good chunk of it takes either legitimate technical skill or enough knowledge to stir up shit with art nerds.
It's a pure form of art IMO.

Art and human expression are more valuable than tax payers dollars.

To think otherwise you have to be a weaboo how draws badly done manga and can't into art.
